Episode 9: Spit and Eggs
This one starts in medias res, with Piz and Mac at a big party wondering where Veronica is. Veronica’s currently running through the empty halls of the dorm, frantically hammering at Piz’s door. But Piz isn’t there, so Veronica collapses on the floor and we see blood on her face. Some dude walks up beside her, but we don’t see who it is. Justice League of America #230 – “Blessed is the Peacemaker” – Gerry Conway/Alan Kupperberg
Last issue, a Martian invasion fleet showed up to attack Earth. J’onn J’onzz (aka Martian Manhunter) preceded the fleet by mere hours, warning the humans about the imminent invasion, but not everyone was convinced of J’onn’s loyalty. J’onn opposes the Martian leader (known as the Marshal) who wants J’onn dead because many Martians look on him as a hero. J’onn decided to go after the Martian flagship on his own and stole a JLA spaceship, leaving a breach in the bulkhead of the Satellite. Superman #399 – “The Man Who Saw Superman Die” – Paul Kupperberg/Eduardo Barreto/Dave Hunt
This one starts with a familiar figure leaving STAR Labs, where he’s been working as a consultant. It’s Ed Hamilton (aka Colonel Future from issue 378) and we see his powers of prediction are still working. A car almost runs him down and since it takes a near-death experience to activate Hamilton’s precognitive powers, he sees a vision of the future … Superman being gunned down. Batman #375 – “The Glacier Under Gotham” – Doug Moench/Don Newton/Alfredo Alcala
This one starts with some poetry and a number of drawings of Gotham encased in ice. Yeah, Mr. Freeze is the villain (how did you guess?), but the drawings come from one of his henchmen, a guy named Sammy who’s quite adept at fantasy depictions but couldn’t make it as a commercial artist. The other members of Freeze’s gang (especially one named Lou) don’t really share his vision of freezing Gotham, saying it’ll bring the Army down on them. Flash #336 – “Murder on the Rocks” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Frank McLaughlin
Last issue, two crooks were hired anonymously (through a tape recording) to blow up the mountain house of Cecile Horton, Flash’s lawyer. A tabloid reporter and his assistant were planting bugs in the house at the time of the explosion, but the reporter survives. Flash is still talking to the mayor (whose life he saved last issue) and learns that the mayor’s recent bad-mouthing of Flash wasn’t his idea. Flash finds the micro-transmitter in the mayor’s ear and figures out who is probably behind it. Episode 7: Of Vice and Men
This one starts with Veronica collecting some clothes and stuff from home and trying to sneak out. No, she’s not shacking up with Logan, she’s just being all judgmental about her dad banging Harmony (who’s married) and doesn’t want to live with him right now. (Veronica is mad at Logan too, since he swears Mercer has an alibi for the third rape, but refuses to tell her where they were or what they were doing.) Justice League of America #229 – “Bitter Ashes” – Gerry Conway/Alan Kupperberg/Pablo Marcos
This one starts with a space shuttle in orbit around Earth getting blasted by a Martian warship. Firestorm and J’onn (Martian Manhunter) J’onzz fly up to help, but Firestorm is pretty suspicious of J’onn. Even though J’onn came to Earth last issue to warn of his fellow Martians’ plan to invade, Firestorm wonders if J’onn might secretly be in league with the other Martians. (He’s not … the Martians consider him a traitor to their race.) Superman #398 – “The Kid Who Master-Minded Superman” – Joey Cavalieri/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt
This one starts with a suburban kid (Mickey Norris) finishing his paper route in Masonville and playing his favourite game … Superman. Yes, this is the same kid from Superman 388 with the weird mental powers. Mickey pretends to be the Man of Steel saving a jet falling from the sky. Episode 6: Hi, Infidelity
This one starts in Dean O’Dell’s office, where he’s giving Claire shit for faking being raped. Apparently, Veronica took the evidence to the alternative newspaper, since Nish refused to print it in the regular paper. O’Dell expels Claire and tells Nish she’s done as editor of the paper.
