Conan 159 coverConan the Barbarian #159 – “Cauldron of the Doomed” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema

This one starts with Conan in a gladiator pit wrestling a brute named Tonzhog. Apparently, Conan found himself without a horse and any money to buy a new one, so he figured he’d win a bit of coin fighting. The spectators aren’t expecting him to win, but of course he does. They pay him and as he’s leaving one of the spectators, a beautiful woman named Marielle, pretends to twist her ankle just as he walks by. GIJoe 128 coverG.I. Joe #128 (September 1992) – “Winds of Change” – Larry Hama/Andrew Wildman/Stephen Baskerville

This one continues from a couple of issues ago, when Firefly (supported by a squadron of BATs) gassed all the Joe ninjas (as well as Slice and Dice) so he could subject them to the brainwave device and turn them into his own mindless ninja army. He’s finished brainwashing everyone except Snake Eyes, whose mind proves resistant to the technique. Continue reading “G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 128, G.I. Joe 129”

This one continues from a couple issues ago, with a stand-off between the Joe Ninja Force and the red ninjas (led by Slice and Dice) in the forest of Trans-Carpathia being interrupted by the red ninja leader suddenly revealing himself as someone important. How do we know he’s important? Because they kept his identity secret for two issues to drive us nuts. Continue reading “G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 126, G.I. Joe 127”

G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 124, G.I. Joe 125

GIJoe 124 coverG.I. Joe #124 (May 1992) – “Triptych” – Larry Hama/Andrew Wildman/Randy Emberlin

As suggested by the title, this issue tells three stories simultaneously: the drug problem in Broca Beach, the toxic waste stuff in the Gulf of Mexico, and the big ninja fight in Trans-Carpathia. The stories are actually told in parallel, with each getting one panel per page (interrupted by the occasional set of splash pages). Instead of trying to do all three at once, I’ll take each story in turn, starting with the drug stuff in Broca Beach. Continue reading “G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 124, G.I. Joe 125”

The Librarians Reviews: Season 1, Episode 4

Librarians opening title 1-4The Librarians and Santa’s Midnight Run – Director: Jonathan Frakes/Writers: Paul Guyot, John Rogers

This one starts at a soup kitchen in England just before Christmas. A guy comes in to rob the place, but the guy ladling out the soup (played by Bruce Campbell) talks him down, appealing to his better nature almost as if he can read the guy’s mind. (Considering the episode title, I think we can guess who he is.) Unfortunately, Santa gets hit by a mistletoe dart fired by a mysterious woman and passes out. Continue reading “The Librarians Reviews: Season 1, Episode 4”

Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 153, Conan the Barbarian 154

Conan 153 coverConan the Barbarian #153 – “The Bird Men of Akah Ma’at” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Ernie Chan

This one starts with Conan crossing a rickety wooden plank bridge … a bit too rickety, as it breaks beneath him. Conan makes it to safety, but his horse doesn’t, so he heads to the nearest town (Syterna) to “acquire” a new one. He sees an attractive woman (Alhambra) being accosted by some soldiers. It seems she’s been chosen as the local baron’s latest conquest, but she has no interest in the dubious honour. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 153, Conan the Barbarian 154”
