The Librarians and Some Dude Named Jeff – Director: Lindy Booth/Writer: Marco Schnabel
This one starts with Eve and the Librarians heading to the La Brea tar pits to recover the Osiris Stone, which is bringing prehistoric animals back to life. Jenkins sends them through the magic portal … except it isn’t Jenkins, it’s the titular dude named Jeff but none of the others notice the difference.
Naturally, Jenkins wakes up in Jeff’s body. (As always in these sorts of
body-swap episodes, we see him as Jenkins, but everyone around him—including himself when looking in a mirror—sees him as Jeff). He meets Jeff’s mom (and her large collection of cats) and tries to leave. Jeff’s friends (Aurora, Schmidt, and Dennis) stop by to pick him up for work (which is some kind of tech support). Jenkins gets them to drop him at the Annex, but of course he can’t get in
since he’s in the wrong body. He tries to write a sign saying what happened, but Jeff makes sure the others don’t see it. Jenkins has no choice but to head back to Jeff’s house (and life). Jeff’s friends are waiting there to play Dungeons & Dragons and Jenkins gets a shock when he finds out all the characters are named after him and his fellow Librarians.
Apparently, Jeff has been collecting bits of information on the Library (and Jenkins especially) for years, to the point of obsession. Back at the Library,
Cassandra soon notices that Jenkins is acting weird (him hitting on her probably clinched it) and she also finds the book Jeff used to make the body switch. Jeff has no clue what to do with it, so he just tosses it under a table even though it’s already oozing ectoplasm. At Jeff’s house, Jenkins gets pissed off at the inaccuracies in the D&D game (paralysis spells are much quicker to cast than fireballs!) and finds out that Jeff has been acting strange since he book a rare book online. The book turns out to be the Asmodeus Grimoire, which Jenkins says is the
most dangerous book in the world. Jenkins tells Aurora, Schmidt, and Dennis the truth about the body-switch (which they accept without question) because he needs them to help him break into the library through one of its secret entrances. We get a cool training montage as Jenkins prepares them for the trials they’ll face (although he doesn’t know specifics because the Library’s traps keep changing all the time). Jenkins ends up bonding with the trio since they all know what it’s like to feel like an outsider, and that’s how Jenkins has always felt too.
They get inside the Library’s Back Door and face a puzzle test, which Schmidt solves rather easily, since it turns out to be a 20-sided die. In the
Library, the others confront Jeff, who tells them the truth and leads them to the Asmodeus Grimoire. Unfortunately, something has already escaped from the book and is loose in the Library and they run straight into it. Under the Library, the next puzzle is based on DDR, which Aurora figures out quickly (leading a reluctant Jenkins through the dance steps). The last chamber tests their perseverance and
Jenkins almost succumbs to despair until Dennis gives him a pep talk that helps them find their way out. Jenkins makes his new friends honorary knights and tells them to head back to Jeff’s house and wait. In the Library, he soon comes upon the escaped creature’s handiwork, finding Eve and the three Librarians wrapped in some kind of cocoons.
Jenkins soon finds Jeff and demands his body back. Jeff is reluctant because he hates his life, but Jenkins points out that he has a lot of positive things in his life, including some very faithful friends and a loving mother. They do the reversal spell, but it doesn’t take effect immediately and they can’t waste any time. Asmodeus is looking for the gem Merlin used to banish him;
Jenkins hid the gem in the Grimoire, but Jeff took it out and gave it to his mom, so that’s where Asmodeus will be headed. After arming themselves, Jenkins and Jeff head to his house and find Asmodeus threatening Jeff’s mom. They fight him (well, Jenkins fights him while Jeff hides), but the demon gets the upper hand. Jeff distracts him with a Ring Pop, giving Jenkins the chance to finish him off for good. Jeff figures his bravery came from Jenkins, but it turns out they got back to their real bodies as soon as they came through the portal. Later, Jenkins joins Jeff and his friends for a D&D game and is made DM (over Schmidt’s objections) because of his knowledge on arcane matters.
This is a really good episode. I love the D&D references and it’s cool to see
Jeff’s friends step up and go on a real adventure to help him. Jenkins connection to them makes sense since he knows how it feels to be an outsider. Despite being Sir Galahad (the Perfect Knight), he always felt out of place at Camelot since he was Lancelot’s illegitimate son and he still feels that way at the Library, since he’s neither a Librarian nor a Guardian. I also liked how Jeff’s friends immediately believed Jenkins when he told them about the body-swap, instead of arguing about it for half the episode. Jeff learns a valuable lesson (besides
“don’t buy evil magic books online”) when he finds out that his life doesn’t suck as much as he thought it did. It’s interesting that Jeff managed to amass so much info about the Librarians (although technically he doesn’t have that much) and we get references to some DOSA files that were posted on WikiLeaks, as well as the articles that Sarina was writing (which she then repudiated after meeting Jacob and the others).
