Superman 374 coverSuperman #374 – “Love is Deadlier … the Second Time Around” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Dan Adkins

Last issue, Superman’s old friend Vartox came to Earth for a visit, and to reconnect with Lana Lang. Vartox’s planet is too toxic for Lana to live there, but she acquired a protective aura from an incorporeal benefactor. Instead of being suspicious of this sudden good fortune, Lana and Vartox were thrilled and started making plans for her to go back to his planet together. Batman 350 coverBatman #350 – “Nightmare in Crimson” – Gerry Conway, Paul Levitz/Gene Colan/Tony DeZuniga

Last issue, Dick (Robin) Grayson found out his ex-girlfriend (Dala) is a vampire. Unfortunately, he found out the hard way, after being kidnapped by Dala and bitten on the neck. He escaped and almost got run down by a priest on the highway. The priest took him to a hospital, where he’s now recovering. Robin has a fevered dream about Dala turning into a gothic monster and trying to kill him, and he wakes up to find Father Green watching him with worry. Flash 311 coverFlash #311 – “Captives of the Boom-Boom-Boomerang” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Frank Giacoia

Last issue, Colonel Computron (yeah, I know) reappeared, still looking for revenge against W.W. Wiggins. Computron’s identity is a mystery, but it could be either Basil Nurblin (who developed the Computron toy for Wiggins and got nothing in return) or his wife Francine. It could even be their daughter, Lena, since she’s studying science in college. Anyway, Computron tried to kill Wiggins and Captain Boomerang (who feels he owes Wiggins for giving him his first job) saved him, but Flash told Wiggins not to trust Boomerang. It seems Flash may have been right, because Computron offered Boomerang a deal: if Boomerang lets Computron kill Wiggins, Computron will also get rid of the Flash. JLA 204 coverJustice League of America #204 – “The Cut of the Cards” – Gerry Conway/Don Heck/Romeo Tanghal

Last issue, a new Royal Flush Gang started taking out various Justice Leaguers to establish some quick cred. Firestorm and Aquaman wound up comatose in a Los Angeles hospital and Wonder Woman was knocked out just outside. But the new Jack found out the leader of the Royal Flush (Ace) is actually a robot, reporting to an unseen master called Wild Card. (No, I don’t think it’s George R.R. Martin.) Superman 373 coverSuperman #373 – “Lana Lang’s Farewell to Earth” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt

This one starts with Superman doing a favour for some oil drillers by removing a big rock that’s been impeding their drill. As soon as Superman gets the rock in the air, it starts growing at an alarming rate. He figures the “rock” is some ancient weapon, buried on Earth long ago and meant to expand so much as to destroy the entire planet and that he must’ve triggered it when he moved it. Comics Reviews: Batman 349, Detective 516, Brave & the Bold 188, Firestorm 2

Batman 349 coverBatman #349 – “Blood Sport” – Gerry Conway/Gene Colan/Alfredo Alcala

This one starts with Batman swinging around Hollywood, and I mean literally swinging, on his Batline. He’s in La-La Land to check out the Crime Academy, a school for crooks which he’s managed to infiltrate as Matches Malone. After killing some time, he calls home but there’s no answer. Batman finds that strange, since either Dick or Alfred should be there. But as we saw last issue, Dick (aka Robin) trailed his former girlfriend (Dala) to a spooky old country house where he got bashed on the head. Flash 310 coverFlash #310 – “Colonel Computron Strikes Back—With a Vengeance” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Dennis Jensen

This one starts with Barry Allen and Detective Frank Curtis attending a birthday party for toy magnate W.W. Wiggins’s ten-year-old son. Barry and Frank aren’t there voluntarily; Captain Frye forced them to attend because Wiggins contributes heavily to the police department pension fund, so Frye wants to keep Wiggins happy by having a few cops at the party. JLA 203 coverJustice League of America #203 – “Shuffle and Deal … With Death” – Gerry Conway/Don Heck/Romeo Tanghal

This issue is a bit different because a lot of the story is told from the villains’ points of view. But it starts with a couple of good guys (Aquaman and Firestorm) hanging out in the southern Pacific Ocean (with Aquaman surfing on a couple of dolphins). Aquaman has brought Firestorm there for some training, but he’s also hoping to give the young hothead an attitude adjustment; Firestorm has been acting a bit too cocky lately, jumping into situations before being properly prepared, so Aquaman has decided to give him a lesson in humility. Comics Reviews: Superman 372, Action 532, DC Comics Presents 46, Warlord 58

Superman 372 coverSuperman #372 – “Superman’s History-Changing Mission” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Frank Chiaramonte

This one starts with a couple of WGBS traffic reporters in their helicopter over Metropolis. The reporters almost have heart attacks when a black meteorite streaks by, but Superman is soon on the scene to take care of things. The meteorite turns out to be made of anti-matter, which means if it touches any positive matter (of which Metropolis and Superman are made) it’ll cause an explosion that annihilates both forms of matter. Comics Reviews: Batman 348, Detective 515, Brave & the Bold 187, Firestorm 1

Batman 348 coverBatman #348 – “Shadow Play” – Gerry Conway/Gene Colan/Klaus Janson

This one starts with Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, and Alfred moving a bunch of stuff back into the original Batcave under Wayne Manor. That’s right, Bruce has finally decided to move back to the Manor, both as Bruce and as Batman. After almost getting squished when the giant penny rolls off its moorings, the trio are summoned by the doorbell upstairs.
