Conan 159 coverConan the Barbarian #159 – “Cauldron of the Doomed” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema

This one starts with Conan in a gladiator pit wrestling a brute named Tonzhog. Apparently, Conan found himself without a horse and any money to buy a new one, so he figured he’d win a bit of coin fighting. The spectators aren’t expecting him to win, but of course he does. They pay him and as he’s leaving one of the spectators, a beautiful woman named Marielle, pretends to twist her ankle just as he walks by. Conan 157 coverConan the Barbarian #157 – “The Wizard” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Ernie Chan

This one starts with Conan arriving in the Brythunian city-state of Berthalia just in time to see a funeral procession wending through the streets. He learns the dead man was killed trying to rescue the queen from a wizard on a mountain … and that there’s a substantial reward for whoever does rescue her. Undaunted by the fact that over a dozen men have died trying, Conan goes to the palace to let the king know he’s willing to rescue the queen. This one starts with Conan crossing a rickety wooden plank bridge … a bit too rickety, as it breaks beneath him. Conan makes it to safety, but his horse doesn’t, so he heads to the nearest town (Syterna) to “acquire” a new one. He sees an attractive woman (Alhambra) being accosted by some soldiers. It seems she’s been chosen as the local baron’s latest conquest, but she has no interest in the dubious honour. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 153, Conan the Barbarian 154”

Conan 151 coverConan the Barbarian #151 – “Vale of Death” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Ernie Chan

This one starts with Conan hunting in the mountains of Cimmeria. He’s attacked by a giant hawk and dropped into a hidden valley. He comes upon a burning castle where some hill tribes (the Yggdar) have slaughtered all the inhabitants (the Osiiren) … or almost all. A dying man gives Conan a locket and begs him to deliver it and pass on a message, but he expires before he can go into detail.
