Conan 179 coverConan the Barbarian #179 – “The End of All There Is” – Jim Owsley/John Buscema/Bob Camp

This one starts with Conan and Keiv washed ashore on the meadow coast of Shem, near the town of Becharadur. A thief called Jamal stumbles across them but doesn’t even attempt to rouse them since he has bigger things on his mind … like robbing the king’s Treasure Tower. Conan 177 coverConan the Barbarian #177 – “Well of Souls” – Jim Owsley/John Buscema/Pablo Marcos

This one starts with Conan, Tetra, and Delmurio sailing through rough seas ten days out of Messantia. They’re looking for the island shown on their treasure map, but the captain is worried they might be sailing to their deaths. While he and the crew confront Conan, Delmurio and Tetra argue about her feelings for Conan. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 177, Conan the Barbarian 178”

Conan 175 coverConan the Barbarian #175 – “The Scarlet Personage” – Jim Owsley/John Buscema/Ernie Chan

This one continues from last issue, with Conan, Tetra, and Delmurio still on their quest for treasure. But the civil war in Zingara has made people desperate and they’re accosted by some fishermen who have turned to banditry now that trade has dried up. Conan and company (including Tetra, who starts out disguised as an old hag) make short work of the bandits and continue on to Cascan, a town built into the banks of the Thunder River. Conan 173 coverConan the Barbarian #173 – “Honor Among Thieves” – Jim Owsley/John Buscema/Bob Camp

This one continues from last issue with a troop of 100 Zingaran soldiers searching the Pictish Wilderness for someone … probably the same someone that Zacharus came looking for. The Zingarans run into Tetra in her new warrior’s guise. She seems to have learned fighting skills very quickly, as she takes down two scouts rather easily. Conan 171 coverConan the Barbarian #171 – “Barbarian Death Song” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Armando Gil

This one starts with Conan leading a Nemedian army against the invading Aquilonians and pushing them back. His tactics have won the day after six months of back-and-forth struggle, so the Nemedians are eager to make him permanent commander of their army. But Conan is too restless to stay in one place too long and declines the offer. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 171, Conan the Barbarian 172”

Conan 169 coverConan the Barbarian #169 – “Tomb of the Scarlet Mage” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Bob Camp

This one starts with Conan being chased through a snowstorm by some scumbags who want to kill him. (A fairly common occurrence, but this time it’s because he discovered their brother trying to snatch his coin purse and strangled the would-be thief.) Conan’s horse goes down in the snow and his sword is broken, so he takes off. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 169, Conan the Barbarian 170”

Conan 167 coverConan the Barbarian #167 – “The Creature From Time’s Dawn” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Dave Simons

This one starts with Conan and Fafnir betting on a street game in some town. Fafnir is still pissed off that Conan kept him from being killed last issue, but they’re distracted when Conan realizes the guy running the game is cheating. The head con (Menskar) takes off while Conan pounds his thugs, which attracts the attention of a lovely noblewoman (Countess Noirelle), who invites Conan and Fafnir back to her chateau. Conan 165 coverConan the Barbarian #165 – “Temple of the Dragon” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Armando Gil

This one starts with Conan and Fafnir sneaking into a temple to loot some precious objects. Apparently the temple priests worship some sort of dragon-god and have been extorting and terrorizing the local populace, making them fair game for looters … at least as far as Conan is concerned. (Conan grabbed a mirror that’s missing a jewel in the handle and when the priests find the temple looted, they’re very relieved that the gem—a big diamond—is still safe in its hiding place under a golden dragon idol.) Conan 163 coverConan the Barbarian #163 – “Cavern of the Vines of Doom” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema/Charles Vess

This one starts with Conan and his Vanirman friend Fafnir riding into a village in the Border Kingdoms. They see a young woman about to be burnt at the stake and Fafnir jumps in to save her. He and Conan ride away with the girl (Krylxxa), who assures them the villagers’ accusations about her being a witch aren’t true. But when they stop at a stream, Conan notices the water level decline when Krylxxa crosses the water. Continue reading “Conan Reviews: Conan the Barbarian 163, Conan the Barbarian 164”

Conan 161 coverConan the Barbarian #161 – “House of Skulls” – Michael Fleisher/John Buscema

This one starts with Conan wandering the alleys of Belglat in the Border Kingdoms. He’s jumped by some street punks who think him an easy mark, but before he can waste them all, he’s felled by a lucky kick. The punks are ready to kill him when a cloaked figure shows up and wastes three of them, allowing the others to run away.
