Justice League America #35 – “Lifeboat” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Adam Hughes/Art Nichols, Jose Marzon, Joe Rubinstein
Last issue, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle set up a casino on Kooeykooeykooey, a Pacific island whose natives thought the League’s presence might keep away the world powers. But the island turned out to have a mind of its own and decided to uproot and drift away, causing havoc with the tourists and residents alike. This one starts with Major Disaster lamenting his lack of success as a super-villain. He’s been reduced to living in a shithole apartment with Big Sir, but when he realizes Big Sir can count cards like Rainman, he decides to cash in on that talent. In New York, Maxwell Lord isn’t happy when he finds out Blue Beetle and Booster Gold have opened a casino on Kooeykooeykooey (the Pacific island recently annexed by the League) and used the JLI name to advertise it. Justice League America #33 – “Nitwits, Knuckleheads, and Poozers” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Adam Hughes/Art Nichols
This one starts with a bored Guy Gardner deciding to drop by the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps to stir up some shit. After freaking out a passenger on a commercial jet, Guy heads to GLC HQ, where he finds Kilowog feeling sorry for himself because the Corps (and the Guardians of the Universe) have all kinda dissolved. Justice League America #32 – “Breaking Point” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Adam Hughes/Art Nichols
This continues the JLA/JLE crossover from last month, when the two teams were called to a village in Eastern Europe because most of the population had turned into vampires … or something resembling vampires, at least. After some indecisive skirmishes, daylight drove the “vampires” into hiding and the teams took up a defensive posture around the village. This one starts with the Spectre arriving at a devastated village in Eastern Europe. He was drawn there by mystic forces, but he can’t figure out why since there are no human souls left in the village … not even the souls of the dead. The Gray Man shows up and we’re reminded of his mission: collecting dream essence from the recently dead on behalf of the Lords of Order. Last issue, Big Barda’s car was stolen with her Mega-Rod in the trunk. Barda, Mr. Miracle, and Fire tracked the car to New Jersey where they found the thieves dead and the Mega-Rod missing. This one starts with Fire flying around New York, enjoying the feeling of freedom and exhilaration that comes with her new power-shift. Yes, as I’m sure all of you guessed, Fire can now turn her whole body into living flame like the Human Torch (who she’s almost mistaken for) thanks to the after-effects of the alien Gene Bomb. But she doesn’t know the limits of her new powers yet, so she heads back to the Embassy where Big Barda is waiting to train her and test those limits. They’re being very secretive about it, but I’m guessing her powers spontaneously upgraded so she can burst into flames like the Human Torch. This one starts with Oberon going to Belle Rêve to tell Amanda Waller about Blue Beetle going nuts last issue and trying to kill Max Lord. Waller and Oberon end up getting along (since their abrasive personalities match) and he asks her help in figuring out what’s wrong with Blue Beetle and fixing it. Back at JLA headquarters, Beetle has been confined to Max’s room to keep him from harming anyone (or himself).
