Legion of Super-Heroes 47 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #47 – “Conspiracy Theory” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque, Pat Broderick/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with some Legionnaires (Lightning Lass, Tellus, Timber Wolf, Quislet, and Magnetic Kid) at a broadcasting tower in the Atlantic. The tower caught fire for some reason, so the Legionnaires do damage control and rescue people inside. Tellus gets distracted and afterwards tells Magnetic Kid that there’s some kind of conspiracy in the Legion and that Saturn Girl is part of it … a fact he gleaned telepathically right from Saturn Girl’s mind. Legion of Super-Heroes 46 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #46 – “On the Fourth Hand” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque, Pat Broderick/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with four Legionnaires discussing some kind of plan they have, something they’re keeping secret from their teammates. Brainiac 5 is one of them, but the others are in the shadows. (Going by their hands on the splash page, I’d say Mon-El is definitely one of them, plus a couple of unidentifiable women.) Legion of Super-Heroes 45 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #45 – “Unlucky Streak” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This is an extra-long anniversary issue, with guest art from Kurt Schaffenberger, Curt Swan, Dave Cockrum, Mike Grell, Keith Giffen, and Dick Giordano. It has a very nostalgic tone, focusing mostly on Lightning Lad (and Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy) and a lot of it is just retellings of classic Legion stories. We got a glimpse of the overall premise last issue, with the three Luck Lords plotting something to do with Garth (Lightning Lad) Ranzz and this story starts with them still scheming. Legion of Super-Heroes 44 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #44 – “Quislet’s Story” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with Brainiac 5 examining the miniature “black hole” in Quislet’s quarters and concluding it isn’t necessarily linked to his (and Wildfire’s) disappearance. Brainy and Polar Boy leave to attend to other matters, while Tellus and Invisible Kid remain to wonder where their teammates vanished to. Legion of Super-Heroes 43 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #43 – “And Wake to Find a Dream” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

Last issue, the Legionnaires found out their Academy trainee Laurel Kent wasn’t really a descendant of Superman, and in fact wasn’t even human; she turned out to be a Manhunter robot, activated after a thousand years to kill the descendants of the humans chosen by the Guardians of the Universe to become immortal (in the Millennium mini-series). Legion of Super-Heroes 42 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #42 – “To Sleep a Thousand Years” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This one starts with Polar Boy congratulating himself on his leadership during the big fight against Starfinger and his gangs. Tellus gets tired of Polar Boy’s ego, so he goes to find someone else to hang with. He runs into Sun Boy and Laurel Kent, but they’re getting romantic, so he leaves. Justice League Annual 1 coverJustice League Annual #1 – “Germ Warfare” – /Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Bill Willingham/Dennis Janke, P. Craig Russell, Bill Wray, R. Campanella, Bruce Patterson, Dick Giordano

This story takes place right after Justice League #4, which is why Guy Gardner is still an asshole and Dr. Fate is still on the team. It starts with a handful of Kord Industries employees flying to a remote island in the South Pacific. Ted Kord (aka Blue Beetle) bought the island sight-unseen, but there’s some kind of old compound there, so he sent some guys to check it out. The place looks deserted until a woman with red glowing eyes pops up out of nowhere. It isn’t long before everyone’s eyes are red and the Kord employees head back to civilization to carry the woman’s “message” to the rest of humanity. Comics Reviews: Justice League International 8, New Teen Titans 38, Infinity Inc. 45

Justice League International 8 coverJustice League International #8 – “Moving Day” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Al Gordon

This is basically a downtime issue, showing the League as they try to get used to being under the aegis of the United Nations and move into various embassies around the world. This issue is a classic fan-favourite, and really cements the tone of the so-called “Bwa-ha-ha League”. In New York, J’onn J’onzz is supervising the movers (whose load includes a huge crate of Oreos) and finds out the embassy’s infrastructure isn’t all that great when he crashes through the floor into the room below. Legion of Super-Heroes 40 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #40 – “What Starfinger Touches” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque, Dan Jurgens/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This one starts with a quartet of Legionnaires (Dream Girl, Element Lad, Timber Wolf, and Star Boy) hanging around in orbit outside Earth’s polymer screen (wearing protective space-suits, of course). Apparently, Dream Girl had a vision that someone would attack Earth in this spot, and that Star Boy would be integral to stopping them. Legion of Super-Heroes 39 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #39 – “The One That Got Away” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque, Curt Swan/Mike DeCarlo, Romeo Tanghal

This one starts with Gigi Cusimano (of the Science Police) contemplating something that’ll change her life. We’re not told exactly what it is, but she’s thinking about settling down, she’s holding what looks like a ring box, and she gets a call from Sun Boy urging her to accept his “once in a lifetime” offer … sounds like a marriage proposal, doesn’t it?
