Justice League 4 coverJustice League #4 – “Winning Hand” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Al Gordon

This one starts with the Justice league discussing how Maxwell Lord breached their security and why he’s trying to foist new members (Dr. Light and Booster Gold) on them. Dr. Light isn’t happy that Lord lied to her about his connection with the league and she walks out. Lord keeps pushing the team to accept Booster, whose pride is hurt when the League aren’t all that keen.Booster leaves and notices a crowd gathered outside, including a bunch ofBooster takes on Royal Flush Gang reporters. Booster’s deal is that he came back from the 25th Century to be a superhero (and media darling), so he can’t resist talking to the press. Booster’s impromptu press conference distracts everyone enough to let a group of villains sneak up and sabotage the power feed, shorting out the electric fence that keeps crowds away from JLA headquarters. Booster looks around and finds out it’s the Royal Flush Gang who are trying to breach the JLA’s defenses. Inside, Batman orders Mr. Miracle to turn on a force-field Booster gets a surprisebubble around headquarters, trapping Booster along with the Royal Flush Gang. Batman wants to see how Booster performs against them and despite the odds, he actually does pretty well. He takes down King, Queen, Jack, and Ten (decking her after assuring her it’s okay because he comes from the future where sexual equality is a given). The League comes out to congratulate him, but they all get a shock when the last member of the Gang shows up … Ace. Except this version is a twenty foot tall robot that’s been programmed to counter all the Leaguers’ powers. They all attack Ace, who does pretty well against them, until Booster gets involved. Since he’s not a JLA member yet, Ace wasn’tAce blown to bits programmed to face him, which gives Booster an advantage. After telling Blue Beetle to turn off the force field, Booster picks Ace up and flies him into the air, dropping him just as Beetle turns the force field back on. That blows the robot to pieces and the JLA are impressed enough with Booster’s performance to invite him to join officially. Batman and J’onn J’onzz are less enthusiastic about Maxwell Lord, especially when Lord tells the press he’s the team’s new press liaison. Batman says they’ll have to deal with Lord … and quickly.

Infinity Inc. 41 coverInfinity Inc. #41 – “Bride of Lightning—Groom of Thunder” – Roy and Dann Thomas/Vince Argondezzi/Tony DeZuniga

Last issue, Skyman was happy to see Jonni Thunder again, but that quickly went sour as her evil Thunderbolt showed up and knocked them both out. Turns out she’s some kind of alien and wants to use Skyman to recreate the essence of her mate, just as she used Jonni Thunder to give herself the Thunderbolt form. She uses a statuette to transfer power into Skyman and it works, bringing another Thunderbolt to life. The two T-bolts are thrilled to be reunited and soon get down to some electrical sex. At Stellar Studios, Yolanda (Wildcat) Montez apologizes to Albert (Nuklon)Sanchez explains things Rothstein about being jealous of him and Fury (although Al’s so thick, he still doesn’t realize Yolanda is hot for him). She tells Al about Fury being pregnant, but they’re interrupted by an alarm indicating that a fellow Infinitor might be in deadly danger. They head to police headquarters, meeting Jade, Obsidian, and Brainwave Jr. on the way. Lieutenant Sanchez shows them Skyman and Jonni Thunder, who are both comatose. Sanchez (who’s Jonni’s almost-boyfriend from her mini-series) shows them the two statuettes and suggests Jonni’s T-bolt might have a friend now. Sanchez tells them Jonni sent him a weird letter from Peru talking about electrical aliens and she included a tracing of fighting the thunderboltssome weird hieroglyphics. The Infinitors take the tracing and their unconscious friends back to headquarters to check things out. Their computer deciphers the hieroglyphics, which are coordinates to a mountain in Peru. Jade, Obsidian, and Brainwave head down there taking Jonni and Skyman (who are near death) with them. When they reach the mountain, they’re attacked by the two Thunderbolts, who have dug up a whole bunch more statuettes, presumably to create more T-bolts. The Thunderbolts attack, willing to kill Jonni and Skyman since they no longer need them. During the fight, Brainwave gleans the T-bolts’ origin from their minds: they crash-landed on Earth millennia ago but couldn’t find suitable human hosts, so they stored their electrical essences inside the statuettes. Eventually, one got free and ended up takingtricking the thunderbolts over Jonni, who traced them back to Peru and tried to destroy them. But the Thunderbolt stopped her, awakened her mate through Skyman, and now wants to find hosts for all the other T-bolts (starting with the other Infinitors) so they can wipe out all life on the planet. The Thunderbolts give the Infinitors a tough fight, but they end up beating the T-bolts using trickery. Turns out “Jonni” and “Skyman” were just illusions cast by Brainwave around the statuettes, so when the Infinitors lure the Thunderbolts into going back inside the supposedly comatose humans, they’re really trapping themselves back in the statuettes. The Infinity trio gather all the statuettes and bury them deep inside the mountain, while back in Los Angeles the real Jonni and Skyman wake up.

Young All-Stars 3 coverYoung All-Stars #3 – “A Call to Arms” – Roy and Dann Thomas/Brian Murray, Howard Simpson/Malcolm Jones III

Last issue, the Nazi super-villains called Axis Amerika attacked All-Star Squadron headquarters just as Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle showed up to introduce Helena Kosmatos to their fellow All-Stars. Johnny and Libby are knocked out, but Helena changes into Fury and goes after Axis Amerika’s leader, Ubermensch. Fights break out all over, as Usil, Fledermaus, and Horned Owl mix it up with various All-Stars. Sea Wolf tackles Firebrand, almost killing her before Flying Fox shows up to stop him. Gudrafighting Axis Amerika the Valkyrie is there too and goes after Hawkman and Hawkgirl, but Shining Knight arrives with Iron Munro to turn the tables. Munro’s super-strength and invulnerability serve him well and he kicks Usil’s ass before getting jumped by Ubermensch. Munro is tough enough that Ubermensch calls a retreat and the Nazi super-team takes off. Lucky for them, as Green Lantern arrives moments later with Neptune Perkins and Tsunami. Fury isn’t happy about Munro taking on her opponent and she’s still confused about how she turned into a superhero, until Johnny Quick tells her she has the power of the Greek Roosevelt talks to Dyna-MiteFuries inside her. Shining Knight informs the team about TNT’s death and Liberty Belle feels guilty for sending him to check out the dam sabotage. A couple nights later, TNT’s young partner (Dyna-Mite) comes to All-Star headquarters with president Roosevelt, who tells Dyna-Mite not to let TNT’s death stop him from being a hero. They head inside the Perisphere to find pretty much the entire All-Star Squadron assembled (and we get to see who was part of the team in the new post-Crisis history). Dyna-Mite accepts a posthumous medal on TNT’s behalf and Liberty Belle introduces the youngsters who helped fight Axis Amerika (Iron Munro, Flying Fox, Fury, Neptune Perkins,Tsunami asks Roosevelt for mercy and Tsunami). We see that Sandman’s partner Sandy is a racist (he uses the word “Jap” about twenty times) and doesn’t like Tsunami being around, but the others are quite moved when she makes a heartfelt plea to President Roosevelt to free her father and other Japanese-Americans from internment camps. Roosevelt promises he’ll look into it and try to do something about it. He suggests the five youngsters go on a war-bond tour across the country and Liberty Belle says they could all be provisional All-Stars. Tsunami and Perkins agree right away and Fury does as well, hoping to learn why Mekanique is Young All-Stars voted inhanging around with the All-Stars. (Fury had a dream about a giant-sized Mekanique wasting All-Stars left and right.) Flying Fox is a Native American who was sent to help the war effort, so he agrees to join the others. Munro isn’t too keen on it, but finally says yes, when Dyna-Mite offers to join the tour too. Sandy offers to go along on the tour, claiming his status as an All-Star will bring recognition. But it’s really to keep an eye on Tsunami, who he figures is a spy for Japan. As the Young All-Stars get ready to head out, we see that Axis Amerika bugged the headquarters during the big fight and are planning on killing al the youngsters to get revenge for their defeat.new All-Star splash
