Legion of Super-Heroes 38 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #38 – “The Greatest Hero of Them All” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This one starts with some Legionnaires (Brainiac 5, Blok, Invisible Kid, Sun Boy, plus Superboy) returning from the present to Superboy’s past in Smallville. They ran into the present-day Superman (in his own title) and found that he isn’t the grown-up version of Superboy as everyone previously thought. Legion of Super-Heroes 37 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #37 – “A Twist in Time” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

Last issue, the Time Institute suffered an attack that left most of it in a pile of rubble. That, coupled with Cosmic Boy and Night Girl’s report about their sojourn to the late 20th Century (and the changes to the timeline brought about by Crisis), make Brainiac 5 suspect that their old enemy the Time Trapper is planning something big. Legion of Super-Heroes 36 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #36 – “Peace, Quiet, and Impending Doom” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with Element Lad resigning as Legion leader, since he feels guilty about becoming Universo’s pawn. The regular election was coming up anyway, so his stepping down doesn’t really cause too much bother. Polar Boy enthusiastically announces he’s running for leader, while Dream Girl says she won’t run but does say she’s voting for Sensor Girl (making everyone wonder if Dreamy had a premonition of who’d win). This one starts with Saturn Girl, Chameleon Boy, Brainiac 5, and Dream Girl back on Earth after escaping the prison planet they were on. They grab a Science Police officer so Saturn Girl can use her mental powers to read his mind and find out why Earth has suddenly isolated itself from the rest of the galaxy. Legion of Super-Heroes 34 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #34 – “Forgotten Foe” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

Last issue, Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, Brainiac 5, and Chameleon Boy escaped from the prison planet where they’d been confined and brainwashed. The first planet they come to after escaping is Naltor, Dream Girl’s homeworld, where they’re welcomed by the High Seer (Beren). Turns out they spent weeks on the prison planet and things have changed on Earth in that time, with the Legion being disbanded and their headquarters shut down. Legion of Super-Heroes 33 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #33 – “Forgotten Planet” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

Last issue, a quartet of Legionnaires (Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, Brainiac 5, and Chameleon Boy) found themselves on a strange planet with a bunch of others, all mind-controlled to be placid field workers. Saturn Girl’s natural psychic powers broke her mind-control and she freed her teammates. They decide to look for a way off the planet, but also want to know who brought them there in the first place and why. Legion of Super-Heroes 32 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #32 – “Forgotten Heroes” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with Imra (Saturn Girl) Ardeen waking up in some kind of work camp with her Legion flight ring gone. Everyone around her is very placid and uncomplaining, eagerly going out to work in the fields harvesting crops and doing other chores. Imra tries mind-reading some of the others, but realizes they’re being controlled and have very strong psychic blocks put in place to keep them from remembering who they are. Legion of Super-Heroes 31 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #31 – “Knights in Shining Armor” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This story is mostly set in the past and features several Legionnaires who have died over the years. It reads like filler, since there’s no reference to the current ongoing storylines. The framing device has Projectra (or Sensor Girl, if you prefer) visiting the grave of her dead husband (Karate Kid) on the Cemetery Asteroid. She runs into Invisible Kid, who’s there to pay tribute to his fallen predecessor and the other Legionnaires who have died. Legion of Super-Heroes 30 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #30 – “Brainy’s Lucky Day” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts at Legion headquarters with Brainiac 5 apologizing to Projectra (or Sensor Girl as she now prefers to be called) for his suspicions about her. Projectra is cool and says she forgives him, which throws him off a bit; I guess he expected her to have some resentment. Ultra Boy, Mon-El, and Blok are preparing to accompany Ambassador Relnic on a diplomatic mission to Dominator space, but they still don’t know Relnic is being controlled by Universo. Legion of Super-Heroes 29 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #29 – “No Star Shall Shine” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This one starts with Mon-El and Shadow Lass on Labyrinth (the new prison planet), where Lars Hanscom, the original Starfinger, has been murdered and a star-shaped burn mark left on his face. They don’t know what to make of it, but promise the authorities to report it to Legion headquarters. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Legion of Super-Heroes 29, New Teen Titans 26”
