Comics Reviews: Legion of Super-Heroes 31, New Teen Titans 28

Legion of Super-Heroes 31 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #31 – “Knights in Shining Armor” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This story is mostly set in the past and features several Legionnaires who have died over the years. It reads like filler, since there’s no reference to the current ongoing storylines. The framing device has Projectra (or Sensor Girl, if you prefer) visiting the grave of her dead husband (Karate Kid) on the Cemetery Asteroid. She runs into Invisible Kid, who’s there to pay tribute to his fallen predecessor and the other Legionnaires who have died. They start talking about life and death and head back to Legion headquarters, where Projectra tells him a story about her early days in theBlack Mace gets away Legion. That’s right, it’s time for some retro fashions, as we get Projectra in one of her funky outfits from the late 60s/early 70s. She’s assigned to deliver a package for R.J. Brande (something to do with the locations of asteroid mines) and uses her illusion power to make it look like she has an escort of burly aliens. She delivers the package, but the recipient is immediately knocked out by a thief named Black Mace, who wields … well, a black mace. Projectra uses her powers against him, but a lucky swing knocks her out and he takes off fighting Black Macewith the mining specs. Projectra returns to HQ to report her failure, but Invisible Kid (that’s the original one, who was leader at the time) isn’t around, so Karate Kid and Ferro Lad decide to help Projectra find Black Mace (since the three of them joined the Legion at the same time) before he can leave Earth with the valuable info. Projectra figures the info will have to be sent to the asteroids quickly and that Black Mace will pass to off to some other courier, so they head for the spaceport. Projectra uses her powers to make the spaceship seem like it’s about to fall apart and everyone evacuates, including an alien named Gharf who has the asteroid specs. They start fighting him, but BlackProjectra confuses Black Mace Mace shows up and uses Projectra as a hostage. Karate Kid kicks his ass, but in the confusion the two villains escape, leaving the valuable info behind. After delivering it to the proper place, the Legion trio decide they’d like to redeem themselves by catching the bad guys. At HQ, Invisible Kid congratulates them for working together to retrieve the info and Bouncing Boy ends up taking Projectra to lunch; I guess he was quite the stud back in the day. Later, Black Mace and Gharf attack the Brande facility where the info is kept, but the three Legionnaires are waiting for them and thanks to Projectra’s illusions, manage to pound them into submission.

New Teen Titans 28 coverNew Teen Titans #28 – “Resurrection” – Marv Wolfman, Paul Levitz/Eduardo Barreto/Romeo Tanghal

This one starts with the Church of Blood preparing a ritual to resurrect Brother Blood on live television. They’ve gathered believers all over the world and are channelling their faith through Raven (who seems to have been converted to a follower) to actually bring Blood back. The Titans know most of it is bullshit and the Church is just preying on people’s faith and gullibility, Brother Blood having faked his death before. But since the Church has Raven (and Nightwing, who’s been brainwashed) they have toAzrael suckering everyone go after them, even at the risk of looking like the bad guys on international TV. The Church uses Azrael to get people worked up, telling everyone he’s the actual archangel from the bible. (He’s really an alien goofball who lost his purpose after his girlfriend dumped him and ended up falling in with the Church.) Azrael plays his part well and with the use of holograms and hallucinogens in the incense, the Church has everyone in the right mindset for the resurrection. The Titans are mustering their forces, calling in Flash (formerly Kid pounding guardsFlash) and Robin, but Flash’s girlfriend Frances Kane refuses to help, wanting no part of being a superhero. Robotman shows up to help and the Titans head to Washington to stop the resurrection. The Church knows the Titans are coming and wants to use their attack as propaganda (and have the brainwashed Nightwiing denounce them to end their threat forever), so Mother Mayhem sends a token force of guards to delay them. The Titans smash through the guards but get distracted when they see Raven’s mother Arella (who’s managed to resist being “converted”) being tortured by the Confessor, aBrother Blood reborn Church member in energy-manipulating armour. Arella tries to warn them it’s a trap before she’s dragged off, but they follow anyway and almost get droned in a flood. They stop the flood and find an alternate route, catching up with the guards just in time to see Confessor kill Arella. Meanwhile, the holograms have shown the worldwide audience a newborn baby and that creates enough faith that the Church can funnel through Raven to bring Brother Blood back for real. This issue reads kinda like filler, with a lot of stuff happening but not a lot of plot advancement. So we’ll have to wait until next issue to see how the Titans deal with Blood.
