Last issue, Lois and Lana contracted an alien virus from an artifact dug up by Lana’s father, the same virus that killed Ma and Pa Kent back when Clark Kent was a teenager. Clark hasn’t told Lois and Lana they’re sick, and the virus affects people based on age so they haven’t shown any symptoms yet, but it’s only a matter of time. This one starts with Clark showing up late (as usual) for a news story at the Metropolis museum. Lois and Lana are already there; Lana’s father (an archaeology professor) has unearthed an ancient glass factory in Venice and brought back numerous pieces. Lana drops a glass vial and when it breaks, weird microbes are released into the air, making Lana, Lois, and even Clark feel a strange tingling sensation … and not in a good way. He changes to Superman and goes after the flying saucer but it turns out to be more formidable than he expected. The splash page calls this the “most awe-inspiring story of the year”; if that’s true, DC was having a pretty crappy year. This starts with Clark Kent showing up at a school as a guest speaker. (The kids are rather disappointed, since they were hoping the surprise guest was Superman.) One of the kids is a smart-ass named Alec and another is a bright student named Shanna. Last issue, Vartox dropped by to let Superman know he was using his hyper-powers as champion for a planet called Tynola, but he also gave Supes a secret message saying he needed help. Vartox said the Tynolans had been staging disasters for him to fix and he wanted to find out why. This one starts with Clark, Lana, and Steve Lombard skiing at Mammoth Mountain. Lana has dragged Clark along so she won’t be stuck with Steve, but Clark has to pretend he hates skiing (and any other form of physical activity) to maintain his nerdish persona. Steve “accidentally” pushes Clark down a slope and goes after him, but a low-flying jet causes an avalanche that threatens to bury both men. This one starts at the royal palace of Kaambuka, where the ruler (Prince Aram Al Ashir) is bored out of his mind with matters of state. He perks when he sees Travis Morgan (and Shakira) outside the throne room, and immediately leaps forward to challenge Morgan to a duel. Ashir boasts that he’s been practicing, but Morgan still manages to defeat him. Before the palace guard can skewer Morgan, Ashir calls them off, explaining that he and Morgan are old friends.
