Legion of Super-Heroes 25 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #25 – “Revelation” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

This one starts with Emerald Empress addressing the new Fatal Five: Persuader, Flare, Caress, and a mystery member who apparently knows the Legion’s secrets quite well. I guess we’re supposed to think it’s Sensor Girl, since she left the Legion last issue, but all we see is a shadow. Meanwhile, the Legionnaires are searching for Sensor Girl, hoping she hasn’t joined the Fatal Five. Dawnstar uses her tracking power to look (avoiding Wildfire’s romantic overtures), while Brainiac 5, Ultra Boy, Phantom Girl, Sun Boy, and Timber Wolf follow in a Legion Cruiser. Brainy is still convinced Sensor Girl isattacking Emerald Empress dangerous (and probably Supergirl in disguise), but when Ultra Boy tells him his penetra-vision showed Sensor Girl’s costume to be empty (last issue), Brainy starts revising his opinion. On Earth, White Witch is using her magic to search for Emerald Empress, with a little help from Blok and Lightning Lass. At the Medi-Complex, we see Rond Vidar is still comatose and most of the doctors are ready to give up and move him to permanent care, but Dr. Fashir says he’d like to keep trying. (Of course, we know he’s secretly under Universo’s control and is doing exactly what Universo wants.) On Titan, Dream Girl, Colossal Boy, Tellus, and Polar Boy are trying to find Mentalla, who vanished from the Legion Academy. Titan’s records show she stopped there briefly before leaving to pounding Manovisit family on Stratus, so she apparently wasn’t kidnapped. But Colossal Boy wants to follow up anyway, so they head for Stratus. Dawnstar follows Sensor Girl’s trail to Shanghalla, the cemetery asteroid, where they get ambushed by Mano (a member of the original Fatal Five). They kick his ass pretty easily, but Sensor Girl’s trail has disappeared, so they wonder if she led them into the ambush on purpose. But when Dawnstar says Sensor Girl’s trail has vanished as if she ceased to exist, Brainy gets an idea. When the Legionnaires looking for Mentalla reach Stratus, they’re attacked by the new Fatal Five and Dream Girl ends up knocked out. The Legionnaires are getting ready to counterattack when they see Sensor Girl flying in andSensor Girl taken down wonder whose side she’s on. On Earth, Element Lad goes to visit Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, to ask why she vouched for Sensor Girl. Saturn Girl says Sensor Girl was already a Legion member, so she had no qualms about trusting her. On Stratus, Sensor Girl helps the Legionnaires against the Fatal Five and we learn that Mentalla is the new mystery member, the one who knows all the legion’s secrets. So I guess that clears up two of the three mysteries, and we’re about to get an answer to the third. When Sensor Girl attacks Emerald Empress, the Emerald Eye blasts her, revealing her to be … Queen Projectra.

New Teen Titans 23 coverNew Teen Titans #23 – “Loser Take All” – Marv Wolfman/Eduardo Barreto/Romeo Tanghal

Last issue, Starfire led some resistance forces in an attack on Tamaran, currently ruled by her sister, Blackfire. Starfire sees her sister as a power-mad tyrant, who only cares about destruction and power for its own sake. For her part, Blackfire admits to herself that she enjoys the power, but under her rulership Tamaran is united in a way it never was when her father ruled, and she’s used her authority to help the Tamaranians with public works and aid programs for those who need it. So she sees Starfire as someone who’s blind to the good she’s done and only wants to wreck things for her (which is a grudge that goes back to their childhood, since BlackfireStarfire destroys the weapons factory was born “crippled”—meaning unable to fly—and Starfire ended up being her parents’ favourite, and their heir). So the stage is set for the sisters to clash and Starfire starts off by destroying power plants and communication centres, to hamper Blackfire’s army. Starfire actually takes it easy on her opponents, realizing that they’ve been duped and don’t deserve to die. I guess her time on Earth has changed her casual attitude toward killing, but when she learns from her brother that most Tamaranians actually support Blackfire, she gets really pissed off and swears to kill her sister. Meanwhile, the Council of Elders tell Blackfire they know about her attempt to kill her family a couple issues ago. She denies it at first, but the Elders point out how well she’s Starfire vs Blackfireruled, adding that she’d be a much better ruler if she didn’t automatically assume violence was the answer to every conflict. That makes her sit up and listen. King Myand’r and his wife secretly beam back to Tamaran and he urges Starfire to stop fighting, since the majority of Tamaranians accept Blackfire’s rule. Starfire refuses and attacks her sister’s main weapons factory, blowing it to hell (along with some of the workers). That pisses Blackfire off so much that she goes after Starfire and the two of them engage in a long battle, hurling accusations at each other the whole time, neither of them willing to listen to the other’s point of view (and Blackfire does seem to have some legitimate grievances). Starfire ends up getting the upper hand, beating the living shit out of her sister. She’s ready to kill Blackfire when Myand’r stops her, saying he’sStarfire almost kills her sister spoken to the Council and accepted that Blackfire is actually a better leader than he was. The Council is willing to have Blackfire as leader (and the people seem happy with her), but insist her parents act as councilors, as a counter to her more violent instincts. Blackfire reluctantly agrees, but that’s more than Starfire can stand. She refuses to stay on Tamaran under Blackfire’s rule and decides to go back to Earth, hoping to rekindle things with Dick. Karras offers to go with her, but she reminds him theirs is a marriage of state, not love, so she heads back to Earth alone.

All-Star Squadron 60 coverAll-Star Squadron #60 – “The End of the Beginning” – Roy Thomas/Mike Clark, Arvell Jones/Vince Coletta, Tony DeZuniga

This one starts with Spectre and Johnny Thunder’s T-bolt combining powers to bring back the JSA members who were lost in alternate dimensions. They go back to Professor Gootsden’s house (where they were before Harbinger accidentally sent they tumbling into other dimensions) and quickly capture him, dismantling his rockets and telling Hitler to go to hell over Gootsden’s radio. Back at the Perisphere, the tense stand-off continues, with Mekanique and Robotman on one side and the All-Stars on the other. Robotman tells the All-Stars Mekanique is built of metals notpreventing the accident found on Earth, so she can’t be a Nazi plant. Mekanique claims to be from the future, come back to prevent an event that will eventually lead to a planet-wide war in her time. The event is a car accident (which is due to take place within minutes), where a kid is run over and the driver dies (kinda reminds me of City of the Edge of Forever, except this time they’re trying to save everyone). Firebrand and Green Lantern fly out to prevent the accident, saving the kid and the driver, who turns out to be an important American admiral. By the time they get back, the missing JSAers have returned, and a bunch of other All-Stars have shown up. They make peace with Mekanique and Johnny Quick sets up Mekanique tells the story of Metropolisa group photo for the President of all the assembled All-Stars. Robotman and Mekanique go for a romantic walk and we find out he added a feature when he was repairing her so that he could hypnotize her electronically, to find out what she’s holding back. He uses that power and Mekanique recounts the plot of the movie Metropolis, but with an added twist: Rotwang built a new female robot and sent it back in time to prevent Maria from ever being born. Robotman isn’t sure how that would work, since nobody died in the car accident, but Mekanique says it has something to do with the Crisis. Somehow, Rotwang has enabled Mekanique to hold back the ramifications of the Crisis, but now she allows those ramifications to happen, wiping Robotman’s memory afterwards so he can’t tell anyone the truth. The two of them head off for some robot sex while inside the Perisphere, Hawkman is re-elected All-Star chairman. Later, the President receives the photo of the assembled All-Stars and we see that it’s been changed, leaving out Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman (although Green Arrow and Speedy are still there for some reason, and Human Bomb and Jester are in the second photo but not the first).original All-Star group photo I guess this is Roy’s way of explaining the changes wrought by the Crisis, wiping out the Earth-2 versions of certain heroes. He’ll try other things (notably in Young All-Stars), but none of it is perfect; the Crisis really takes it’s toll on All-Star Squadron.new All-Star group photo

Infinity Inc 29 coverInfinity Inc. #29 – “Situation Terminal” – Roy Thomas/Todd McFarlane/Tony DeZuniga

This one starts with Yolanda (Wildcat) Montez eavesdropping on Helix in their hideout (an abandoned shopping mall). They’re still arguing about who should lead the group, with Carcharo (who thinks he should be leader), Babe, and Kritter on one side, and Tao Jones, Penny Dreadful, and Arak on the other (wanting to free Mr. Bones from prison and reinstate him as leader). Kritter’s tap into the Infinity Inc computer nets them the info that someone has already busted Bones out of prison, but nobody knows who. Yolanda is still torn over whether to join Infinity Inc (who rejected her membership last issue) orCarcharo attacks Mr. Bones Helix (although she hates the idea that she’s one of them … and really hates the idea of being Carcharo’s cousin). Back at Infinity Inc headquarters, they discuss Fury’s Kanga (a holdover from pre-Crisis that no one can explain) and Ted Grant (the original Wildcat) gives them shit for not allowing Yolanda to join. At the old mall, Penny figures Infinity Inc know where Bones is, so she leads Arak and Tao in an attack on their HQ. Yolanda tries to warn them, but gets captured by Bones, who drags her into the mall. Carcharo pins her under a concrete block and attacks Bones from behind. Carcharo smashes Kritter, Infinity Inc fights Helix triowhich puts him on Babe’s shit list, but he grabs Bones and takes off. Babe follows, vowing to kill Carcharo and save Bones. Yolanda realizes Kritter isn’t dead and talks him into freeing her from the concrete block, and calling Infinity Inc for help. Unfortunately, the Infinitors have their hands full fighting the three Helix members. They manage to take them down (with a little help from the visiting Hourman) and convince them they don’t have Bones. Star-Spangled kid relays the call from Yolanda and Kritter, and the Infinitors decide to go after Carcharo, bringing the Helix members along since they promise to call a truce … at least until Bones is found to be okay. (Arak spills the beans about Yolanda being one of Dr. Love’s experiments and Carcharo’s cousin, but she’d already told Star-Spangled Kid that on the phone.) Carcharo drags Bones to the shore, where a submarine is waiting, but the sub takes off.Dr. Midnight saves Mr. Bones Carcharo realizes his “partner” on the sub (who we don’t get to see) is the one who freed Bones from prison, a fact Bones confirms when he wakes up and starts pounding Carcharo. Yolanda jumps in to help Bones and Babe uses her explosive powers to blow up all of Carcharo’s giant sharks. Bones jams a jagged metal girder right through Carcharo, but that doesn’t stop the hybrid shark from chomping Bones’s lower leg right off. Bones’s cyanide skin finishes Carcharo, but Bones is losing a lot of blood. Luckily Beth (Dr. Midnight) Chapel is there and manages to stabilize him. Helix are grateful enough to keep their word and not try to escape, even knocking out Babe when she tries to get rough. Bones is taken to hospital and Carcharo’s corpse is dragged out of the water, though I can’t help wondering if he’ll somehow be revived.
