Legion of Super-Heroes #29 – “No Star Shall Shine” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr
This one starts with Mon-El and Shadow Lass on Labyrinth (the new prison planet), where Lars Hanscom, the original Starfinger, has been murdered and a star-shaped burn mark left on his face. They don’t know what to make of it, but promise the authorities to report it to Legion headquarters. Elsewhere, we see the killing was ordered by a new Starfinger, who’s thanking the assassin for his good work. But when the assassin gets a little too familiar, Starfinger blasts him, leaving a star-shaped burn on his face too. So this Starfinger has some powers and he seems to have a very efficient staff, almost like he’s running some kind of space-mafia. Back at Legion HQ, a quartet of Legionnaires (Tellus, Wildfire, Quislet, and White Witch) have been assigned to go to Tellus’s home planet of Hykraius to follow up a lead on the Science Police deaths. Since Hykraius is basically one big ocean saturated with methane, Tellus is the only one who’ll really be comfortable there, and the others aren’t sure why the Hykraians requested them specifically. Meanwhile on Mars, at the resort of Nix Olympia, more Legionnaires (Sun Boy, Phantom Girl, Lightning Lass, Polar Boy, and Magnetic Kid) are taking care of some scumbags who have been running a protection racket at the resort. They easily put down the thugs (although Magnetic Kid is having trouble figuring out the best way to use his powers in combat), but one of the resort owners tells them the real threat is the one running the protection racket, Starfinger. At headquarters, Element Lad worries about the Legionnaires being spread too thin, and Dream Girl hits on him again. On Mars, an energy beam from orbit blasts the resort and the Legionnaires scramble to rescue people and protect against more destruction. Phantom Girl goes into orbit and finds a satellite is the source of the beam, so she nudges it out of alignment, causing it to explode. On the way to Hykraius, Tellus explains how his people live in the great ocean and how they didn’t even know there were other planets until the Gil’Dishpan visited from space. Meanwhile, Starfinger is pissed off that the Legion stopped his destruction on Mars. He refuses to attack their HQ (apparently he gave someone his word he’d never strike on Earth), but is perfectly willing to kill the Legionnaires currently on Mars. He sends a heavily-armed cruiser to attack the resort and the Legionnaires manage to disable the ship. But a quartet of Braalians fly out on anti-gravity platforms and start blasting everyone with magnetism. On Earth, we see Ambassador Relnic preparing to embark on a negotiating trip to the Dominion. Relnic plans to bring three Legionnaires along and we learn that Relnic is serving some unseen master (probably Universo). On Mars, Magnetic Kid takes the lead against the four attackers, using his own mastery of magnetism to defeat his fellow Braalians, earning praise from the other Legionnaires. Starfinger is so pissed off the Legionnaires survived, he ends up blasting his own lieutenant for impertinence, and vows to keep fighting the Legion.
New Teen Titans #26 – “Twister Shout” – Marv Wolfman/Eduardo Barreto, Kerry Gammill/Romeo Tanghal
This one starts with a news report by Bethany Snow about the imminent resurrection of Brother Blood. The report shows hundreds of fervent followers of the Church of Blood, including Raven and Nightwing. The other Titans are watching and know the Church is taunting them with the fact their friends have been brainwashed, but they also have crazy Steve Dayton and his Hybrid to worry about. Changeling wants to go after Dayton and help him get over his madness if possible (not to mention rescuing Aqualad, who ended up being dragged to Dayton’s hideout last issue), but he decides rescuing Nightwing and Raven should take precedence. Dayton is using his amped-up powers to spy on them and isn’t happy they aren’t coming after him, but the Hybrid convince him they’ll gladly kill the Titans later. Dayton knows the Hybrid are his unwilling pawns and are just stalling, but he decides to delay his revenge and let the Titans fight Brother Blood (and promises the Hybrid he won’t kill Aqualad). At Titans headquarters, they’ve called Robin in to help, but they know they’re still short-handed. Starfire shows up and receives a warm welcome, and they head off to Zandia for the rescue mission. Unfortunately, they don’t know exactly where Blood’s resurrection will take place, so they try a frontal assault in the Zandian capital. Since Zandia is populated by criminals hiding from extradition, they meet some stiff resistance and have to retreat. The Zandian council gets worried; even though the Titans are only after the Church of Blood, the council figures they might expand their assault to include all the scumbags on the island. A girl called Twister (whose face is all twisted to shit) offers to track down the Brotherhood of Evil and help them fight the Titans. Twister is some kind of genetic experiment of Brother Blood’s; he gave her the power to twist reality so much it can drive people mad, but the result was that her body was twisted out of normal shape. Instead of being pissed off about that, Twister is grateful to Blood for giving her powers and wants to defend the Church. The Titans notice Twister leaving the city and try to intercept her, but she uses her powers to twist reality and they all go a little nuts. She gets away and the effects of her powers wear off after a few minutes, but the Titans are still pretty shaken. Twister goes to Japan and tracks down the Brotherhood, demonstrating her powers and offering them money to defend Zandia. Brain agrees to bring the Brotherhood with her. In Zandia, the Titans target the capital building (leaving a disgruntled Robin behind as back-up) to get a remote control that’ll give them access to Blood’s main church. Cyborg and Jericho get the remote and prepare to head down through some tunnels to the church, while the rest of the team goes in from the front. Starfire decides to join Cyborg and Jericho, to balance things out a bit. But before the trio can head into the tunnels, the Brotherhood shows up to attack them.
