Legion of Super-Heroes #30 – “Brainy’s Lucky Day” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo
This one starts at Legion headquarters with Brainiac 5 apologizing to Projectra (or Sensor Girl as she now prefers to be called) for his suspicions about her. Projectra is cool and says she forgives him, which throws him off a bit; I guess he expected her to have some resentment. Ultra Boy, Mon-El, and Blok are preparing to accompany Ambassador Relnic on a diplomatic mission to Dominator space, but they still don’t know Relnic is being controlled by Universo. Later, Brainiac 5 leads a team to the Niagara Hydroenergy System which supplies power all over North America. Something’s screwing up the facility and massive bursts of energy are shooting all over the place. While Colossal Boy, Timber Wolf, and Dream Girl rescue civilians, Brainy and Lightning Lass head inside to see what’s up. They’re stunned to find Lightning Monsters from Korbal inside, causing all the electrical havoc. On Hykraius, the four Legionnaires sent to answer the summons (Tellus, Wildfire, Quislet, and White Witch) get their first taste of the place, where the natives live in a a vast ocean of methane. At Niagara, Lightning Lass herds the Lightning Monsters outside and Brainy gets an idea of how to get them away from the facility safely. He gives Lightning Lass his force-field belt but she doesn’t know how to use it, so Dream Girl takes it and uses it to hold back the Lightning Monsters. Elsewhere on Earth, we see some of President Desai’s advisors discussing the Niagara situation and we learn that Universo has been masquerading as the Vice-President, Vid-Gupta. At Niagara, Brainy brings back some steel cable and uses it to ground the Lightning Monsters, knocking them out. On Hykraius, the Legionnaires are told that Atmos and one of the missing Science Police officers were seen there. They go to investigate, but we see that Universo’s influence extends even this far and some of the Hykranians are his puppets. On Earth, Sun Boy talks Brainy and Dawnstar into going to a dance club. Brainy soon gets bored and heads home, running into Dr. Chaseer from the Time Institute. At Legion HQ, Element Lad is worrying about having all the most powerful members away, but he’s distracted when Polar Boy tells him he wants to run for leader next term. Outside, Brainy is just getting home at dawn and runs into Shrinking Violet and Lightning Lass (who are planning a getaway together … more evidence of their budding romance). I’m not sure if Brainy coming home so late means he got lucky with Dr. Chaseer, but he’s in a pretty good mood … until he gets a message that his friend Rond Vidar died the night before.
New Teen Titans #27 – “The Brotherhood of Evil” – Marv Wolfman/Kerry Gamill/Romeo Tanghal
Last issue, the Titans went to Zandia to rescue Nightwing and Raven from Brother Blood’s church. But Blood’s minions hired the Brotherhood of Evil to fight the Titans and they started by attacking Cyborg, Starfire, and Jericho inside the Zandian government building. Starfire is quickly tossed outside and the others mix it up, the two Titans being overwhelmed by superior numbers (although Jericho does manage to get inside Phobia and control her for a short time). While the Brotherhood argues over what to do with Jericho, Cyborg (who was injured fighting Plasmus) escapes. The rest of the Titans (Wonder Girl, Changeling, and Robin) find Starfire and Wonder Girl orders a retreat so they can regroup and figure out what to do about the Brotherhood. Meanwhile, the Brotherhood are torturing Jericho with Phobia’s nightmare powers and Cyborg is crawling through the back alleys of Zandia trying to evade the search parties. He finally collapses and is found by a couple of Zandians. Luckily, they have a grudge against Brother Blood, so they take Cyborg home to hide him. The Brotherhood attach Jericho to a lightning rod on the capitol building during a storm, calling for the Titans to surrender to keep him from being fried. Wonder Girl is ready to acquiesce but Starfire talks her out of it, saying if they give in now they’ll never beat Blood. Wonder Girl agrees, but says she can’t risk everyone’s life; she goes to free Jericho and orders the others to head to the Church. Meanwhile, Brain and Monsieur Mallah are sneaking through the catacombs under Zandia and Brain tells Mallah his true purpose in coming to Zandia … he wants to find Brother Blood’s resurrection pool because he’s dying. The rest of the Brotherhood (and Twister, who brought them to Zandia last issue) are searching for Cyborg and Twister finds him, but in a plot twist worthy of her name, the family hiding him turns out to be hers. They say they still love her, despite her twisted physique and the fact she now works for Brother Blood. Their acceptance confuses her, since Blood’s brainwashing taught her he was the only one who cared about her. Cyborg takes off, knowing Twister’s family will be killed for helping him. Twister goes after him and calls for help, but doesn’t tell the Brotherhood that her family sheltered Cyborg. Wonder Girl rescues Jericho from the roof but the lightning is still attracted to the metal pole he’s strapped to, so she’s forced to deflect it with her bracelets. She’s knocked out, but Jericho takes over her body and deflects more lightning before heading for the main church. The Titans run into the Brotherhood outside the capitol and start fighting them, wondering where Brain and Mallah are. They’re still underground and have found Blood’s resurrection pit. Brain orders Mallah to immerse him in the pit. The Titans do pretty well against the Brotherhood and Twister decides to stay out of the fight, grateful that Cyborg thought of her parents’ welfare when he took off. When the Titans try to apprehend her, Twister uses her powers on them and takes off. Cyborg is already inside the capitol and hacks the computers to find out the location of Blood’s church in the USA. He sabotages the main computer and evacuates the place, which blows up a few minutes later. Brain and Mallah are still below and Brain is being immersed in the resurrection pit, which has cured his disease. He wants to be immersed again, to gain immortality, but the place above explodes just as Mallah is lowering him into the pit.
