Justice League of America #261 – “Last Stand” – J. M. DeMatteis/Luke McDonnell/Bob Lewis
This one begins with Professor Ivo thinking about his actions of the last few issues, which have resulted in the deaths of Steel, Vibe, and Gypsy. (Gypsy’s not really dead, she’s back with her family, but Ivo doesn’t know that.) Ivo is doing another therapy session with a robot analyst and he blows the robot up when it points out how wrong he is to take out his frustrations on the JLA … especially since this new JLA has never even met him before. Meanwhile, Vixen is prowling the streets in full Wolverine mode, tracking Ivo down with her enhanced senses so she can kill him. J’onn J’onzz is still in Detroit with Hank Heywood and Dale Gunn, commiserating over their dead teammates. Heywood gives J’onn a device to track Ivo’s robots back to their source and J’onn prepares to go finish Ivo for good. Dale reminds him that goes against everything the League stands for, but J’onn points out that the League no longer exists. Vixen gets inside Ivo’s hideout and confronts him. He tries to play the civilized host and offers her tea, but her senses tell her it’s poisoned. She attacks Ivo and his robots come in to defend him. Vixen is almost overwhelmed, but J’onn shows up and helps her pound the robots. J’onn is ready to kill Ivo, but stops himself at the last second. Vixen isn’t quite so forgiving and goes after Ivo, who turns out to be another robot. They find the real Ivo is a straitjacket in a nearby room, raving about how sorry he is for all the deaths. J’onn realizes that Ivo built the robots and imbued them with his own feelings (part of which hated the JLA and part of which knew killing them was wrong), but he’s so insane that J’onn actually feels sorry for him. J’onn tells Vixen the League should go on, to fight against evil and injustice. But Vixen is disillusioned and says she’s had enough. She says goodbye to J’onn, leaving him as the last JLAer. (Don’t worry, she’ll be popping up soon in Suicide Squad.) And J’onn is still a Leaguer through and through, so when the emergency signal sounds … he answers it. That leads into J’onn joining the new JLA, who we’ll see in their own series in a couple of weeks. But that’s it for the original JLA run.
Infinity Inc. #37 – “The Heritage” – Roy and Dann Thomas/Todd McFarlane/Tony DeZuniga
This one starts with the aftermath of last issue: the Global Guardians say goodbye to the Infinitors, with Tasmanian Devil giving Wildcat a big smooch that makes Nuklon jealous as hell (though he won’t admit it); Solomon Grundy’s weird affection for Jade continues (not even letting her twin brother get too close); and Hourman is freaking out because he killed Wizard (and possibly from the side-effects of taking the Miraclo pills). The rest of the issue is devoted to the origin of Northwind, the team’s most boring member. I guess Roy was trying to establish a definitive post-Crisis origin, but I think some of it will end up getting contradicted later (due to discrepancies over the Golden and Silver Age Hawkmans and when one supplanted the other). Northwind goes to Feithera to see his grandfather, Worla, who recounts his story, some of which we’ve already seen. Worla goes over how Hawkman and Hawkgirl helped defeat invaders in Feithera and kept the location secret from outsiders. But Worla knew from the ancient scrolls of Thoth that Hawkman’s son would carry a great capacity for evil because he was born without a soul. This has to do with Hawkman and Hawkgirl being the reincarnations of ancient Egyptians murdered by Hath-Set; because Hawkgirl was pregnant, whatever child she gave birth to in a later incarnation would be soulless and would use the Eye of Ra to commit evil deeds. Northwind didn’t believe Worla’s earlier warnings, but after seeing Hector Hall with Hath-Set’s dagger a couple of issues ago, now he does. Worla tells Northwind that he infused the power of Thoth into him before his birth so he could fight the evil that would one day manifest in Hector. Worla then goes over stuff we’ve already seen, like Hector’s jealousy of Northwind, Northwind’s rejection of Feitheran leadership, and the two of them joining Infinity Inc. (I guess Hector’s weird jealousy is supposed to be because of the curse, not just because he’s an asshole.) Northwind finally accepts that he’s meant to fight against the ancient evil that’s manifesting in Hector and tells Worla that he doesn’t want to kill Hector … but he will if he has to.
