Legion of Super-Heroes #35 – “Forgotten Friends” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr
This one starts with Saturn Girl, Chameleon Boy, Brainiac 5, and Dream Girl back on Earth after escaping the prison planet they were on. They grab a Science Police officer so Saturn Girl can use her mental powers to read his mind and find out why Earth has suddenly isolated itself from the rest of the galaxy.Supposedly some kind of alien sleeping plague affected Earth and President Desai decided to take steps to protect the planet from future problems, but the Legionnaires realize that doesn’t make much sense, since chaos would’ve ensued if everyone on Earth suddenly fell asleep. They figure their guess about Universo being behind this is correct and that he must’ve brainwashed people to believe what he wants, as well as disbanding the Legion. They wonder if Desai is actually Universo in disguise and decide they’d better check him out. In Metropolis, Ultra Boy and Mon-El (who are obviously under Universo’s control) round up a Durlan, thinking he might be Chameleon Boy. He’s not, but President Desai has restricted access to Earth by alien species, so they take him in anyway. That night, Saturn Girl and the others break into the presidential palace and fight their way through security to find Desai. Unfortunately, Saturn Girl’s mind probe confirms Desai isn’t Universo, just another puppet being controlled by him. Speaking of puppets, a contingent of their fellow Legionnaires busts in to apprehend them. Brainy has a plan to hold off their teammates, but Saturn Girl has a plan of her own to root out Universo. She stuns the other Legionnaires with a mental blast and takes off, while Brainy, Cham, and Dreamy head downtown. The Legionnaires recover and go looking for the fugitives, who have taken refuge in Brainy’s original lab, where COMPUTO once held off the entire Legion. The Legionnaires track them down quickly, but Brainy uses his force field tech and some fancy weapons to give himself and his two friends a chance. They do pretty well, but the odds are certainly against them. Meanwhile, Saturn Girl seeks out former President Marte Allon to see if she can help figure out which government official Universo is masquerading as. At Brainy’s lab, Dream Girl is knocked out but Brainy and Cham take out their attackers. But more hypnotized Legionnaires show up and overwhelm them. Saturn Girl gets back into the presidential palace and confronts Vid Gupta, the President’s aide, who admits he’s Universo. He has Ultra Boy and Mon-El as bodyguards, so he isn’t too worried about Saturn Girl, but she surprises him by taking out the two most powerful Legionnaires with her psychic powers. She engages Universo in a mental duel and resists his power long enough to beat the shit out of him. When more enthralled Legionnaires arrive, she uses Universo’s hypnosis medallion to free them from his control and they help her free everyone else’s mind (including President Desai), restore the Legion, and end Earth’s isolation. Desai tells Saturn Girl she can have any reward she names, but what she really wants is to return to active duty with the Legion. Naturally, they welcome her back. (What else could they do after she saved all their asses?)
New Teen Titans #32 – “Trivial Pursuits” – Paul Levitz/Eduardo Barreto/Pablo Marcos
This one starts with Starfire enjoying being back home in her new loft. Donna (Wonder Girl) Troy and Terry Long show up to pick up Starfire for a trip to a mountain cabin. After all the crazy shit that’s happened lately, the team is taking a vacation to wind down. Cyborg is flying the Titans’ jet up to the mountains, but Changeling isn’t with him because he’s out looking for his crazy father, Steve Dayton. Raven is already up in the woods, communing with nature (well, with a snake and a rabbit). She’s glad to be free of Brother Blood’s influence, especially since the power boost he gave her seems to have stuck. Nearby, some kids are arguing (or maybe re-enacting Lord of the Flies) and two of them fall in the river. The Titans rescue them before heading to the inn to meet Terry, who’s planned out their whole vacation in minute detail. Dick (Nightwing) Grayson shows up late, but the others are glad to see him. Terry suggests joining a murder mystery game at the inn to have some fun, but Dick figures a crime solving game is too much like what they really do. When they go to check out the game, they find someone really has been murdered, so they decide they’d better help solve the real crime. Dick checks out the cops’ notebook, which focuses on three suspects: the inn’s owner, his son (who is just home from medical school and was supposed to play the murder victim until the real one turned up), and some other dude named Chuck (who just happens to have a criminal record). Wonder Girl and Raven follow Chuck when he slips out of the inn and heads into the woods. They atch him dig up a rifle and meet a couple other guys. They turn out to be hunters looking to kill an eagle. Wonder Girl, Starfire, and Raven stop them and Raven causes them to feel the fear the eagle felt, which makes them turn themselves in to the cops. They had nothing to do with the murder though, so Dick and Cyborg spy on the owner and his son. The owner’s worried that the inn hasn’t been doing such great business lately and thinks a murder won’t exactly help. Dick and Starfire argue about their relationship; Dick can’t get past the fact that she’s married to someone on Tamaran, even though it’s only for political purposes. He sends her to New York to check a hunch he has and she confirms it. Dick tells the investigating officer to check the innkeeper’s son out, suggesting that he took a cadaver from his med school to use as a “murder victim” hoping the publicity would help his father’s inn. (The cops already determined the body had been dead for a while, so they were on the right track anyway.) Now that the excitement is over, Terry asks the Titans what they’d like to do to pass the time and Dick suggests they play Clue, which his teammates don’t find very funny.
Suicide Squad #2 – “Trial By Fire” – John Ostrander/Luke McDonnell/Karl Kesel
This one starts with the Suicide Squad (Rick Flag, Bronze Tiger, Deadshot, Enchantress, Captain Boomerang, Plastique, and Mindboggler) in Qurac outside the mountain headquarters of the terrorist group the Jihad. The Squad is there to take the Jihad out before they can carry out an attack inside the United States. Everybody freaks out when Chimera (a Jihad member) warps into their midst, but Flag assures them she’s on their side. Turns out “Chimera” is really Nightshade, who’s infiltrated the Jihad, but she’s pissed off at Flag for making her party to the airport massacre we saw last issue. Flag reminds her a lot more innocents will die if they don’t stop the Jihad and she agrees to go along with the plan, but is still mad. Flag gives everyone their assignments and tells them there’s another deep cover agent inside who will be helping them. Nightshade warps everyone to their respective assignments where they’re told to wait until Briscoe (the Squad’s pilot) provides a distraction by attacking the fortress. Plastique immediately leaves her assigned area and starts roaming the complex until she finds Mushtaq, the guy who hired the Jihad. Plastique offers to tell Mushtaq everything about the Suicide Squad’s plan, since she considers herself a revolutionary like him. But “Mushtaq” turns out to be Nemesis, the other deep cover Squad agent, and he tries to capture her. She blasts him and takes off, forcing him to chase her and ignore his own assignment (which was to blow up the generators in the complex). Briscoe starts the attack and everyone swings into action. Mindboggler takes out the grunts, while Deadshot goes after Manticore and Bronze Tiger tackles Ravan. Nightshade warps to President Marlos’s suite, but before she can grab him, Plastique shows up and blasts her. Marlos figures Plastique is there to kill him and takes off. Nemsis knocks Plastique out before she can catch Marlos, but he gets away. Flag mixes it up with Rustam, the Jihad’s leader, but Rustam takes off when Flag is distracted by a call from Nemesis. Captain Boomerang takes Jaculi down, tossing him off the roof and Deadshot kills Manticore with a face full of bullets. Bronze Tiger breaks Ravan’s back but leaves him alive, saying he doesn’t kill anymore. Enchantress deals with Jinn, who’s computer-generated and their fight destroys the computer room, but leaves Enchantress weak. Bronze Tiger gets her out of danger. Mindboggler is handling the troops pretty well, but doesn’t see Rustam sneaking up behind her. Boomerang does see him, but lets Rustam shoot her in the back because he’s still pissed off about how Mindboggler humiliated him last issue. The Squad regroups on the hangar deck and uses a Jihad plane to escape, Nemesis staying behind to work the catapult launcher. Briscoe picks Nemesis up and they all take off, leaving Rustam and President Marlos to talk about rebuilding the Jihad … and getting revenge.
