Legion of Super-Heroes #36 – “Peace, Quiet, and Impending Doom” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo
This one starts with Element Lad resigning as Legion leader, since he feels guilty about becoming Universo’s pawn. The regular election was coming up anyway, so his stepping down doesn’t really cause too much bother. Polar Boy enthusiastically announces he’s running for leader, while Dream Girl says she won’t run but does say she’s voting for Sensor Girl (making everyone wonder if Dreamy had a premonition of who’d win). Brainiac 5 and Saturn Girl think Element Lad is being too hard on himself, so they decide to campaign in favour of him staying on as leader. Later, Sensor Girl, Tellus, and Saturn Girl are taking Universo (now in suspended animation) to prison and Saturn Girl probes his mind to find out why he enslaved the Legion. Turns out Universo wanted to attack Oa (a planet that’s off-limits in this time period), but Saturn Girl doesn’t know why. Back on Earth, various Legionnaires are cleaning up the mess Universo left and disabling the hypnotic devices he used to enslave Earth. The campaign goes on and it seems like the younger members favour Polar Boy, while the older ones lean toward Sensor Girl. Wildfire visits Quislet and asks how he helped control Wildfire’s energy form when it was pulled from his containment suit. Quislet makes Wildfire a humanoid body out of anti-energy and promises he can show Wildfire how to do it for himself. In Downtown Metropolis, Timber Wolf is out with his new girlfriend, Marella Tao, a holo-news reporter. Back at headquarters, Shrinking Violet is getting seriously ripped while everyone awaits the results of the election. Polar Boy wins and we get reactions from the different Legionnaires (mostly positive). Elsewhere, Brainiac 5 and Circadia Senius visit Rond Vidar’s tomb and Brainy wonders if it’s time for him to go back to Colu. Polar Boy is sworn in as leader, but Sensor Girl (who came in second) has no desire to be Deputy Leader, so Polar Boy talks Element Lad (who was third in the voting) into accepting that post. Element Lad tells him that Cosmic Boy and Night Girl are back from their sojourn to the 20th Century and that things have changed from what the Legionnaires thought they knew about that era. This is more fallout from the Crisis and it starts with the Time Institute crumbling to the ground. We’ll see more repercussions next issue.
New Teen Titans #33 – “The City Came Tumblin Down” – Paul Levitz/Erik Larsen/Romeo Tanghal
This one starts with the Titans watching a video from Changeling updating them on his search for his crazy father, Steve Dayton. The video makes them feel better, since they hadn’t heard from Changeling lately, and Cyborg says finding Dayton is something Changeling needs to do alone. Their conversation is interrupted when a bridge across from their headquarters collapses. They rush to shore up the bridge, rescue people, and (thanks to Raven’s new powers) calm everyone down. They soon realize the bridge collapse was no accident … someone blew it up on purpose. Later, Starfire takes Raven to look for a place to live, telling Raven that isolating herself from the world isn’t a great way to be. In nearby Central Park, we see the terrorists responsible for the bridge attack; they’re from Zandia, but are disillusioned with Brother Blood (thanks to the Titans exposing his as a fraud) and want Zandia freed from his influence. They’re committing acts of terrorism as a way of forcing the American government to intervene in Zandia, but the Titans screwed up their plans with the bridge rescue, so they have to try again. Meanwhile, Cyborg gets some TLC from Sarah at STAR Labs. The Zandian terrorists send their threats to various radio stations, but are ignored. So they decide to crash a train full of explosives into Shea Stadium. While one terrorist is wiring the explosives to the train, the cops see him and start shooting. Nightwing, Wonder Girl, Starfire, and Cyborg show up to help, disabling the train and catching the terrorist, who soon spills what he knows. The whole team heads up to the Hudson Valley, where the remaining three terrorists are planning to blow up a dam to cut off New York’s water supply. They blow the dam, but the Titans manage to shore up the rubble enough to dam the river again, and Wonder Girl catches two of the terrorists. The third (Biarra) takes off, wondering why the Titan are stopping them, since they fought Brother Blood and should want Zandia freed from his influence. Raven uses her powers to interrogate the other two, learning that Biarra is headed to Indian Point Nuclear Plant to blow it up in one last gesture. The Titans get there as Biarra prepares to blow the plant with a car bomb, but Nightwing talks her out of it (the others letting him, so he can regain some of his confidence).
Suicide Squad #3 – “Jailbreak” – John Ostrander/Luke McDonnell/Karl Kesel
This one starts with Darkseid preparing to send the Female Furies to break Glorious Godfrey out of prison. Darkseid blames Godfrey for the failure of his Legends scheme, but wants to punish Godfrey himself. Lashina and Bernadeth clash over leadership of the Furies, but Darkseid puts Lashina in charge. At Belle Rêve, Rick Flag finds Plastique being tortured in Dr. Moon’s brain machine. Karin explains that it’s technically not torture, they’re just wiping her memories of Suicide Squad (since she betrayed them last issue). Karin says Amanda Waller ordered the mind-wipe, so Flag will have to take it up with her. Waller’s making friends all over, as Nightshade gives her shit for not warning her the Jihad would be killing actual people in their demonstration, forcing Nightshade to go along with that to maintain her cover. Waller says there wasn’t time to warn her and points out that things won’t get any easier from here on out. We learn how Nemesis managed to survive his last encounter with the Crime Council (in Brave & Bold 193) and was rescued by government agents. Waller offered him a chance to use his skills to balance the scales of justice, but Nemesis is wondering if the balance isn’t tipping the wrong way. Captain Boomerang asks for quarters outside Belle Rêve and Waller says she’ll get him a place in New Orleans, as long as he doesn’t start committing crimes again. Flag gives Waller shit for mind-wiping Plastique, but she doesn’t back down. The argument is interrupted when the Female Furies show up to get Godfrey out. Boomerang hides, not wanting to fight other criminals, and Deadshot refuses to help. Bronze Tiger goes against Stompa, who kicks his ass with her super-strength. Flag and a squad of heavily-armed troops can’t stop Mad Harriet, and Bernadeth pounds Nightshade, despite Nightshade using her darkness powers. Lashina busts Godfrey out and goes right through Nemesis and some security robots. But before Lashina can follow the others through the warp, Bernadeth attacks her and she’s left behind, getting dumped outside the prison walls. The Squad reviews the attack and realizes they’re lucky to be alive, since invaders from Apokolips are a little out of their league. Nightshade and Nemesis tell Waller they agree with Flag about the mind-wiping and Waller says she was wrong to order it and that it won’t happen again. Is it just me, or did she change her mind a little too easily?
