Justice League International #9 – “Seeing Red” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Al Gordon
Like all the January issues, this one ties into the Millennium mini-series. It starts with the JLI returning from being briefed about the Manhunters, but before they have time to digest that knowledge, their new teammate Rocket Red announces that he is a Manhunter. He tries to talk them into joining the Manhunters’ cause, but when they refuse he attacks. Not only does he hold off the team, but he diverts their jet to the terrorist nation of Bialya, hoping to crash it into an oil refinery to both discredit and eliminate the League. But some real Rocket Reds show up to grab the plane before it crashes, sending the Manhunter into the refinery, where he explodes. While Guy contains the fire, Bialya’s leader (Rumaan Harjavti) comes out yelling about unwanted incursions, but when the Rocket Reds vouch for the JLA, Harjavti has no choice to accept their (temporary) presence. The Manhunter rises from the rubble to kill everyone, but Booster Gold uses his force-field to contain the blast, so the Manhunter just ends up destroying itself. J’onn and Batman worry about how deep the Manhunter infiltration goes. Back in New York, Maxwell Lord is worrying about the same thing. Max talks to his sentient computer, which apparently can observe superheroes all over the Earth (and is aware of their secret identities, since Clark Kent is on one of the screens), but can’t figure out what to do about the Manhunters. Max gets a surprise when his secretary comes in and shoots him, proving herself to be a Manhunter. The computer takes care of her, but Max looked like he was hurt pretty badly … or maybe dead. There’s a back-up story set in Bialya that takes place just before the oil-field explosion in the main story. Harjavti meets with Jack O’Lantern and offers to set him up as a “freedom fighter” (aka terrorist) to strike back at the rich, imperialist countries like the USA and Russia. Jack O’Lantern knows Harjavti’s using him, but he doesn’t trust the Americans or Russians and really seems to believe the JLI are their tools. (I’m sure it’s not just sour grapes that Jack’s organization (the Global Guardians) was dissolved to make way for the new international League.) Anyway, Jack says he’ll think about Harjavti’s offer and maybe recruit a few like-minded superhumans to help.
Infinity Inc. #46 – “Swamped” – Roy and Dann Thomas/Vince Argondezzi/Tony DeZuniga
This one starts with Todd (Obsidian) Rice and Marcie Cooper hanging out and getting romantic (although it sounds like they’ve already banged). Marcie has a surprise for Todd and it’s not lingerie, like he’s hoping … she’s actually the new Harlequin. If that wasn’t enough, she reveals she’s a Manhunter and only zeroed in on Todd after Northwind went back to Feithera. Marcie wants to recruit some Infinitors to the Manhunter cause and when Todd refuses, she tries to blackmail him, claiming his new car was payola since he works at a radio station. (Of course, Marcie actually set up the whole deal with the car, but it’s Todd who’ll be in shit over it.) Todd takes off to consider his options. At Molly Scott’s place (she was the original Harlequin, in case you forgot), Dan Richards (the Manhunter) and his dog Thor are there for a visit. Jade and Brainwave stop by and Jade is pissed off that Skyman is blaming her because Solomon Grundy took off last issue. After thy leave, Dan reveals that Marcie Cooper is his granddaughter and that she’s mixed up with the Manhunters. He came to see Molly because she once worked with the Manhunters (they gave her the hypnotic glasses she used as a supervillain), but she says the Manhunters never asked her to do anything. Dan says the same and mentions that they gave him Thor, who hasn’t aged since the 1940s. If that sounds weird, we can see by the robotic glint in Thor’s eye that he’s a Manhunter. (You’d think Dan would be suspicious but he just assumes the Manhunters did something to extend Thor’s lifespan and keep him healthy.) A knock at the door gives Molly a shock when she opens it to see … Green Lantern, her supposedly dead husband. It turns out to be Marcie, using the hypno-glasses she stole from Molly. Dan realizes she’s working for the Manhunters and tries to grab the glasses, but they’re booby-trapped. He sics Thor on Marcie, but she reveals he’s a Manhunter too and orders him to kill Dan and Molly. They take off in Dan’s car, running Thor down in the process. Marcie uses the hypno-glasses to create an illusion that forces them to crash the car. At Infinity Inc headquarters the next day, they argue about where Solomon Grundy might’ve gone and Obsidian tells the others about Marcie being a Manhunter (though he keeps the blackmail stuff to himself). The Guardians let them know that Floronic Man (one of the humans the Manhunters are looking for) has escaped from Arkham Asylum and is hiding in the Louisiana bayous, so they agree to go look for him. In Louisiana, some of the Infinitors (Jade, Wildcat, Obsidian, Hourman, and Mr. Bones) find Floronic Man, who’s riding on a boat with a woman named Dr. Weston (who’s a Manhunter, of course). Floronic man takes off, chased by Jade, who soon regrets it when he uses his powers to wrap her in tree branches. (Like her father, the Golden Age Green Lantern, jade is vulnerable to wood.) Obsidian goes after Weston, but his power won’t work on a robot, so Wildcat jumps in to slice her up a bit. Wildcat gets tossed to the gators, so Hourman has to tackle Weston. Bones helps Wildcat against the alligators and Hourman blows the Manhunter to shit by setting off its self-destruct. Jade is about to be strangled when Solomon Grundy shows up to save her, his affection for her undimmed by the recent separation. He’s pounding Floronic Man and won’t stop when Jade tells him to, so she decks him with her green energy. She feels guilty about it and wonders if they should just leave Grundy in the swamp, but they end up taking him and Floronic Man back to Los Angeles.
Young All-Stars #8 – “Manhunters of the World, Unite” – Roy and Dann Thomas/Brian Murray/Malcolm Jones III
This one starts with the two 1940s Manhunters (Paul Kirk and Dan Richards) going to separate secret meetings, but being teleported into the presence of the Grandmaster. As usual, they’re ready to fight each other until the Grandmaster informs them they were both recruited as operatives by his organization. Of course, Paul and Dan both believe the Manhunters are good guys who fight evil in the world, not murderous robots bent on taking over from humanity. We see Dan’s dog Thor is a Manhunter robot, but we already knew that from the present-day Infinity Inc story above. Grandmaster tells the two heroes they need to eliminate a threat to the entire planet … Green Lantern. In New York, Iron Munro and Flying Fox are discussing the changes in their lives now that they’re superheroes. Munro talks a bit about family (he never knew his father, but is quite close to his mom) and Flying Fox suggests he call his mother from the Perisphere. When they get there, Dyna-Mite and Fury are messing around with the control board and Munro kicks them out so he can call his mom. They go to the pool (well, more of a water tank, really) where Neptune Perkins and Tsunami are frolicking. They get an emergency call from Munro and find the two Manhunters with Doiby Dickles (GL’s sidekick) waiting in the conference room. They check out some news footage of Green Lantern attacking a military base in Hawaii and taking off with a Japanese prisoner. Doiby says GL has gone nuts and asks them to bring him down before he hurts someone, but we see by the gleam in Doiby’s eye that he’s actually a Manhunter robot. He gives the All-Stars a piece of paper supposedly left by GL and they figure out it contains latitude and longitude coordinates for three places. GL’s already been to Hawaii, so they split up to cover the other two places. As they prepare to leave, we see Tigress has gotten inside their headquarters and is spying on them again. After they leave, the Doiby robot self-destructs. One team of All-Stars (the Dan Richards Manhunter, Dyna-Mite, Flying Fox, and Tsunami) head for Attu in the Aleutian Islands, flown there by an aviation cadet named Hop Harrigan (who had his own strip back in the 40s). They find GL attacking an Inuit village, using his ring to sow panic by creating an image of Sedna, the great mother of all sea creatures. Tsunami breaks up the image with a tidal wave and the All-Stars attack. GL fights back but Flying Fox knocks him on his ass with a log (GL’s ring having no effect on wood). But when Flying Fox tries to remove GL’s ring, it activates and knocks the All-Stars out. GL is horrified when he wakes up, but the ring seems to exert an influence on him and he soon turns into an asshole again and takes off to complete his mission.
