Legion of Super-Heroes #47 – “Conspiracy Theory” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque, Pat Broderick/Mike DeCarlo
This one starts with some Legionnaires (Lightning Lass, Tellus, Timber Wolf, Quislet, and Magnetic Kid) at a broadcasting tower in the Atlantic. The tower caught fire for some reason, so the Legionnaires do damage control and rescue people inside. Tellus gets distracted and afterwards tells Magnetic Kid that there’s some kind of conspiracy in the Legion and that Saturn Girl is part of it … a fact he gleaned telepathically right from Saturn Girl’s mind. Out in space, Ultra Boy, Phantom Girl, Dawnstar, and Shadow Lass are returning from Rimbor and Dawnstar is pissed off that Phantom Girl lied about finding Chameleon Boy. Phantom Girl says she made a judgment call, since Cham’s Espionage Squad gets more leeway as far as unsanctioned missions go. On Ventura, Cham has convinced some of Starfinger’s men that he’s an alien criminal named Reefej, hoping to get deep enough in the organization to confirm that Starfinger is really still alive and in charge. But he has to prove himself by extorting money and ripping off casinos, which he’s fine with since he’s not really hurting anyone. Back at Legion headquarters, Brainiac 5 is still acting weird (even for him) and Sensor Girl tells him she knows what he’s doing (he’s heading the conspiracy) and that it could be dangerous, but she doesn’t try to stop him or even talk him out of it. Polar Boy goes on a patrol mission with a team, leaving Tellus to wonder who he should tell about his suspicions. On Mars, Cham is ordered to assassinate some guy who pissed Starfinger off. He warns the guy ahead of time, then pretends to kill him, using his chameleon ability to play the guy’s corpse when his fellow assassins check his story. At Nullport, everyone is worried about some new Khund warships and they freak out when one appears. But Mon-El (who’s also part of the conspiracy and has been acting weird for a long time) flies out and smashes the ship enough to force it to retreat back into Khund space. At Legion HQ, Tellus asks Shrinking Violet for advice on whether he should spill what he knows without actually getting into specifics. (Violet is getting seriously pumped up in the gym; I’m not sure if she and Lightning Lass are an item yet, but maybe she figures Ayla likes the butch look.) On Mars, Cham’s fakery finally pays off when he’s taken to see Starfinger in person. The villain praises “Reefej” and brands him with his mark, but Cham figures he’s one step closer to putting Starfinger in prison. On Earth, Colossal Boy has disappeared and his parents tell his worried wife (Yera) to contact the Legion. At the Academy, Tellus lets Duo Damsel (his old teacher) know about the conspiracy and she says to keep things quiet while she checks it out … but we soon find out she’s part of the conspiracy too.
New Teen Titans #44 – “The Cuckoo Conspiracy” – R.J.M. L’officier/Michael Collins/Romeo Tanghal
This story is straight out of a James Bond movie, right down to the opening with an agent being chased on skis and blowing away his pursuers. The story starts with Danny Chase’s parents visiting him at Titans’ Headquarters and suggesting Danny take the Titans to meet his grandfather. Apparently the old man lives in a retirement community for inactive agents in North Dakota, so the Titans head up there with Danny. They meet Danny’s grandpa (Franklin Chase) and are amazed by the fancy compound where he and the other retired agents live. (I get the feeling Franklin is supposed to look like someone famous, but I can’t figure out who it is; we do get a glimpse of Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin of Man From UNCLE fame, though.) In London, an assassin named Catalyst buys info from a double agent on a British agent called 007 … uh, I mean Cuckoo, who’s currently (and coincidentally) at the same compound as the Titans. The villains hire Godiva to kill Cuckoo and we see a guy named Dr. Cornelius (who’s not an ape) is running things. Whoever this guy is, even Godiva is afraid of him, so he must be important. The next day, King Faraday shows up at the compound with a British agent, Sir Cyril of Wordenshire (who used to be the Squire, in partnership with his father, The Knight). Cyril says a bunch of scumbags are pushing to make Europe a “superhero-free zone”, to further their own ends. Cuckoo stole info about their conspiracy and is meeting Cyril here to throw off any pursuit, but Cuckoo tells them he’s aware that Godiva is coming to kill him. The compound is evacuated, but Franklin secretly stays behind, telling Danny he doesn’t want to miss out on the fun. Godiva uses her mind-control abilities to get into the compound’s control room and uses its own defenses (mainly some robot attack dogs) in concert with her own men’s assault. The Titans (and Cuckoo) are taken down and captured by the mechanical dogs and various booby traps and Godiva retrieves the stolen data. She’s preparing to kill Cuckoo when Danny and his grandpa bust in to free the Titans, who pound Godiva’s men. Godiva takes off with Cuckoo, dropping him to his death and blowing up some stuff to cover her escape. She gets away, but Danny used his telekinesis to grab the data tape, so it’s not a total loss. That’s Cornelius’s thinking too, since he figures knowing about his plans won’t help the British stop them. Danny says goodbye to his grandpa (who’s heading back to England with Cyril) and the Titans wish the agents luck.
Suicide Squad #14 – “Slipping Into Darkness” – John Ostrander/Luke McDonnell
This one starts with Amanda Waller meeting with President Reagan, but she’s surprised o find a couple of others there … Senator Cray and Agent Tolliver. Tolliver has threatened to go public about the Squad if they don’t help get Cray (who’s crooked as hell) re-elected. Reagan orders Waller to help, not wanting his legacy tainted b scandal (although this was after Iran-Contra, wasn’t it?) and Waller reluctantly agrees, since refusing would mean she’d be replaced by Tolliver. In Russia, the KGB comes to the JLI Embassy to look for Nemesis, who was taken there after being released from prison last issue. They don’t find him anywhere and it turns out he’s already on the way home, in the guise of a black marketeer named Toozenbach, who’s being held at the Embassy long enough for Nemesis to get away. At Belle Rêve, Nightshade and Bronze Tiger are worried that Waller will be mad over their unsanctioned mission in Russia, but when she returns she’s acting like a broken woman, even agreeing to let Nightshade go on the personal mission she’s been asking for since she joined. Bronze Tiger tries to talk to Waller, but she won’t open up and he warns her about keeping things bottled up. Nightshade and Bronze Tiger start making a list of team members for her mission: Vixen, Duchess, June Moon, and Deadshot, who’s in therapy session with Marnie (who he’s hot for). They talk about his ex-wife and kid, but he ends up walking out of the session. Captain Boomerang doesn’t want to join the mission, so Bronze Tiger takes him out and gets him drunk, hauling him along after he passes out. Nightshade’s mission has to do with rescuing her brother from the Dimension of Nightshades, where she got her powers. They head into the dimension and June Moon seems to have a certain familiarity with the place; when stone pillars start erupting from the ground to form a weird temple, June says it’s the work of the Dhazmor, who gave June the power to turn into Enchantress. Obviously there’s some connection between Enchantress and Nightshade, but before they can ponder it, the whole team (except Boomerang, who’s still passed out) is trapped by more stone pillars. Turns out Nightshade’s brother is the one who trapped them … yeah, he’s evil now.
