Legion of Super-Heroes #48 – “A Time to Die” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo
This one starts with Duo Damsel informing Brainiac 5 and Saturn Girl that Tellus has uncovered their little conspiracy, although he doesn’t know Duo Damsel is part of it. Brainy mentions that Sensor Girl is aware of what’s happening too, but he’s not bothered by that since he’s completed his new “machine”, which they can test as soon as Mon-El provides a suitable power source. It kinda sounds like Brainy’s building a time machine (the word “tesseract” is mentioned several times) and it seems like they’re motivated by revenge for something, so maybe they’re going after Time Trapper because they blame him for the deaths of Superboy and Supergirl? I’m not sure why Duo Damsel would be in on that plan, although she did have the hots for Superboy before she married Bouncing Boy. Whatever Brainy’s device is, Mon-El is out in space getting the power source for it … a white dwarf star. On Mars, Starfinger wants a way to wipe out the entire Legion at once. His armourer has a weapon that can do it if they can properly target the Legionnaires. Starfinger suggests they obtain a Legion Flight Ring so they can use the unknown metals in the Ring to target all the Legionnaires at once. At Legion headquarters, Sensor Girl tells Magnetic Kid and Tellus she knows about the conspiracy and that they have to do something before someone gets killed. Mon-El returns with the white dwarf, which sets off all the alarms. Starfinger’s minion assigns his newest recruit Reefej (who’s actually Chameleon Boy in disguise) to get a Legion Flight Ring. Cham heads down to Earth alone, knowing he has to present Starfinger with something, but wary of bringing him a real Ring for fear his weapon actually does kill all the Legionnaires … including himself. Cham breaks into Science Police headquarters and uses a duplicator ray to make a fake Flight Ring, giving it just enough impurities that Starfinger’s weapon won’t target the real Rings … or so he hopes. At Legion HQ, Brainy uses the tesseract to drain power from the white dwarf, but the star’s energy is too much and it spills out of the machine, almost destroying the lab. Mon-El takes the star out to get rid of it (with a little help from some other Legionnaires) and Tellus confronts Brainy with his knowledge of the conspiracy. Brainy and Saturn Girl basically tell the others to mind their own damn business. At Science Police HQ, Cham’s plan is working well, but when he’s discovered and chased by Science Police, Cham is forced to abandon the fake ring and report his failure to Starfinger. Instead of killing him, Starfinger introduces Reefej to the scientist who built the weapon to wipe out the Legion, Dr. Hazeg. Hazeg has teleported a Flight Ring from one of the dead Legionnaires’ tombs, so the plan can go ahead after all. Hazeg looks like a cyborg and is confined to a medi-chair, but Cham is stunned when he realizes “Hazeg” is actually Colossal Boy.
New Teen Titans #45 – “Dial D for Danger” – Marv Wolfman/Eduardo Barreto/Romeo Tanghal
This one starts with a guy being chased through the subways by a pissed-off woman whose body can become water. He addresses her as “Vicki” and says how sorry he is, but that doesn’t seem to calm her down. He runs into the Titans, who try to fight the watery woman until she takes off. Back at headquarters, her erstwhile victim introduces himself as Chris King and his attacker as Vicki Grant, who old-timers like me will remember from the Dial H for Hero back-ups in Adventure Comics. Chris tells the Titans how he and Vicki found the H-Dials and became temporary superheroes, how they were “more than friends” but eventually broke up, and how Chris went to college and put all that stuff behind him. But Vicki showed up just a couple days ago and attacked him, clearly still using her own H-Dial. When Chris went to get his Dial where he’d hidden it, the Dial was gone so he headed to New York hoping the Titans could help him. Obviously, Vicki followed him. Elsewhere, Cyborg is helping Sarah Charles pack for her move to San Francisco. He’s still bitter that she’s going, even though she insists her feelings for him haven’t changed and she wants to make things work. He’s so pissed off that he goes out and punches a bus. Meanwhile, Vicki Grant is hearing a voice inside her head telling her to find Chris and take out her pain on him. If you read between the lines, it kinda sounds like she and Chris banged when they were teenagers and when they broke up, she had a lot of resentment because she thought he was the love of her life. Now someone—or something—is feeding that resentment, pushing her to go after Chris. She finally agrees and dials H-E-R-O backwards on her Dial, turning her body into diamond. She goes on a rampage, which attracts Cyborg’s attention, but she kicks his ass and heads for Titans’ Tower. Vicki busts in to get Chris and the Titans fight her, but her diamond body makes her basically invulnerable. Raven takes her to the Netherworld, but whoever turned Vicki evil has the power to teleport her back. She pounds the Titans and grabs Chris, saying she no longer wants him dead, she’s taking him to her masters … the Children of the Sun. Sounds like a cult to me, but we’ll see next issue.
Suicide Squad #15 – “Devil to Pay” – John Ostrander/Luke McDonnell/Bob Lewis
Last issue, Nightshade led a team (Bronze Tiger, Enchantress, Deadshot, Vixen, Duchess, and Captain Boomerang) into the Nightshade Dimension that feeds her powers to look for her brother, who’s been missing for years. They found him, but it turns out he’s evil now and calls himself the Incubus. Nightshade points out that the Incubus already existed when she and her brother first came to this dimension, so Incubus goes into a long backstory. He explains how their Aunt Beah had the Incubus inside her and passed it on to him (with a rather salacious kiss) when he was first brought to the Nightmare Dimension. He mentions Azhmodeus, a demon lord who wants to rule the Nightshade Dimension, but needs Incubus to mate with Nightshade (his sister!) to bring him back from where he was exiled. June Moon gets tired of Incubus’s rant and changes into Enchantress, busting loose from her stone restraints. She refuses to free her teammates, but isn’t strong enough to defeat Incubus herself. He pulls the essence of Enchantress out of June, telling everyone it’s his “sister” Succubus. He explains how Azhmodeus sent his two “children” the Incubus and the Succubus to the Nightshade Dimension to pave the way for his return. Two women were taken from Earth, Beah and Rhea; Incubus took over Beah’s soul and Succubus was supposed to get Rhea, but she fled to Earth’s dimension with help from the Dhazmor, a guardian meant to stop Azhmodeus from returning (and the being that supposedly gave Enchantress her powers). Turns out Nightshade’s mom was brought to the Nightshade Dimension, but ended up dead and Nightshade escaped back to Earth before Succubus could take her over. The Dhazmor sent Succubus to Earth, binding her to June Moon in hopes that she’d be forced to do good, but Succubus’s evil nature kept asserting itself, which explains Enchantress’s dual nature. Incubus managed to get rid of the Dhazmor and now that Nightshade is here, he wants to put Succubus in her body and bang her so their child can serve as a host body for Azhmodeus. Duchess gets tired of Incubus’s bullshit and busts loose, but is attacked by a three-headed dog. She frees the others, but Vixen is immediately controlled by Incubus (who has power over anyone with a bestial nature) and attacks Bronze Tiger. Boomerang is useless since he’s still hung over from Bronze Tiger getting him drunk enough to drag him along on the mission. Nightshade is pinned by rock restraints and Incubus (who’s inside her brother’s body remember) gets ready to bang her. I’m not sure if they actually fuck or not, but Succubus does end up inside Nightshade’s body. Unfortunately for Incubus, his sister is just as evil as he is and attacks him. They start fighting and the very fabric of the dimension begins to unravel. Deadshot shoots Incubus and the dimension turns into a vortex, pulling most of the Squad (except Nightshade, I’m not sure what happened to her) into it.
