This one starts with Diana, Julia, and Vanessa returning from Myndi Mayer’s funeral. They’re all affected by her death, Diana most of all. She feels guilty, wondering if she lost sight of her mission by getting caught up in the hype around her Wonder Woman identity. She gets a message from Themiscyra asking her to return at once so she takes off, promising Vanessa she’ll be back as soon as she can. In Olympus, Hermes watches Diana, feeling a bit guilty himself for everything the gods have put her through. Aphrodite thinks Hermes mightAmazons find Olympus destroyed be feeling something else towards Diana, but he won’t admit it. On Themiscyra, all the Amazons are summoned by the oracle Menalippe, who tells them she had a dream instructing her to bring Hippolyte and Diana to the sacred altar so the three of them could be transported to Olympus. The Amazons pray together and the three women are taken to Olympus, but are shocked to find it in ruins. The gods show up to explain things to the Amazon trio. They’re planning to move Olympus to a new location, which means they the gods arrivehave to destroy what’s left of this Olympus … and for that they need Diana’s help. Hermes is pissed off that the gods are asking Diana for help after abandoning her to Circe (and Diana finds out it was Hermes who saved her from the sorceress), but Diana agrees to do whatever she can to help. The Amazons agree and they collectively pray for the destruction of the old Olympus, so the gods can move on to forge a new Olympus. The Amazons’ prayers combine with the will of the gods to bring a destructive bolt, which Diana has to deflect with her bracelets so it hits the crossed staves of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Despite the terrible destructive force, Diana does as she’s asked andDiana deflects the energy bolt deflects the bolt, causing the destruction of Mount Olympus. Diana, Hippolyte, and Menalippe appear back on Themiscyra and they can feel that the gods have gone to find their destiny elsewhere. The Amazons are freaked out, but Hippolyte says it’s an opportunity for the Amazons to forge their own destiny … and the first thing they need to decide is whether or not to let men set foot on Paradise Island.

 

Firestorm 76 coverFirestorm #76 – “Heart of Fire” – John Ostrander/Joe Brozowski/Sam De La Rosa

This one starts with an underground nuclear test going wrong by recreating Brimstone, the destructive monster sent by Darkseid to ravage Earth during the Legends crossover. Brimstone bursts out of the desert sands and starts rampaging, hoping to gain Darkseid’s favour. In Pittsburgh, Emily Rice (Dean of Vandermeer University) is talking to Senator Reilly about Martin Stein being found alive. Emily’s not too keen on spending money to help Martin, even though he was once a member of the faculty. Reilly convinces her that studying Martin might helpSenator Reilly talks to Dean Rice with the university’s meta-human research, since Martin’s brain tumour was cured by a nuclear blast that left him alive and otherwise undamaged (except for his amnesia). Reilly also arranges for Ronnie to accompany Martin as his therapist and Emily agrees. Ronnie is ecstatic and finds out that Lorraine (Senator Reilly’s daughter, who also happens to be Firehawk) is going to be attending Vandermeer too. In Nevada, Martin’s health care facility is menaced by Brimstone and he goes catatonic, summoning Ronnie and Mikhail to form Firestorm. Back in Washington, Lorraine sees Brimstone’s Brimstone ignores the stormattack on TV and figures she knows how to defeat him, so she changes to Firehawk and takes off. She knows she doesn’t have the speed to get there in time, so she flies up above the atmosphere to let the Earth spin below her as a shortcut to Nevada …hoping she won’t freeze or suffocate before she can get back down to Earth. In Nevada, Firestorm tries to use the water from Hoover Dam to douse Brimstone, but he burns it all away and isn’t affected when Firestorm turns the steam into a rainstorm. Brimstone starts to breach the dam when Firehawk plummets down into the reservoir. She tells them brimstone has a “heart”, a device in his chest that might be vulnerable to a laser beam.Firestorm gets the device But Darkseid has improved Brimstone since his last defeat and the device is invulnerable to Firestorm’s laser. He realizes he’ll have to fly inside Brimstone and become solid long enough to grab the device and pull it from Brimstone’s body. Brimstone’s insides are hotter than the sun, but Firestorm manages to get the device and fly it into space where he hurls it away. Brimstone vanishes and Firestorm fixes the dam before thanking Firehawk for her help … by making out with her.
