Justice League International #23 – “Gross Injustice” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Joe Rubinstein
This story takes place in the aftermath of the alien Invasion crossover. The JLI are still on the small Pacific island where they fought the Khunds last issue and are arguing about what to do with the crashed Khund ship. Mr. Miracle is worried about booby traps (or worse), but Guy gets impatient and picks the ship up with his ring’s force beam. Unfortunately, the crashed ship’s structural integrity isn’t what it should be and the ship falls apart. On a nearby island, a group of villains (and their friend Bruce) have found a downed Thanagarian ship and are trying to figure out how it works. These particular villains aren’t exactly world-beaters: we have Major Disaster (whose name pretty much describes his criminal career); Big Sir (who was stupid, then smart, then stupid again); Cluemaster (Batman’s most gimmick-based villain, which is saying something); Clock King (who has a clock for a face); and Multi-Man (who’s just plain goofy). The villains spend most of the time arguing and resenting Major Disaster’s leadership, but Cluemaster thinks he notices some activity on a nearby island. Coincidentally, Fire (who is on that nearby island) thinks she sees activity on the other island, but figures she’s probably wrong. The villains manage to get the Thanagarian ship going and Major Disaster starts ranting about his big plans (and christens the group the Injustice League). Mr. Miracle gets some circuits working in the crashed Khund ship and thy overhear Disaster’s rant. Guy flies off to attack the villains, smashing his way right through their ship. Bruce panics and accidentally sends the ship up into the stratosphere. Guy follows and smashes another hole in the hull, causing the ship to plummet back to Earth. J’onn flies up to catch the crippled ship (giving Guy another opportunity to smash a hole in it) and lowers it to safety. The Injustice League are arrested and taken away by the army and the rest of the team gets tired of Major Disaster’s pontificating and beats the shit out of him. Mr. Miracle and Guy go through the Khund ship’s wreckage and Guy breaks something during a tantrum. The sky suddenly turns black and everyone assumes Guy set off a booby trap, but it’s actually the Gene Bomb brought to Earth by the aliens.
Legion of Super-Heroes #56 – “By Hope Ensnared” – Paul Levitz/Eduardo Barreto/Mike DeCarlo, Al Gordon
This one starts with Blok freaking out, trying to bust out of the dark prison he’s confined in. Blok was tricked by a small alien who promised to reveal info about other silicon-based lifeforms. Instead, he’s been kept in a strange nexus-prison by his kidnapper and the guy the kidnapper works for, another alien (the Inquisitor) who’s interested in immortality and thinks he can learn something from Blok, since silicon lifeforms live longer than carbon-based people. Elsewhere, a contingent of Legionnaires (Dawnstar, Wildfire, Element Lad, and Ultra Boy) are tracking Emerald Empress after her escape from Labyrinth last issue. They find an emerald palace above a remote planet and are attacked by green cloud-monsters. They repel the monsters and realize they were probably worshipping (or enslaved by) Emerald Empress, but she’s not there anymore. Dawnstar is too tired from the fight to resume tracking her, so they report their failure to Lightning Lass back at headquarters. Lightning Lass outs the moves on Magnetic Kid again and again he’s either too scared or too oblivious to do anything about it. Lightning Lass runs into Shrinking Violet, who isn’t shy about reminding her who her “friends” are. I assume this is an oblique reference to Lightning Lass and Violet hooking up, which has kinda been hinted at in earlier issues; maybe Lightning Lass was freaked out by it and threw herself at Magnetic Kid to convince herself she was straight, but it definitely looks like she’s still interested in Violet. Meanwhile, Shadow Lass is still searching for a way to heal the injuries Mon-El got fighting Time Trapper, but it’s hard to heal a body that’s invulnerable. They go to Verzwei, a planet with a reputation for curing all manner of diseases, but when Mon-El is pulled into a space warp Shadow Lass realizes it’s a trap. She follows him through the warp and they end up in one of the Inquisitor’s dark cells. The Inquisitor isn’t sure if Mon-El’s stubborn will to live will help with the immortality stuff, but he’s willing to take a chance. On Earth, President Desai tells Science Police Chief Zendak he’s being reassigned to the Outer Rim and a new Chief will be taking over (though we don’t hear who it is yet). On the Inquisitor’s ship, Blok breaks out of his cell and ends up in the one holding Shadow Lass and Mon-El, who’s being tortured with bright lights that even Shady’s powers can’t hold back. Blok pounds on the cell walls and—with a little help from Mon-El’s heat vision—breaks through to the control room. The Inquisitor flees through a warp, leaving his servant behind. Blok forces him to open two more warps, one to Verzwei (where Shadow Lass hopes they can find a legitimate doctor to help Mon-El), and one back to Earth. Blok sees Shady and Mon-El arrive safely on the monitors, but isn’t sure if he can trust the alien who kidnapped him to return him to Earth. So, he tosses the alien through the warp first and when he sees him land safely at Legion HQ, soon follows.
New Titans #52 – “Trackdown” – Marv Wolfman/George Perez/Bob Mc/Leod
This one starts with Danny Chase at Titans’ headquarters trying to find some back-up members to deal with the alien Invasion. The only one he can get in touch with is Speedy, who’s too busy to talk for long. The regular Titans team headed into space last issue to follow up on the latest (in a long string of) revelations on Donna (Wonder Girl) Troy’s origin. Apparently, she was taken from Earth just before she was about to die, raised on another planet (New Chronus) by the Greek Titans, then returned to Earth (without her memory) to do good and serve as an example to humanity … or something. When one of the Greek Titans showed up to tell Donna that they were being attacked by another of their “Seeds” (named Sparta), she decided to head for space to help them, rounding up as many of the other Seeds as possible to help. The Titans got separated last issue and Nightwing, Starfire, Jericho, and Cyborg ended up on a planet where they were quickly surrounded by armoured alien warriors. The leader Athyns (who’s obviously the Seed they’re looking for) doesn’t believe they’re there to get his help, so he orders them killed. When Sparta’s alien troops show up to grab Athyns, he orders his men to kill them too. Jericho takes over Athyns’s body and forces him into the pod they came in, but the fight between Sparta’s troops and Athyns’s soldiers gets out of hand and the whole planet blows up. They knock Athyns out to shut him up and head for New Chronus. Meanwhile, Donna, Raven, Changeling, and another Seed named Xanthi (who they met last issue) approach New Chronus and are attacked by Sparta’s forces. (Sparta operates from a planet near New Chronus, a planet she took over by slaughtering the population.) Working together, Donna and Xanthi figure out how to control the pod they’re travelling in, activating its defenses long enough to get inside the force-field around New Chronus. Sparta is pissed off that her men failed to stop two of the Seeds from returning home, but realizes another is on the way and resolves to destroy that one. New Chronus is in ruins and the Greek Titans have become old and frail, but Mnemosyne returns Donna and Xanthi’s memories and they now recall growing up in a paradise where they were taught by the Titans. On the other pod, Nightwing worries about Starfire’s reaction to the destruction off the planet, and Starfire worries about him always having the burden of leadership on his shoulders. Cyborg and Jericho watch over Athyns, who’s been tied into the pod’s circuitry. They’re worried he might be able to mentally command the pod, but haven’t noticed that he’s awake and listening to them. On New Chronus, Donna and Xanthi enjoy the newly awakened memories and are glad to hear the other pod is approaching. But Sparta and her forces attack and Athyns takes over the pod from inside, blasting the Titans and fighting back against Sparta’s ships. Sparta thinks having the three remaining Seeds will give her ultimate power, but she still can’t penetrate the force-field around New Chronus. Starfire gets pissed off and starts pounding Athyns and Donna wonders if Raven can teleport with her onto the pod. Raven isn’t willing to risk Donna’s life, so she goes alone and arrives just in time to get blasted by Athyns. Nightwing jumps Athyns as Sparta’s forces continue blasting the pod, finally blowing it up before Donna’s horrified eyes.
