Wonder Woman #31 – “The Savage Moon” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Will Blyberg
This one starts with Boston police detectives Eddie Indelicato and Michael Shands uncovering some info on a series of savage murders that seem to connect to Barbara Minerva. They’re aware that Wonder Woman went to England to find Minerva and wish they could warn her to be careful. But the detectives are a little behind … Wonder Woman has tracked Minerva to Egypt to get back the magic lasso Minerva took from her, but Minerva stole a sacred relic from a tribe of Amazons in the hidden city of Bana-Mighdal. The Amazons thought Wonder Woman was responsible and imprisoned her, but she broke free. Meanwhile, Minerva’s health has been getting worse and even the potion made from the plant-god Uzkartaga isn’t sustaining her like it used to, even as the Cheetah. The Amazons attack the desert town of Syene Kesh, where Minerva is hiding, slaughtering the populace indiscriminately to find her. Chuma kills some of the Amazons with arrows and poison gas and tells Cheetah she has to renew her vows to Uzkartaga to regain her health. The Amazon Queen (Anahid) decides to go after Minerva herself, leaving other Amazons to complete the destruction of the village. Wonder Woman shows up to stop them, though she makes sure not to kill them. After renewing the ritual with Uzkartaga, Cheetah has become stronger and more bestial than ever and starts wasting Amazons. Wonder Woman knows how dangerous she is, but has to fight her way through more Amazons to get to her. Cheetah is about to kill Anahid when Wonder Woman intervenes. She and Cheetah start fighting and Anahid forbids the Amazons to interfere right before she dies. Wonder Woman gets the upper hand, but Chuma shoots her with a poison dart to help his mistress. The Amazons shoot Chuma down and keep Cheetah back long enough for Wonder Woman to suck the poison out of her own leg and resume the fight. The battle turns savage and Wonder Woman gets a little intense, ripping Cheetah’s tail off and beating the shit out of her. Before dying, Chuma asks Wonder Woman to spare Cheetah and tells her he threw the stolen artifacts into a rubbish heap. Wonder Woman finds her lasso and the Amazons’ stolen treasure, which turns out to be a Golden Girdle of Gaea, just like the one her branch of Amazons used to have.
Firestorm #86 – “Home Fires Burning” – John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake
This is Part 7 of the Janus Directive crossover, although the actual interaction is minimal. It starts with the new version of Firestorm (who’s just taken his true form as a Fire Elemental) arriving in Pittsburgh and getting pissed off at all the pollution. He goes to a steel plant (Vandermeer Steel) and tells the CEO (Finch) that he’s shutting it down. Firestorm totals the plant and Finch decides to call a meeting with other CEOs and to get working on a protocol known as the Captains of Industry. At Vandermeer University, Dr. Lagrieve is studying Parasite, who’s losing his mind because of all the different memories and personalities he’s absorbed. After a weird argument between two doctors about “nature vs nurture” in determining the behaviour of supervillains, Lagrieve checks with Dr. Morrison to see how his research on Killer Frost is coming. Morrison is evasive and argumentative and Lagrieve figures he’s hiding something. Nearby, Lorraine (Firehawk) Reilly visits Martin Stein to see if he knows where Ronnie is. They see a news bulletin about Firestorm destroying the steel plant and Stein is freaked out, though he doesn’t know why (since he can’t recall being part of Firestorm). Lorraine becomes Firehawk and goes to look for Firestorm. At Vandermeer University, Parasite tricks someone into entering his cell so he can absorb their strength and bust out. Lagrieve calls Belle Rêve for help, but Flo tells him they’re under attack. Firestorm tells Firehawk about his new form and that Ronnie Raymond technically doesn’t exist anymore. Firehawk isn’t happy and despite his supposedly emotionless state, Firestorm does seem to care about her feelings. Firehawk gets back to Vandermeer in time to tackle Parasite, but he drains her power and she barely escapes (revealing her secret identity to Lagrieve in the process). Firestorm confronts Parasite, who’s shocked to learn he can’t absorb Firestorm’s power (since it comes from the Earth itself). Parasite tries to burn Firestorm, but ends up almost consuming himself. Firestorm spares him when Lorraine and Lagrieve ask him to, but Parasite’s in rough shape. Lagrieve asks Firestorm to go to Belle Rêve to help fight off the attackers and Firestorm reluctantly agrees (which is why he shows up there in Suicide Squad 29).
