Wonder Woman #32 – “Meanwhile” – George Perez/Tom Grummett/Steve Montano
As the title indicates, this issue deals with events going on while Diana is chasing down Cheetah to recover her stolen lasso and fighting renegade Amazons in Egypt. It starts in Themiscyra, where Hippolyte leads some other Amazons (including Penelope and Menalippe) on a sacred hunt, where the quarry serves as a sacrifice to Artemis. Hippolyte recalls the first time Diana participated in such a hunt. Diana missed the deer on purpose, which pissed Hippolyte off. She sent Diana to kill the deer, but she found it already wounded by a boar. Diana got mad and chased down the boar, but her mother told her that Artemis had sent the boar to do what Diana should have done. Artemis had selected the deer as her sacrifice, so by refusing to kill it (and leaving it to a slow death while chasing the boar), Diana was insulting the Goddess of the Hunt. Diana went back to kill the deer properly, hoping Artemis would forgive her. In the present, Hippolyte an the others find Artemis’s chosen sacrifice—a boar—and Menalippe takes aim. At Harvard, Julia Kapatelis gets a visit from Detectives Indelicato and Shands, who ask her about Barbara Minerva and Cheetah. While telling them everything she knows about the two, Julia comes to the same conclusion as the detectives … that Minerva is the Cheetah. Julia’s first thought is to warn Diana, but she has no idea where to find her. At Hanscom Air Force Base, Etta tells Steve that General Hilary has been transferred and his replacement is a general named George Yedziniak, who has some history with Steve and Etta. Apparently, they uncovered evidence of something shady ten years ago and got three of Yedziniak’s friends kicked out of the service (or something like that). Yedziniak hasn’t forgotten and plans to make their lives hell. Steve is so thrown by Etta’s news that he doesn’t get around to telling her that Hermes has talked Steve into taking him in as a roommate, so he can learn about humanity firsthand. Elsewhere, Hermes prepares to dismantle the temple he raised to himself so he can reclaim some of his godly might. But when he tries to reabsorb the energy, it causes intense pain and almost knocks him out. As Hermes rises from the rubble, still in pain, Menalippe falls off her horse in Themiscyra and becomes feverish. Both she and Hermes are in incredible pain, and both shout out a name at the same time … Gaea. In Boston, Julia gets a phone call that she thinks is from Diana, until the person she’s speaking to mispronounces the name Gaea. Halfway across the world, we see what looks like a couple of Bana-Mighdal Amazons hang up the phone and tear a photo of Diana and Julia in two.
Firestorm #87 – “Freakstorm” – John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake
This one starts with Firestorm dropping off the people he brought back from Kobra’s Ark after the end of the Janus Directive crossover. Sarge Steel orders everyone to keep quiet about what happened, but Firestorm declares that he’s now a force of nature and will talk about whatever he likes. After Firestorm leaves, Captain Atom points out that this new version may be much more dangerous than previous ones. At Vandermeer University in Pittsburgh, Dean Rice is talking to Simon Lagrieve about the recent trouble with Parasite and Killer Frost. The bad publicity from their escapes has the public worried and could affect enrolment, but Lagrieve doesn’t want to send Killer Frost back to Belle Rêve because he thinks he’s close to figuring out her powers. Rice mentions that Vandermeer Steel (who partially fund the university) are looking for a corporate superhero and points out that since Lagrieve knows who Firehawk is (after seeing her transform during the fight against Parasite), he could ask her if she wants to come to the university for study. Meanwhile, Firehawk (aka Lorraine Reilly) gets a call from Ed Raymond asking her about Ronnie. She tells him about Firestorm’s new status, with Ronnie still inside somewhere but not really a separate person anymore, which doesn’t exactly ease Ed’s mind. At Vandermeer Steel, the CEO (J. H. Finch) has been trying to get other business owners to organize (into the so-called Captains of Industry) to fight against superheroes disrupting their businesses, but none of them are interested. Finch has an ace up his sleeve … Typhoon, who he’s hired to protect the plant if Firestorm shows up to trash it again. Firestorm does show up and Typhoon attacks, but their fight does more damage to the factory than Finch anticipated. The fight spills out into the city, trashing buildings all over the place. Lagrieve is at Lorraine’s place, trying to talk her into coming to the university, but when they see the fight in progress, Lorraine turns into Firehawk to go stop it. She distracts Typhoon and Firestorm takes him down, then returns to destroy Vandermeer Steel completely. But Firehawk won’t let him, pointing out the damage his reckless fight has already done to the city. Firestorm threatens to kill her, but Firehawk doesn’t back down, so he leaves. She realizes whatever’s left of Ronnie is diminishing rapidly, so if she gets in his way again, Firestorm will probably kill her. Finch thanks her for defending his factory, but she suspects Typhoon was working for him and flies away after giving him shit. Finch tells his henchman that he wants to know everything about Firehawk so he can pressure her into working for them.
