Wonder Woman #35 – “Journey’s End” – George Perez/Chris Marrinan/Steve Montano
Last issue, Wonder Woman was attacked by Shim’tar, who considers herself the new queen of the Amazons in Bana-Mighdal (an ancient city hidden inside a mystical sandstorm in the Egyptian desert). A faction led by the rebellious Amazon Faruka wants the Amazons to reclaim their glory and make war against the outside world instead of hiding from it. Shim’tar and Diana had a huge fight and ended up buried in rubble, while a bellicose general sent a fighter squadron into the sandstorm to blast Bana-Mighdal off the map … despite Steve and Julia’s pleas to spare the city for Diana’s sake. As the jets approach, Faruka searches the rubble for Shim’tar, who bursts free, still going after Diana. Diana tries to stop the planes, but Shim’tar blasts her in the back. As Shim’tar prepares to kill her, Diana mentions that she was trying to save the city and now Shim’tar’s actions have doomed them all. That gets the attention of the other Amazons, but Faruka tries to tell them that Diana was lying. Her words are proved false when Hermes erects a force-field to protect the city. The Amazons realize Diana really was trying to help, but Faruka shoots Hermes, which leads Batiri and some other Amazons to kill Faruka. Hermes tells Diana to ensnare Shim’tar with her lasso and grab his caduceus. That causes a mystical energy storm that builds, threatening to wipe out the city. Batiri gives Cheetah to Hermes, saying it’s the Amazons’ fate to die here but they want no outsider deaths on their heads. Hermes extends a force-field around himself, Diana, and Cheetah just before the city explodes. When Diana recovers, she finds the Bana-Mighdal Amazons’ sacred relic (the Golden Girdle of Gaea) at the end of her lasso. That’s obviously where Shim’tar got her godlike power from, but Diana wonders who Shim’tar was under her mask, to be able to control power like that. Unfortunately, we don’t get an answer to that question because Steve and Julia arrive, thrilled to find Diana still alive. A few days later, we get another happy reunion when Diana and Julia return to Boston to be greeted by Vanessa … and police inspectors Indelicato and Shands, who helped Julia figure out what Cheetah was up to. Etta’s happy to have Steve back, but when she finds out he’s taken Hermes in as a roommate, she suggests that she and Steve take a break from their relationship. Meanwhile, Cheetah is slowly dying, so the authorities decide to stick her in Arkham Asylum to await the end. Diana says farewell to Julia and Vanessa and heads back to Themiscyra to give her mother the Golden Girdle.
Firestorm #90 – “Force of Nature” – John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake
This one starts with a radical environmentalist named Mai Miyazaki haranguing some guys on an oil-drilling rig in the Northern Pacific. The guys are already leaving the platform because of an accident on board, but they get tired of Miyazaki’s diatribe and fire a flare gun at her, setting her boat on fire. She falls in the water, but instead of drowning she’s touched by the spirit of the ocean and transformed into a water elemental called Naiad. She kills the guys who tried to waste her and destroys the drilling platform, but that causes an oil fire on the ocean’s surface, which is very painful to the newly-formed elemental. Elsewhere, Firestorm appears out of a campfire to ask Rasputin some questions about his new life as a fire elemental. Firestorm wonders why he can’t bring himself to wipe out humanity to save the planet and Rasputin points out that fire elementals have existed for millennia on Earth. Some people considered them benevolent (like Prometheus) while others thought them to be forces of destruction (like Surtur). Rasputin reminds Firestorm that he’s partially made up of two humans, Ronnie Raymond and Mikhail Arkadin. That humanity is supposed to balance the raw elemental side, but Firestorm wonders if Ronnie and Mikhail are truly gone, or if they can somehow come back. Rasputin asks if he wants them back, but Firestorm can’t answer and flies off in a rage. He goes to New York and sees Felicity and Ed (Ronnie’s step-mom and father). Ed freaks out, saying he wants his son back, which makes Firestorm mad and he takes off. He goes to Moscow to see Mikhail’s family, who are happy to see him. Mikhail’s wife says he’ll always have a place with them, no matter what. Firestorm goes off to ponder which path he should take and happens on a huge forest fire. He extinguishes the fire by absorbing it, which makes all the firefighters cheer him. Firestorm hears about the oil-rig fire and goes to investigate, but he’s attacked by Naiad (who understandably hates fire). Meanwhile, Swamp Thing has showed up in Ogaden to check out the mutated landscape that came from the jungle Firestorm created there. Swampy is pissed of about the Green being disrupted and vows to make someone pay.
