Batman #447 – “Earth Day! Demon Night” – Marv Wolfman/Jim Aparo/Mike Decarlo
Last issue Batman confronted NKVDemon, a rogue Russian super-agent who’s killing off various government people he thinks are responsible for weakening the Soviet Union since the beginning of glasnost. Batman and NKVDemon were fighting on a high catwalk and Batman was wounded and knocked off. He saves himself with his cape, but NKVDemon successfully kills his target (number seven of ten on his hit list) and escapes. Batman vows to stop the Demon before he kills anyone else, but Nikita Krakov (the Russian cop who’s been helping Batman) warns him that the government doesn’t like having him around, since he isn’t under their control. Batman and Krakov agree that NKVDemon’s final target will be Mikhail Gorbachev, so Krakov starts making plans to protect him. Batman gets back to his hotel just in time to change into Bruce Wayne, as Vicki Vale drops by to say hi (and somehow doesn’t notice the wounds Bruce got in the fight). NKVDemon kills another target at the Bolshoi, and bags his ninth by blowing up a hotel room. Meanwhile, Bruce and Vicki go for a walk and she gives him shit for not caring about the world. Her rant gives him a clue as to what NKVDemon might ty, since tomorrow is Lenin’s birthday, as well as Earth Day. Batman tells Krakov his suspicions and they stake out the square where Gorbachev is to give a speech. NKVDemon uses explosives as a diversion and tries to shoot Gorbachev, but Batman stops him and they fight. Batman is wounded again, but manages to get his hands on Demon’s pistol. He can’t bring himself to kill, but Krakov and his men aren’t so conflicted and they shoot NKVDemon (whose body seems to dissolve afterwards). The next day, Bruce Wayne tells his chaperone Anna that he’s investing in a local business and gives her all the credit for the deal. As Bruce drives off, ewe see Krakov watching from around the corner; I’m not sure if we’re meant to infer that knows Bruce is Batman or not.
Detective #614 – “Street Demonz” – Alan Grant/Norm Breyfogle/Steve Mitchell
This one starts with Batman watching some kids steal a couple of satellite dishes. He follows them to the hideout of a gang called the Demonz, where the kids try to sell the stolen stuff. The Demonz leader (Brute) suggests they sell some crack to make a little extra money. That’s when Batman busts in and pounds the Demonz, but the kids get away. Batman finds them near the school the next day and warns them the Demonz will come after them, thinking they snitched to Batman. But the kids worship the Demonz (and want to join them), so they refuse to believe Batman. The school principal laments the dead end lives of the kids, but doesn’t know what to do. Batman remembers coming to Crime Alley as a kid and getting pounded by the Demonz and rescued by a neighbourhood lady. He follows the kids to the hideout where the Demonz are waiting to pound them, but Batman takes down the leader and scares the others of, impressing the kids. The next day, Bruce Wayne goes to the school and offers to pay the college tuition of anyone who graduates.
Legends of the Dark Knight #7 – “The Death Ship” – Grant Morrison/Klaus Janson
Last issue, some of Gotham’s mob bosses found themselves being stalked and killed by Mr. Whisper, a child murderer (who casts no shadow) who the mobsters thought they killed twenty years ago. One of the bosses (Ottavio) had a special Bat-Signal made to get Batman’s attention. It works, but Batman is pissed off that they’re perverting his symbol for their own ends. Ottavio asks Batman to stop Mr. Whisper, proposing a “crime amnesty” for the duration. But Batman reminds them that they’re the ones who turned Gotham into a crime-ridden hellscape, so now they have to deal with the consequences. We see the girl from last issue hanging around the newly-restored cathedral. She claims to be a nun, but the caretaker throws her out anyway and we see him talking to a man named Wicker, who I think is meant to be Mr. Whisper. Bruce has another weird dream about being a kid at school and about his father trying to tell him something (“Unlock the rose.”) He tells Alfred about his days at private school (which he hated), and about the schools headmaster, Mr. Winchester. Winchester apparently killed Bruce’s friend Robert and while he was caning Bruce, he noticed Winchester didn’t have a shadow … just like the mobsters said about Mr. Whisper. Whisper shows up at Ottavio’s place despite all his security, but Batman busts in to fight him. Whisper is stronger than he looks (not to mention bulletproof) and knocks Batman around a bit. When Batman calls him “Winchester”, Whisper shows a glimmer of recognition before jumping off the balcony and plummeting to the street. He gets up and leaves and Batman discovers that Whisper’s attack was just for show; he’d already poisoned Ottavio’s wine. But now Batman is certain that Whisper is Winchester.
