New Titans #66 – “Fatal Attraction” – Marv Wolfman, George Perez/Tom Grummett/Al Vey
This one starts with most of the Titans at a dinner party to celebrate Terry Long publishing his mythology paper (finally). Dick is absent (circus business) as are Jericho and Raven … which leads to speculation that they might be on a date together. We see Jericho and Raven and both of them do have romantic assignations—but not with each other. Jericho is with one of the many models that seem to fall for him, while Raven is sucking face with Eric Forrester (the smooth-talking ladies’ man we saw back in issue 48). The next day, Raven goes to see Jericho and tells him she’s in love with Forrester. She goes on about how Forrester is really deep and not as arrogant as he originally seemed, and how he’s awakened all sorts of emotions in her. Raven admits she used to be scared of her feelings but now she’s learning to embrace them. She’s telling Jericho because she figures he won’t as judgmental as the others would about her choice of boyfriend. But Jericho does get a bit worried when Raven tells him Forrester doesn’t want her teammates to know about their relationship. Raven says it’s because Forrester wants to earn their trust, but that sounds like a load of crap to me. They’re interrupted by a bank robbery, which they quickly stop. But when Raven uses her soul-self to make two of the robbers question their life choices, she loses control and ends up blasting them and Jericho. When she tries to heal Jericho, it causes her pain and takes much longer than usual. Raven says it’s because she has a cold, but asks Jericho not to mention anything to the others. Raven goes to see Forrester, who wants to bang her, but she tells him she’s not ready yet. Jericho goes through the Titans’ file on Forrester and finds discrepancies between the file and Sarah Charles’ handwritten casebook. Forrester has some kind of power that affects computers, so it looks like he tampered with his own files to make himself look better. But when they tell Raven, she refuses to even look at Sarah’s casebook and gets mad, telling her teammates to go to hell. The Titans feel bad (since there’s no evidence that Forrester is actually guilty of any crime), but Jericho is still worried, so he goes to an old friend of his mom to have her track down Raven’s mother (Arella). Raven calls Forrester and tells him what happened and he offers to come over, obviously thinking he’s about to get lucky. But Raven won’t be so lucky if she fucks him; as he’s leaving, we see a desiccated corpse in his bed. I’m guessing he’s some kind of incubus who drains the life from people he has sex with, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Legion of Super-Heroes #7 – (No Title) – Tom and Mary Bierbaum/Keith Giffen/Al Gordon
This one starts on Tharn, where one of Mordru’s minions (Vryko) is lamenting that he’s not allowed to kill the Legionnaires that were captured last issue. He decides to torment Rond Vidar (who’s held captive in a different dungeon), but runs into Laurel Gand. Laurel found out about the Legionnaires’ plight last issue and came to help. Vryko is tougher than he looks, but so is Laurel and the two of them engage in a big fight in the dungeons. The other captives (Cham, Jo Nah, Kono, and Furball) find themselves in rather interesting rooms (and outfits, although Kono hates her “19th century prostitute” clothes) and quickly look for away out. The fight between Laurel and Vryko spills into the area and Kono buries Vryko in rubble. He gets pissed off about losing the chance to feed on a Daxamite like Laurel, but decides to make do by feeding on Vidar. Meanwhile, Mysa (White Witch) Nal realizes the Legionnaires came to rescue her and feels guilty about whatever Mordru might put them through. She decides to go help Vidar, but Vryko jumps her, not wanting his fun to be interrupted. The others hear the ruckus and come to help, getting Vidar away from Vryko. He grabs Mysa and prepares to feed off her, but she lets her magic take over and incinerates him, which freaks her ex-teammates out. While all this has been happening, Mordru has been having dinner with Rokk (Cosmic Boy) Krinn and the two of them have been trying to bluff and outmaneuver each other. Since he really isn’t strong enough to take on a revived Legion, Mordru finally agrees to hand over Mysa and Vidar as long as Rokk takes the others and leaves, to which Rokk gladly agrees. Out in space, the ship carrying the reporters and trackers who went to Trom last issue to find Jan (Element Lad) Arrah is now heading to Winath, on Jan’s orders. Later, we see that Mordu kept his word and let everyone go, but he did use his magic to zap them to a remote planet in the middle of nowhere … just to be a dick.
Suicide Squad #41 – “Embers” – John Ostrander, Kim Yale/Geof Isherwood
Last issue, Amanda Waller was freed from prison and given carte blanche to form a new Suicide Squad because the Americans are worried about unrest in Vlatava. This issue starts with Count Vertigo (who’s from Vlatava) leading a rebel army against the invaders, including some members of the Russian meta-human Red Shadows. The rebels are doing pretty well until Stalnoivolk takes Molotov’s name literally and tosses him at Count Vertigo, knocking the Count out of the fight. Stalnoivolk tells Zastrow that he cut off the rebels’ weapons pipeline in Gotham, but mentions that someone set him up to be captured. Meanwhile back in Paris, Vixen is walking the runway in a fashion show when Waller shows up to recruit her. Vixen’s not interested … until Waller mentions that they’re bringing Bronze Tiger in as well. In Puerto Azul (a fictional South American country) Poison Ivy has been making like Evita, using her chemistry (and body) to cozy up to a dictator so she can rob the country blind. But he’s being overthrown, which means he’s no use to her anymore. Batman shows up and threatens to leave her to the tender mercies of the mob outside if she doesn’t agree to join the mission. Waller and Vixen find Bronze Tiger in Ogaden, but he’s regressed back to the savage killer he used to be … or at least he thinks he has. After a brief tussle with Vixen, he agrees to join the mission. In Vlatava, the current dictator (Kaligari) complains to Zastrow that Russia isn’t giving him enough support. Zastrow knows that Kaligari is a schemer and might expose the Red Shadows just to embarrass Gorbachev and get him replaced by a hardliner who’d be willing to send in the military. Zastrow also wonders if Stalnoivolk staged his own trouble in the States, since he’s an old-school hardliner himself. Waller, Vixen, and Bronze Tiger head to the Pacific island where Waller stranded Captain Boomerang (who’s looking a bit like Tom Hanks in Cast Away) and after they demonstrate that his brilliant escape plan would’ve gotten him killed he agrees to join them. In London, Batman finds Ravan in a “church” that’s a front for his Kali killers. Batman forcibly recruits Ravan and blows up the church. Elsewhere, we see the mysterious government dude is still listening in on Sarge Steel’s office, so he knows Waller’s new Squad will be heading for Vlatava soon. So he tells Deadshot to go to Vlatava and kill Waller.
