Justice League America #39 – “Blow Up” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Adam Hughes/Joe Rubinstein
Last issue, Despero returned to Earth to get revenge on the JLA for defeating him, not realizing that the team who beat him no longer exists. He killed Gypsy’s parents and was about to waste her when J’onn J’onzz showed up. They trade a few punches and J’onn knows immediately that he’s in for a hell of a fight. Things get worse for him when Despero uses his mental powers to get inside J’onn’s head, using his memories to recreate his wife’s death on Mars. J’onn tries to counter Despero’s illusions by remembering the love he had for his wife, but seeing her die again is so traumatic that his mind basically shuts down. Despero prepares to kill Gypsy again, but Guy Gardner shows up to stop him. Guy sends Despero flying and struts around bragging about it, until he hears about Despero killing Gypsy’s parents. That makes him want to kick Despero’s ass even more and he goes to find him. The others (Blue Beetle, Fire, Ice, and Mr. Miracle) show up in the shuttle to help and find Guy getting his ass kicked. The fight moves to downtown Manhattan, causing destruction all over the place. Guy and Ice are knocked out, while Fire is changed to human form and saved by Blue Beetle. Despero is ready to kill Beetle when Mr. Miracle shows up in the shuttle to stop him … but Despero blasts the shuttle out of the sky, killing Miracle instantly. Meanwhile, J’onn knows only one thing can stop Despero’s rampage: the complete destruction of the Justice League. So J’onn tells Gypsy he’s going to help Despero achieve that.
Justice League Europe #15 – “Kings of the Dust” – Keith Giffen, Gerard Jones/Bart Sears/Pablo Marcos
This one starts with Silver Sorceress back in her home dimension where the planet has been basically wiped out by a nuclear holocaust. Silver Sorceress wanders through the rubble, reflecting on how a supervillain group (the Extremists) caused all the destruction. Speaking of which, the Extremists are in their headquarters, lamenting the fact that they now rule over a ruined planet with no people on it. They managed to capture a survivor and have been taking turns torturing him, but he expires from their attentions, pissing them off to no end. Their spirits rise when they detect Sorceress’s presence and decide to have some fun with her. Back on Earth, Silver Sorceress’s teammate Blue Jay is at the League’s Moscow Embassy requesting asylum. He tells them about the facility in Siberia where he (and other superhumans) was held and Rosa (the Embassy security chief) goes to call the League, but the bureau chief (Boris Razumihin) isn’t too happy about that; he apparently works with the secret meta-human prison and calls to let them know where Blue Jay is. Rosa calls New York, but everyone’s gone except Kilowog, so she tries Paris. At the Paris Embassy, Rocket Red’s family are settling in and Flash is showing off to the kids (and getting distracted by Power Girl’s new costume). Captain Atom calls a meeting to talk about Rosa’s info and sends Metamorpho to Moscow to check things out. Metamorpho arrives just in time to find Boris and his men have captured Blue Jay. In the other dimension, the Extremists torture Silver Sorceress to find out where Blue Jay is, but she refuses to break. They get the location from her mind and open a portal, hoping to find many more people to torture and kill. They open a portal to the Moscow Embassy and quickly pound Metamorpho and Blue Jay. They find Metamorpho’s signal device and decide to send a message to his teammates. At the Paris Embassy, Captain Atom and Catherine Cobert are getting worried since they haven’t heard from Metamorpho since he left, and they don’t feel any better when Sue tells them all their signals are being jammed. They soon figure out what happened to Metamorpho, as the Extremists send him through the teleporter all beat to shit.
