Wonder Woman 48 coverWonder Woman #48 – “Fang and Claw” – George Perez/Jill Thompson/Romeo Tanghal

Last issue, Diana (aka Wonder Woman) and Donna Long (aka Troia) came to Greece in response to some shared dreams they’d both been having. Diana suspected Circe might have something to do with it and her suspicions seemed to be confirmed when they were attacked by a were-creature (reminiscent of the Bestiamorphs Circe used as pawns before). Donna freezes and Diana refuses to use her lasso because she doesn’t want to kill this creature like the one she faced in New York. Gregori DavalosDiana subdues the creature urges her to waste the beast, but she subdues it instead. It turns out the “creature” is a teenaged boy (Andros) who transforms back to human form when he wakes up. In the New York sewers, we see a young couple (Theo and Anna) digging through the tunnels to uncover a buried artifact of some kind. By their conversation, they’re worried about Circe’s influence on them and they’re definitely were-creatures since they talk about how hard it is to retain their humanity after the “change”. After talking with Gregori, Diana and Donna head Theo's storyfor New York to find Theo, who Diana remembers as the leader of the Bestiamorphs. On Paradise Island, Hippolyte worries about Diana, prepares for her visit to the United Nations, and hopes Menalippe can reconnect with the gods after being used as a pawn by Eris. In New York, Theo (who’s now in the form of a centaur) and Anna (a cat-girl) uncover the remains of a crashed alien spaceship, including skeletons of the alien crew. When Diana and Donna show up, Theo is pissed off, recounting how he risked his life searching out knowledge in Circe’s library, and how he wishes Diana had killed Circe instead of sparing her. By comparing stories, Theo and Diana figure out that Circefighting skeletons gained the ability to turn people into Bestiamorphs (including the Scourge, who the Titans fought) by injecting them with the dead aliens’ blood. After Circe’s defeat, Theo and Anna moved to New York, but they started changing into beasts again and wanted to get the cure that was written in Circe’s notes. Unfortunately, Gregori has deciphered the notes and realized there is no cure, which freaks Theo out when Diana tells him. Anna (controlled by Circe) activates a viewscreen and Circe appears to taunt them just before the whole place starts collapsing. The alien skeletons come to life and attack, giving even Diana and Donna a tough time. Theo is wounded fighting them Cindy talks to Vanessaand Anna shakes off Circe’s influence to help, getting wounded herself. Diana destroys the skeletons with her tiara but it’s too late to save Theo, who turns out to be a horse (something he was apparently unaware of). So … he was a horse that turned centaur and human? Anna was fucking a horse? Yeah, I’m not sure how that all works, but Diana buries him and Anna together and says her farewells to Donna. But Donna and Terry show up at Julia’s place a few years later with Donna’s “stepsister” Cindy. Vanessa has been having a hard time whenever Diana goes away, worrying she might not come back, but Cindy tells her to stop expecting the worst and just hope for the best.

Green Arrow 39 coverGreen Arrow #39 – “Sunday on the Tarmac With George” – MikeGrell/Denys Cowan/Shea Anton Pensa

This one starts with Green Arrow meeting the President (who I guess is meant to be Bush, although it doesn’t really look like him) on Air Force One at the airport. Green Arrow is still pissed off about being set up as a traitor by government agents to stir up trouble in Central America. The President explains the political situation in Panama (which was quite topical at the time, although I feel like we’re getting things filtered through Grell’s own politics) and apologizes to Green Arrow. But the President isn’t doing this out of pure remorse and Green Arrow knows it. He sent a tapeArrow tells President to suck it exonerating him (and indicting the agents responsible) to the TV news and they’re getting ready to run it. The American government can’t afford more bad press, so the President wants Green Arrow to call off the story. Arrow tells the President to kiss his ass and leaves, knowing full well there’ll be a sniper waiting outside. But the President calls off the sniper and puts out a press release of his own, blaming the whole thing on rogue elements in the various agencies, and clearing Green Arrow of any wrongdoing. That preempts the news story and the lead reporter tells Green Arrow the public will probably forgive the Oliver getting ready to leavegovernment, since the President came clean. Unfortunately, they’re not so quick to forgive Oliver Queen; the label of “traitor” is a hard one to get rid of and most of the news outlets air the story with the government’s own spin on it. Oliver talks Dinah into hiring Marianne (the con artist who helped him when he was on the run) at the flower shop and Dinah realizes Oliver is planning to leave. Yeah, it’s time for another spiritual odyssey. How many is that now? I keep losing count.
