Wildcat – Director: Rob Hardy/Writer: James Dale Robinson
This one starts with a flashback to three months ago, focusing on Yolanda Montez. But this isn’t the surly Yolanda that we’ve seen in the past three episodes, the one who’s treated like a pariah by everyone at school. This Yolanda is full of life, running for school president, with a loving family … she has it all. Unfortunately, one of the things she has is Henry King Jr. for a boyfriend, which pisses off Cindy Burman (who’s not just jealous over Henry but also running against Yolanda for school president). Henry cajoles Yolanda into sending him a topless pic and naturally he’s showing it to his friends the next day. Cindy grabs his phone and (I guess?) emails the pic to her own phone. When Yolanda is giving a big campaign speech, Cindy emails the naked photo to literally everyone in school. So now we know why Yolanda has been persona non grata at school lately.
In the present, Courtney is still wondering what to do with the JSA artifacts she “liberated” from their headquarters last episode. Pat doesn’t know she has he artifacts, but warns her against getting anyone else involved in fighting the Injustice Society. At school, Courtney stands up for Yolanda again when Cindy messes with her, but Yolanda tells her she just wants to be left alone. Pat goes to a local scrapyard to get parts for the STRIPE armour and when he returns to the garage, he finds Denise Zarick having trouble with her car. Pat tries to tell her how sorry he is about her son and husband dying, but Denise is in no mood to talk about it. At the Injustice Society’s underground headquarters, Icicle finds Dragon King waiting to pledge his allegiance to the cause. Icicle asks Dragon King to build his “machine” and tells him he can have Wizard’s dead body. At school, Courtney finds Yolanda in the gym taking out her frustrations on the heavy bag. Courtney tells Yolanda she needs her help and invites her to dinner. But Yolanda’s parents are still pissed off at her, so they won’t allow her to go.
The next day, Courtney figures out how to get through to Yolanda: she tells her she’s the one who blew up Henry’s car. Yolanda opens up about how shitty her life has been since the pic was sent and admits she hates Henry. At the garage, Denise stops by to tell Pat she’s leaving town and to warn him that her husband didn’t die of a heart attack and that Blue Valley is dangerous. Courtney brings Yolanda home to show her the Cosmic Staff and her Stargirl costume. Yolanda puts on the Wildcat costume (which she says smells like gym class), but it isn’t exactly flattering on her. When she puts on the cowl though, the costume immediately adjusts to a perfect fit. They look up Wildcat’s powers on Wikipedia and test the claws (by destroying the toaster) and Yolanda’s new heightened agility. They go downtown so Yolanda can jump off a building, but she decides not to go that far yet. Courtney tells her Henry’s dad is a supervillain and Yolanda figures they can check the visitor’s log at the hospital to see if any other Injustice members came to see him. Unfortunately, Yolanda has to sneak into the hospital by climbing the outside wall. It takes her a while to get the hang of it and she’s almost seen by a security guard. Luckily, Beth Chapel is there to see her mom and unwittingly distracts the guard.
Yolanda gets inside and Courtney promises to create a distraction for her. At first, Courtney wants to turn off the power, until Yolanda (and the Staff) reminds her there are people on life-support who would die if she did that. Courtney settles for wrecking the supply room, which does distract the duty nurse long enough for Yolanda to look at the visitor’s log. Meanwhile, Beth is having dinner with her mom, who says Beth should be hanging out with friends instead of her. Yolanda slips into Brainwave’s room and finds Henry there. She considers killing him, but changes her mind and hides until he leaves. She has to stay hidden when Principal Bowin comes in to play her violin for the comatose Brainwave, which doesn’t change his condition at all. Since Bowin’s name wasn’t on the visitor’s log, Courtney and Yolanda wonder if she’s an Injustice Society member visiting Brainwave in secret. As Courtney and Yolanda head up to the roof, Beth sees them and recognizes Yolanda immediately. At Courtney’s place, Yolanda tells her she can’t be Wildcat. Yolanda wants to try getting her life back instead of being someone else, but when she makes a heartfelt appeal to her family to forgive her, they refuse. Luckily, Courtney doesn’t take no for an answer and has left the Wildcat costume in Yolanda’s room. Yolanda puts it on and goes to tell Courtney she’s with her all the way. The next day, Pat is at the scrapyard again when he finds Denise’s Zarick’s car all smashed up and realizes she must’ve had an “accident” on the way out of town.
This is a good episode that gives us some background on Yolanda and shows why she’s the perfect person to be Courtney’s first recruit. The whole sexting thing is pretty intense, although it doesn’t seem like Yolanda knows Cindy is the one who sent the photo to everyone in school. Wouldn’t the sender’s name show up in everyone’s phone, even if she just forwarded it? Of course, it’s still Henry’s fault for showing his friends; if he hadn’t been gloating over the pic with them, Cindy would never have been able to grab his phone and send the pic to herself, or whatever she did to get it. Except for her brother, Yolanda’s family are pretty rigid, not giving her any slack and saying she disgraced them and can’t be forgiven. But I think Yolanda will be able to work off some of her anger as Wildcat, and now that Beth knows about her and Courtney’s secret, she’ll soon be joining the team too. Meanwhile, Denise Zarick’s death confirms for Pat that Blue Valley still isn’t safe. I don’t think he realized William Zarick was the Wizard until he saw Joey’s magic stuff in the car and Denise mentioned that Joey wanted to be like his dad. We get our first look at Dragon King and he’s pretty creepy. He seems to be into some kind of weird science, doing what sounds like genetic research … including on his own daughter.
Noticeable Things:
- Mike mentions having a friend named Jakeem … a name that should be familiar to fans of the JSA comics.
- Dragon King reminds Icicle that Shade betrayed the Injustice Society; we’ll be seeing him in future episodes.
Favourite Quotes:
- “Yeah, I have a lunatic following me around.” Yolanda telling Courtney her major problem.
- “He never should’ve shared them.” Courtney’s logical response when Yolanda blames herself for sending the hot pix to Henry.
- “So I have to wear this sad-ass catsuit while you’re, what, Miss America?” Yolanda commenting on the difference between her outfit and Courtney’s.
