Stargirl Reviews: Season 3, Episode 4

Stargirl opening title season 3Frenemies Chapter 4: The Evidence – Director: Walter Carlos Garcia/Writer: Paula Sevenbergen

This one starts with Cameron looking at some knicknacks at home, where he accidentally freezes and shatters a snow globe with his cold powers. His grandparents aren’t worried about his lack of control, as long as he masters his power in time to make their enemies suffer.

At home, the Staff wakes Courtney up and drags her to Gambler’s trailer, where she finds Sylvester beat to shit. Later, she and Pat wait at the hospitalSylvester in hospital by Sylvester’s bedside while Beth’s mom tells them he was beaten and stabbed with a weapon that matches the one that killed Gambler. Yolanda and Rick talk about the attack on Sylvester and we find out that Yolanda is using her job at the diner as cover for her JSA activities. (Her parents only let her keep the job because her father is unemployed and they need the money.) At the hospital, Sylvester wakes up feeling stupid for getting pounded so easily. Courtney says if he needs the Staff he should ignore their deal and just take it next time. Pat calls in Dr. Beth finds evidenceMid-Nite to check Sylvester over. Whoever the mysterious watcher is (I still think it’s Mr. Bones), he has a camera in Sylvester’s room. Dr. Mid-Nite tells Sylvester he’s healing extra fast and speculates that the Staff imbued him with its energy when he “died” and that’s what resurrected him. So he’s internalized the Staff’s energy enough to heal quickly. The JSA check Gambler’s trailer and find it wiped clean except for one skin cell.

Cameron’s still trying to master his powers and his grandparents tell him he needs to forget about his art so he can concentrate. At home, Sylvester’sPat tries to cheer Sylvester up moping because he got jumped and is wondering if he even deserves to be Starman anymore, so Pat tries to cheer him up. Beth and McNider check the skin cell she found and he recognizes it as consistent with Dragon King. The others think Cindy might be working with her father (who seems to be unkillable) until Courtney tells them what she saw in the Shadowlands, with Cindy being treated more like a science experiment than a daughter. Cindy’s not at school because her keys galorepainful condition is getting worse, despite the elixir she’s been drinking. Mike figures Dragon King might be hiding in the tunnels under the town, so he suggests they get STRIPE and go look. But when he and Jakeem wish for the keys to STRIPE, they get inundated with thousands of keys and can’t figure out which is the right one. At work, Tim eagerly supports Barbara’s latest project, which kinda freaks her out since he was such a dick before. (She doesn’t know Paula scared him into being nice.)

Speaking of Paula, she drops by to thank Barbara for helping her. She even brings a gift, a taxidermy raccoon that Paula stuffed herself. At home, PatCameron reveals his powers and Sylvester are watching The Outlaw Josey Wales when Crusher shows up with a six-pack to make peace. After some initial tension, he ends up watching the movie with them. At school, Cameron tells Courtney he’s quitting art and when she pushes him to reveal why, he finally shows her his powers. She’s not that surprised, which makes him feel better. He tells her his family have the same cold powers and use it to help people. He seems to think his dad was some kind of saint and Courtney can’t correct him without revealing who she is. Sylvester tells Pat Cindy changinghe wants to give up being Starman, but Pat tells him he shouldn’t be so hasty and gives him the costume he made. Later, Yolanda and Rick tell Sylvester their theory about Dragon King hiding in the tunnels and he decides to go with them to check. Courtney urges Cameron to channel his artistic side through his powers and when it works, they end up making out. In the Injustice Society’s old headquarters, we see Cindy’s body is starting to turn reptilian, like her father’s was. That’s probably the source of the skin cell Beth found.

This was a pretty good episode that seems to be piling up evidence againstCrusher aptly named Cindy. If she is turning into her dad’s reptile form, it must be her skin that was found at Gambler’s place. But she could’ve shed that later, when she found Gambler’s body; I still think Cindy is too obvious to be the killer, but it’ll be interesting to see if Courtney will keep believing her, especially if she is becoming like her father. Sylvester’s identity crisis is getting a bit tedious now … I wish he’d either embrace it's the thought that countsbeing Starman or quit. It was good to see Sylvester’s injuries bring home the reality of superheroing to Beth’s mom, who had been caught up in the glamour of it all. I liked the humorous touches too, especially Crusher bonding with the guys over a Clint Eastwood movie, Paula’s “thoughtful” gift to Barbara, and the key avalanche that almost buries Mike and Jakeem.

Favourite Quotes:

  • “If it were me, I wouldn’t have let Sylvester live.” Cindy being honest when Yolanda suggests she might have been the one who attacked Sylvester.
  • “I wonder which key is his?” Jakeem when he and Mike are buried in keys.
  • “Well, I’m glad I could be a bad example.” Sylvester when Pat tells him his fuck-ups have taught the kids what not to do.
