This one starts with Clark, Lana, and Steve Lombard skiing at Mammoth Mountain. Lana has dragged Clark along so she won’t be stuck with Steve, but Clark has to pretend he hates skiing (and any other form of physical activity) to maintain his nerdish persona. Steve “accidentally” pushes Clark down a slope and goes after him, but a low-flying jet causes an avalanche that threatens to bury both men. This one starts with Pied Piper playing a tune by a fountain in downtown Central City. Flash happens by and removes the musical miscreant by carrying him away from the crowd on a waterspout. Piper protests that playing music in public isn’t a crime, and that he’s actually doing the people a service. Piper claims his playing is keeping wild elephants from stampeding through the downtown area. Flash figures he’s nuts, but a herd of elephants does come clomping down the street toward the crowd. This one starts in Siberia, where some Red Army guards are attacked by a furry giant. One of them escapes and gets back to his base babbling about the Abominable Snowman attacking the guard outpost. More soldiers investigate, finding giant tracks and crushed soldiers. They decide to hush it all up, shooting the lone survivor who witnessed the attack. This one starts with a guy running through the alleys of Gotham, followed relentlessly by a dude in a trenchcoat. When the runner is finally cornered, the guy in the trenchcoat grabs him, electrocuting him by touch. Later, Batman identifies the dead guy as Spike Rafferty, a criminal who was scheduled for execution but released not long ago on a legal technicality. 1981 Preview

Well, that’s another year gone by. DC’s comics in 1980 were a bit of a mixed bag. Stuff like Batman, Legion, and JLA had some cool storylines and great art, foreshadowing even better stuff to come. Other comics (Superman especially) seem stuck in the Silver Age, giving us goofy aliens and imaginary stories that don’t mean anything for the characters. Now that Marv Wolfman is writing Action and Green Lantern, and Gerry Conway looks like he’s getting a bit more serious on Wonder Woman and JLA, maybe those titles will get better. The following is my preview for the comics I’ll be reviewing from 1981. As usual, I’ll divide them into the groups they’ll appear in during my reviews, some of which I’ve re-arranged from the 1980 pattern. Continue reading “1981 Preview”
