Justice League 4 coverJustice League #4 – “Winning Hand” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Al Gordon

This one starts with the Justice league discussing how Maxwell Lord breached their security and why he’s trying to foist new members (Dr. Light and Booster Gold) on them. Dr. Light isn’t happy that Lord lied to her about his connection with the league and she walks out. Lord keeps pushing the team to accept Booster, whose pride is hurt when the League aren’t all that keen. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Justice League 4, Infinity Inc. 41, Young All-Stars 3”

Xena title cardWhen in Rome … – Director: John Laing/Writer: Steven L. Sears

In Gaul, a local chief named Vercinix leads his people against the invading Roman legions. Vercinix sends his family away and ends up being captured by Caesar’s troops, which is quite the publicity coup for Caesar since Vercinix has been giving him so much trouble. Some time later in Syria, the Parthians are successfully resisting the Romans under Crassus when Xena shows up. She drags Crassus out of the camp and tells him she’s going to trade him to Caesar in exchange for Vercinix. Continue reading “Xena Reviews: Season 3, Episode 16”

Batman 410 coverBatman #410 – “Two of a Kind” – Max Allan Collins/Dave Cockrum/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with a montage of Bruce (Batman) Wayne training his new Robin, Jason Todd. It’s said to be six months since Bruce met Jason (last issue), but I’m not sure if that means we’re back in the present or not; I assume so, but six months seems too short if all the new Robin’s adventures are still Canon. Batman’s been educating Jason on his Rogues Gallery, with one notable exception—Two-Face. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Batman 410, Detective 577, Outsiders 22”

Wonder Woman 6 coverWonder Woman #6 – “Power Play” – Len Wein/George Perez/Bruce Patterson

Last issue, Ares influenced people in the United States and Russia to prepare for a nuclear war. An American general (Tolliver) actually took over a military base, planning to launch nukes at Russia to kick things off. Wonder Woman, Julia Kapatelis, Steve Trevor, Etta Candy, and Colonel Michaelis made it into the base using the talisman Diana got from Harmonia, but before they could stop Tolliver and his men, Ares showed up in person. Joxer wins some money at a casino and the owner (Titus) sends goons after him to get it back. But two con men (Rafe and Eldon) run into Joxer outside and con him out of the money (and Eldon steals his sword). Xena and Gabi (who has hurt her ankle again) are coming to meet Joxer, but find the goons pounding him. The goons take off but Joxer is almost dead from the beating and Xena vows to make whoever is behind it pay. Continue reading “Xena Reviews: Season 3, Episode 15”

Legion of Super-Heroes 36 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #36 – “Peace, Quiet, and Impending Doom” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo

This one starts with Element Lad resigning as Legion leader, since he feels guilty about becoming Universo’s pawn. The regular election was coming up anyway, so his stepping down doesn’t really cause too much bother. Polar Boy enthusiastically announces he’s running for leader, while Dream Girl says she won’t run but does say she’s voting for Sensor Girl (making everyone wonder if Dreamy had a premonition of who’d win). Justice League 3 coverJustice League #3 – “Meltdown” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Kevin Maguire/Al Gordon

Last issue, three misguided heroes from another planet (or possibly dimension, I’m not sure which) came to Earth to destroy all the nuclear weapons, hoping to prevent a nuclear holocaust like the one that destroyed their world. The three (Wandjina, Silver Sorceress, and Blue Jay) tangled with the Justice League and ended up taking refuge in Bialya, whose strongman leader (Rumaan Harjavti) thinks he can use them to rid all his rivals of their nukes … starting with the Russians. Xena title cardForgiven – Director: Garth Maxwell/Writer: R.J. Stewart

This one starts with a couple of bandits (Wayan and Micah) stealing the Urn of Apollo, a sacred vessel that Apollo’s priests use in rituals to forgive people’s sins. The priests ask Xena to get the Urn back. Xena believes forgiveness has to come from within, that it can’t be given by someone else. But Gabi understands the concept and talks Xena into helping. Batman 409 coverBatman #409 – “Just Another Kid on Crime Alley” – Max Allan Collins/Ross Andru/Dick Giordano

This issue continues the revised story of how Batman first met Jason Todd, which means it’s set a few years ago. It opens with a recap of last issue, showing how Jason tried to steal the wheels off the Batmobile and how Batman promised not to call the cops if Jason attended Ma Gunn’s School for Wayward Boys. Wonder Woman 5 coverWonder Woman #5 – “The Ares Assault” – Len Wein/George Perez/Bruce Patterson

This one starts with the Amazons trying to figure out what’s going on in the outside world. They know Ares is causing trouble and his influence is even being felt in Themiscyra, but they can’t get any word from the gods about how Diana’s mission is going. The gods are all embarking on a huge ship that’s supposed to take them to oblivion, but the goddesses are delaying as much as possible to give Diana a chance to stop Ares.
