Batman #356 – “The Double Life of Hugo Strange” – Gerry Conway/Don Newton/Dick Giordano
This one starts with Hugo Strange (who, as we saw last issue, is very much alive) indulging in his favourite hobby … dressing up like Batman. Strange has pulled this trick before, but this time he’s got doppelgangers of Alfred and Dick Grayson as well. Elsewhere, Bruce Wayne is on a date with Vicki Vale, who ditches him to go finish a story. Bruce can’t complain too much, since his love life usually takes a backseat to his crimefighting career, so he tells her to come by his place when she’s done. Flash #317 – “A Fast Way to Die” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Dennis Jensen
Last issue ended with Goldface beating the crap out of Flash and tying his unconscious body to an anchor at the bottom of a lake. Goldface gloats about beating the speedster and heads for the surface, figuring Flash is dead. But Flash has been faking it, holding his breath until Goldface left. He’s almost out of breath and still hurting from the beating, so all he can do is spin his body around at super-speed, hoping to pull the anchor loose from the lake-bed. Episode 11: Silence of the Lamb
This one starts with Keith showing Veronica an article in the paper about the E-String Strangler, a serial killer who strangles women with a guitar string. The Strangler had been around Neptune a couple years ago when Keith was still Sheriff and everyone thought he’d been caught committing similar crimes up in Oakland. Justice League of America #210 – “When a World Dies Screaming” – Gerry Conway/Rich Buckler/Romeo Tanghal
This one starts with Ray (Atom) Palmer and a colleague named David using a special sub-electron microscope at Ivy Town university. David has postulated the existence of an “X-element”, a sort of catalyst that ties all the atoms in the universe together. David and Ray have finally observed the X-element, but they noticed it’s decaying rapidly which will mean disaster for all life on Earth. Superman #379 – “The Bizarro-Buster is Loose” – Cary Bates/Curt Swan/Dave Hunt
This one starts on Bizarro World (which is a planet shaped like a cube), where Bizarro has called a meeting of the Bizarro-JLA to discuss a problem … Bizarros are spontaneously exploding. At first, the Bizarro-JLAers don’t believe him, but after they start blowing up they figure he might be onto something. Unfortunately it’s too late and the epidemic continues all through Bizarro World, culminating in the Bizarros at the Daily Planet exploding too. Episode 10: An Echolls Family Christmas
This one starts with Veronica and her dad decorating the Christmas tree. Of course, Christmas in California is always a little weird, since it doesn’t snow there; it’s kinda like summer everywhere else. Keith is one of those people that likes the have the decorations in proper balance around the tree. They’re also watching that old TV special “The Year Without a Santa Claus”. Batman #355 – “Never Scratch a Cat” – Gerry Conway/Don Newton/Alfredo Alcala
This one starts with Catwoman freaking out about Bruce Wayne dating Vicki Vale. Last issue, Catwoman showed up at Vicki’s place to scare her off, but Vicki and Bruce kept dating, which is really putting Catwoman over the edge … even though she’s he one who dumped Bruce and left Gotham in the first place. Speaking of Bruce and Vicki, they’re driving home from a date when a cat-themed car appears on the highway behind them. Well, that’s another year’s worth of reviews gone by. I actually had some of the 1982 comics, so reviewing them brought back some great memories, and the same will be true of the upcoming 1983 reviews. As usual, I’ll divide this preview into sections corresponding to my groupings for the reviews. The titles I’m doing for 1983 are almost exactly the same as 1982, so I figure I may as well leave the groupings the same.
