Green Lantern 204 coverGreen Lantern #204 – “Young and Innocent” – Steve Englehart/Joe Staton/Mark Farmer

This one starts with the Green Lanterns examining Arisia in a machine whipped up by Kilowog. They’re worried because she freaked out when fighting Whiteout and Lanterns are supposed to be fearless. Katma Tui almost mentions Arisia’s dizzy spell a couple issues ago, but stops herself (although John knows she’s hiding something). Arisia checks out fine, but Hal worries Kilowog’s machine might’ve missed something. Hal takes Arisia aside and tells her to stop flirting with him since she looks like a teenager (even though she’s technically not). Naturally, she doesn’t take that too well. Meanwhile, the villain of this issue (Baron Tyrano, whoLanterns announce their presence on Earth fought GL way back in issue 54) shows up at a bar dressed like Yul Brynner in Westworld and wastes some guy that used to work for him. At Lantern headquarters, Dr. Ub’x says he’s heading to Africa to work on evolving animals so they’ll be like himself and Ch’p. The Lanterns decide it’s time to announce their presence on Earth, so each flies to a different continent to let people know how to reach them in case of trouble. We see Baron Tyrano, who seems to be paralyzed in an iron lung of some kind. (He watches a lot of TV, so I assume Hal talks to Tawnyhe’s using robots to do his bidding in the world at large, which explains the Westworld-type robot from earlier.) He’s not happy about so many Lanterns being based on Earth now and wonders what he can do about it. Tawny Young gets an exclusive with the Lanterns and soon realizes John (who Tawny used to date) is in love with Katma now. Tawny is distracted when she meets the other GLs and is fascinated that there are now five alien Lanterns on Earth. On Maltus, Guy Gardner is still obeying Appa and helping the Maltusians, but he’s not happy about it. Baron Tyrano decides to attack the seven Lanterns directly andTyrano overwhelmed creates seven replicas of himself and sends them to GL headquarters. Tyrano’s replicas are hard to beat because any force used on them is spread equally among all seven. Kilowog and Salakk figure it out and the Lanterns all pound their foes at the same time, overloading Tyrano’s mental faculties. Not only do the replicas disappear, but with Tyrano unconscious, the robots attending to him vanish as well (the implication being that he dies for lack of care). Later, Kilowog checks (and treats) the Lanterns in a medi-bed he whips up and he notices that Arisia has gotten taller. Unfortunately, that’ll have to remain a mystery because this is going to be my last Green Lantern review. The title will officially be changing to Green Lantern Corps and featuring the adventures of the seven GLs now on Earth, but to be honest I don’t really care all that much, so I figure this is a good jumping-off point.

Firestorm 51 coverFirestorm #51 – “Collision Course” – Gerry Conway/Joe Brozowski/Rodin Rodriguez

This one starts with Firestorm averting a crash between boats in New York Harbor. One of the vessels is a party boat where Ronnie Raymond’s dad (Ed) is celebrating his marriage to Felicity Smoak. When Firestorm returns to the boat and splits into Ronnie and Professor Stein, Felicity takes Ronnie aside to chat. She assures him that dropping the lawsuit against Firestorm wasn’t because she’d figured out his secret identity, it was because of his impassioned speech in court. She realized he wasn’t as irresponsible as she’d thought and felt petty for suingRonnie tells the cops his theory him when he was trying to help people. Ronnie’s not too thrilled about his dad remarrying, but I think Felicity is starting to grow on him. Later, he and Doreen go to visit Hugo in hospital. The cops are there and ask Ronnie about his theory that someone was trying to hurt him, not Hugo (because Hugo accidentally took Ronnie’s football helmet and the helmet’s strap was cut). Ronnie sees Cliff Carmichael lurking around and wonders if he’d be crazy enough to cut the helmet strap. Cliff takes off and Ronnie sees Professor Stein going into a hospital room … except it turns out not to be Stein; it’s a guy named Crusher fights KillerEddie Slick, who manages a wrestler named Crusher. Eddie has been giving Crusher pills to make him stronger, but they’re also making him sick. Eddie tells Crusher to trust him, assuring him the pills aren’t steroids, but some kind of designer drug made my the mob. Professor Stein is at dinner with Emily (after two dates that ended prematurely because of Firestorm business) and tells her he’s not exactly experienced when it comes to women. She’s cool with that as long as he doesn’t run out on her again (and doesn’t think she’s desperate). At the arena, Eddie gives Crusher some more pills, even though he’s already feeling like shit. Eddie has apparently made a deal with the mobCrusher goes after Stein to screw Crusher up and tells his contacts he’ll need a new protege after tonight’s fight. Crusher gets in trouble right away and begs for more pills, but suddenly he Hulks out and goes nuts, slamming his opponent around like a rag doll. He comes after Eddie, who takes off. By a stunning coincidence, the restaurant where Stein and Emily ate is right across from the arena, so when Eddie takes off, Crusher comes out looking for blood and sees Stein … who he assumes is Eddie. So I guess the whole thing with Stein having a double was just to set up this mistaken identity moment and put Stein in jeopardy.

Vigilante 33 coverVigilante #33 – “Deadly Interlude” – Paul Kupperberg/Chuck Patton/Rick Magyar

This one deals with rape and is pretty intense (at least for 1986), so skip it if that sort of thing triggers you. The story starts with a couple of women planning a night out, but one of them (Robyn) has to run back to the office to get her wallet. She runs into a dude on the elevator who pulls a knife … and unfortunately, he’s not after money. At JFK Airport, Vigilante is trailing some gunmen who work for the mystery man that’s been killing mobsters all over town lately. Vigilante’s hoping to get some leads by catching the gunmen, but he ends up having to kill all ofgym blown up them. In Manhattan, Robyn is so traumatized by her assault she won’t come out of the elevator and won’t let any (male) cops near her. Officer Anne Pasquale ends up talking to her, assuring her they’ll find her rapist (who’s done this to four other women so far). They do find the disguise he wore, but he’s long gone. Vigilante arrives home as Dave Winston and runs into his Uncle Steve (a cop, like most of Dave’s family), who invites him to a family dinner. Meanwhile, we see some guy named Nelson arriving home to his nice family life with his wife. Nelson has some dark desires haunting him, so I guess he’s meant to be the rapist. Adrian Chase is working out at a gym (and being ogled by a Anne tells Dave her storycouple of babes), feeling guilty about his former career as Vigilante and how everything he touches seems to turn to shit. The same religious nut who blew up the other gym last issue is here and he leaves another bomb, blowing half this place to hell. Apparently he thinks he’s ridding the world of “sinners” since a lot of people use health clubs as pick-up spots. Dave goes to pick up Anne for their date (yeah, Vigilante is dating a cop … not too smart, although she doesn’t know his secret yet). She’s kinda out of it and tells him about the rape cases she’s investigating, admitting that it’s getting to her because she was raped in college. Dave says he’ll help her any way he can and she tells him she loves him. The next day, Dave goes to see his brother Richard (another cop) to get some info on the serial rapist. Richard fills him in andVigilante shoots the rapist mentions that Anne will be going undercover as a decoy to catch the rapist, which worries Dave. He hangs out at the building where Anne is undercover and sure enough, the rapist attacks her on the elevator. He realizes she’s a cop and starts pounding her until Vigilante confronts him. He uses Anne as a shield, forcing Vigilante to toss his gun. Anne fights back and Vigilante decks the scumbag, but gets distracted when Anne tries to arrest both of them. The guy knocks Vigilante down and goes after Anne again, but Vigilante uses Anne’s gun and blows the guy’s head off. Anne decides to let Vigilante go.

Warlord 109 coverWarlord #109 – “The Revenge of the Vampire” – Michael Fleisher/Ron Randall/Steve Montano

Last issue, Travis Morgan, Shakira, and Daimon were trekking through a frozen valley when Daimon accidentally awoke a lamia (Mortalla) and fell under her spell. Mortalla enslaved some other guys, sending them against Morgan, Shakira, and their barbarian allies, who were trying to warn Morgan about the lamia. Morgan manages to keep from being tossed off a cliff and starts executing Mortalla’s thralls with wooden stakes (a remedy taught to him by the barbarian leader, Kbdarr). Mortalla flees, taking Daimon with her, to find the amulet that wasgetting blessed weapons taken from her millennia ago and buried under a sacred tree. Daimon is now super-strong because of Mortalla and easily pulls the tree up by its roots, giving her the chance to retrieve the amulet. Kbdarr tells Morgan and Shakira that Mortalla will now be able to summon the spectres of the dead. He takes them to his village, where the shaman prays to their god for help. The prayers are answered and a number of enchanted weapons appear. Meanwhile out on the ocean, Machiste and Mariah are forced to swim when he skeleton boat they were in sinks. (Always trying to make gorillas look bad …) In the icy valley, Mortalla raises more undead and attacks the barbarian village. The weapons Morgan and the others are using help them kill the undead, but there are too many and they end up getting captured. Mortalla orders Daimon to kill Shakira, but she implores him to find some shred of humanity inside himself and he apparently does, hesitating. Mortalla blasts him with her amulet and Morgan breaks free andMorgan fights Mortalla attacks her. Even a wooden stake can’t finish her, but Morgan notices her recoil when struck by a reflected ray from her amulet. He gets the amulet away from her and blasts her with it, forcing her to flee in bat form. Daimon is lingering somewhere between life and death and begs Morgan to end his torment, so Morgan drives a stake through his heart, bringing him peace.
