This is the introduction of the famous (or infamous) Detroit Justice League, the new team that stays around through the end of the JLA series. I’ll review the December issue of JLA next week, since it takes place after this issue. This story starts with the Justice League in orbit, trying to salvage what’s left of their Satellite headquarters, which was destroyed during the Martian invasion in issue 230. Last issue, the JLA met a couple of kids and their aunt and traveled to Earth-2 to fight the kids’ father, Joshua Champion. Champion had tapped into an alternate dimension and was mentally dominated by the Commander, who imbued Champion with power to help Commander’s invasion of Earth’s dimension. Champion resisted and gave his kids (Ian and Victoria) and his sister (Meredith) powers of their own, hoping they could resist the Commander. This (and the next one) is obviously a fill-in issue before the big revamp. This story is narrated by an unseen being (the Commander), who’s been watching the JLA for a while but doesn’t seem to understand them too well, and is involved with someone he calls “the Champion”. After nine JLAers transported to Earth during the Martian invasion (which we saw in the last few issues), Superman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl showed up on the Satellite in response to a call from Flash. Last issue, a Martian invasion fleet showed up to attack Earth. J’onn J’onzz (aka Martian Manhunter) preceded the fleet by mere hours, warning the humans about the imminent invasion, but not everyone was convinced of J’onn’s loyalty. J’onn opposes the Martian leader (known as the Marshal) who wants J’onn dead because many Martians look on him as a hero. J’onn decided to go after the Martian flagship on his own and stole a JLA spaceship, leaving a breach in the bulkhead of the Satellite. This one starts with a space shuttle in orbit around Earth getting blasted by a Martian warship. Firestorm and J’onn (Martian Manhunter) J’onzz fly up to help, but Firestorm is pretty suspicious of J’onn. Even though J’onn came to Earth last issue to warn of his fellow Martians’ plan to invade, Firestorm wonders if J’onn might secretly be in league with the other Martians. (He’s not … the Martians consider him a traitor to their race.) This one starts with a familiar character (J’onn J’onzz aka Martian Manhunter) in a spaceship being pursued by other ships sent by someone called the Marshal. The other ships are piloted by green-skinned aliens (presumably Martians like J’onn) and one of them is a woman named J’en, who seems to have feelings for J’onn but knows her duty is to stop him. J’onn flies his ship past the JLA Satellite on the way to Earth, alerting his ex-teammates that something’s up. This one starts on a lonely island in the Pacific where a bunch of Fiatlux brothers are trying to escape. They end up being devoured by strange flora and fauna on the island, including a couple of dragons. The last leader of Fiatlux (the Falconer, aka Lord Claw) gloats that he’s now the supreme commander of the group, since his two rivals have been taken care of (as we saw in the last couple of issues). Last issue, a cult known as Fiatlux started recruiting people who were missing something in their lives. They also stole a new substance called Luciferase from the lab of Ray Palmer, alerting the JLA to their misdeeds. The leader of Fiatlux was playing a more dangerous game and used the Luciferase summon a demon from Perdition named Hellrazer. Zatanna, Black Canary, Green Arrow, and Hawkgirl arrived at cult headquarters just in time for the summoning. This one starts with Ray (Atom) Palmer returning to Ivy College after his recent adventures in South America (in the Sword of the Atom mini-series). Ray is startled to find a bunch of guys in his lab stealing something called Luciferase. The thieves are kinda weird, speaking in hesitant monotones like robots. This one starts with Hal (Green Lantern) Jordan, Clark (Superman) Kent, and Oliver (Green Arrow) Queen meeting for lunch at a restaurant in Star City. The waitress thinks she’s ht the jackpot having three studs like them at her table, but Oliver is more concerned with Black Canary, who’s late for lunch. We see Black Canary on her way to the restaurant (having stopped a bank robbery) getting delayed by an altercation in an alley.
