This one starts with Martin Stein being told by a doctor that he has an inoperable brain tumour and that he has eight months to live at the most. Stein has been having dizzy spells and headaches lately, which he assumed had something to do with his drinking problem, like some kind of withdrawal symptoms. Across town, a guy named Xavier Pervis taps into the city power grid to feed his natural ability to manipulate metal. The power boost lets him change large masses of metal, but he knows tapping into the city grid isn’t practical, so he’s built a suit that can gather energy from the sun. Comics Reviews: Legion of Super-Heroes 28, New Teen Titans 25

This one starts with a handful of Legionnaires (Chameleon Boy, Dawnstar, Star Boy, Invisible Kid, and Timber Wolf) on a mission to Xanthu (Star Boy’s home planet), where they’re helping repair the huge orbit-beacon that guides incoming ships to land on the planet. The beacon was damaged by a meteor strike, so the Legionnaires have to repair it and get it back into its proper orbit. Comics Reviews: JLA 256, All-Star Squadron 63, Infinity Inc. 32

Last issue, J’onn J’onzz was knocked into a fireplace and since Martians are vulnerable to fire, he wasn’t too happy about it. This issue opens with the whole apartment on fire and J’onn trapped in the middle of it. He starts seeing H’ronmeer, the Martian god of death (and fire), who beckons him into the flames. Comics Reviews: Batman 401, Detective 568, Outsiders 13

Batman 401 coverBatman #401 – “A Bird in the Hand” – Barbara J. Randall/Trevor von Eeden

This is definitely a post-Crisis story, and the first Batman comic for the last few years that wasn’t written by Doug Moench. The villain in this one is Magpie, a new character introduced in John Byrne’s Man of Steel mini-series, and supposedly the first villain Batman and Superman fought together as a team.
