Green Lantern 200 coverGreen Lantern #200 – “Five Billion Years” – Steve Englehart/Joe Staton/Bruce Patterson

This one starts on Oa with the Guardians of the Universe preparing to give up their responsibilities as galactic protectors and move on. Sinestro tries to talk to one of the Guardians, but he warns the villain to consider repentance instead off interfering with matters beyond him. The other Guardians give us a helpful review of what happened last issue with the three Green Lanterns of Earth: John Stewart (and Katma Tui) are returning to Oa with the former Guardian Appa Ali Apsa (or Old timer, as he used to be called); Hal Jordan and some other Lanterns are coming back after defeating Goldface and his alien pal; and Guy Gardner has gone to offer his services to Star Sapphire on Zamaron. Green Lantern 199 coverGreen Lantern #199 – “Ignition” – Steve Englehart/Joe Staton/Mark Farmer, Bob Smith

This one starts on Oa, with the Guardians and Green Lantern Corps officially welcoming Hal Jordan back as a Lantern. (Hal got his ring back from John Stewart when John received Tomar-Re’s ring upon Tomar’s death last issue.) We learn that 912 Lanterns died in the Crisis (out of 3600) and fourteen of the thirty-six Guardians also perished. The remaining Guardians are rather subdued, but tell the Lanterns they have specific tasks for them to accomplish. Continue reading “Green Lantern 199, Firestorm 46, Vigilante 28, Warlord 104”

Green Lantern 198 coverGreen Lantern #198 – “1” – Steve Englehart/Joe Staton/Bruce Patterson

Last issue, Hal Jordan got a new ring from a Guardian and was told to help Guy Gardner and his band of villains in their mission to destroy the moon of Qward. Right after Guy and company left, Sinestro showed up to tell John Stewart and Katma Tui that they had to stop Guy’s mission. Sinestro explains that Qward is the twin of Oa in the anti-matter universe and its moon is the birthplace of the Anti-Monitor, just as Oa’s moon spawned the Monitor. Sinestro says if the moon is destroyed it’ll break the symmetry between the positive and negative matter universes, throwing everything into chaos. Wonder Woman 329 coverWonder Woman #329 – “Of Gods and Men” – Gerry Conway/Don Heck

This one starts with Ares (the god formerly known as Mars) and Hades in the Underworld making a deal. Apparently, the Anti-Monitor has taken over the underworld and instead of fighting him, Hades has decided to ally with him. On Paradise Island, Wonder Woman makes peace with her mother Hippolyta, telling her she still loves her. But Hippolyta still despairs about the Crisis, believing it means the end for the Greek gods and the Amazons. Kore (aka Persephone) shows up to tell Hippolyta that death will bring no release. Firestorm Annual 3 coverFirestorm Annual #3 – “Sparx” – Gerry Conway/Rafael Kayanan/Ian Akin, Brian Garvey

This story takes place just before Ronnie’s graduation and Professor Stein’s move to Pittsburgh. It starts with some modern-day pirates robbing a tourist boat on the Hudson River. Firestorm tries to stop them, but his powers conk out when he makes himself intangible (not the first time that’s happened), which results in the Statue of Liberty being damaged. Firestorm fixes it, but he still looks like an idiot for letting it happen in the first place. Continue reading “Comics Reviews: Firestorm Annual 3, Vigilante Annual 1, Warlord Annual 4”

Firestorm 42 coverFirestorm #42 – “A Long Night’s Journey Into Day” – Gerry Conway/Rafael Kayanan/Ian Akin, Brian Garvey

This one starts with Lorraine (Firehawk) Reilly and Donna (Wonder Girl) Long flying around over Manhattan (or what’s left of it) discussing all the crazy crap they’ve seen since the Crisis started. Firehawk has a new look, with a better colour scheme and more bad-ass flames. The two heroines are looking for their loved ones (Donna’s husband Terry and Lorraine’s father), but New York has been altered by the Crisis. Meanwhile, Firestorm is in Pittsburgh, getting ready to head for Vandemeer College where Professor Stein will be teaching and Ronnie Raymond will be a student. Flash 350 coverFlash #350 – “Flash Flees” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Frank McLaughlin

This one opens with Captain Frye telling his fellow police officers that Flash escaped from his jail cell last night and needs to be apprehended, since he was found guilty of killing Professor Zoom. The cops aren’t happy about treating Flash like any old criminal, but they know their duty is to bring him in. Cecile Horton (Flash’s lawyer) goes to see Barry Allen’s parents and tells them she knows Barry is really Flash, but the Allens don’t know where their son disappeared to either. Flash 349 coverFlash #349 – “…and the Truth Shall Set Him Free” – Cary Bates/Carmine Infantino/Frank McLaughlin

Last issue, a revived Professor Zoom (or someone who looks like him) took over the body of juror Nathan Newbury and (after hypnotizing the rest of the jury) delivered the verdict in Flash’s murder trial … guilty. Flash is stunned and allows himself to be handcuffed and taken to prison. His lawyer (Cecile Horton) can hardly process it and refuses to talk to the press. Newbury also brushes off a reporter and speeds away from the courthouse, revealing himself to be Zoom once he’s out of sight.
