Justice League America #35 – “Lifeboat” – Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis/Adam Hughes/Art Nichols, Jose Marzon, Joe Rubinstein
Last issue, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle set up a casino on Kooeykooeykooey, a Pacific island whose natives thought the League’s presence might keep away the world powers. But the island turned out to have a mind of its own and decided to uproot and drift away, causing havoc with the tourists and residents alike. This issue starts with Max Lord coming teleporting to Kooeykooeykooey to give Beetle and Booster shit for draining the League’s bank accounts to finance the casino. But the teleport tube is now under water, so Max finds himself in the middle of the ocean with no island in sight. He’s followed by Oberon, Huntress, and Ice, who gets stung by a Portuguese man o’war and has to be rescued by Huntress. Ice is in bad shape, but Max asks her to create an ice raft for them to float on. Back at the Embassy in New York, Mr. Miracle and Guy Gardner find a guy going through the League’s garbage. There’s something sinister about the dude, but we don’t find out what his deal is yet. There also seems to be something alive inside one of the garbage cans. In the Pacific, Max and the others find their signal devices are useless, they’re surrounded by sharks, and Ice’s condition is getting worse. On Kooeykooeykooey, Aquaman comes up with a way to stop the island’s drift: anchor it to an underwater volcano. But they need a way to activate the volcano, so Major Disaster volunteers to use his powers (and Beetle realizes Disaster must’ve cheated to break the bank and wipe them out last issue). On the tiny ice floe, Huntress questions why she joined the League in the first place and Max admits he used his mental powers to “persuade” her. She tries to strangle him, so he uses his powers again to make her forget his confession. Under the ocean, Major Disaster uses his power to make the volcano erupt and Aquaman has some whales push the island so it ends up anchored to the volcano. Aquaman heads off to check a signal from some agitated sharks, while Disaster returns to Kooeykooeykooey. He’s expecting everyone to hate him, but he’s hailed as a hero, which saves him from Beetle’s wrath. Max and the others are going nuts on the tiny ice raft when Aquaman finds them; he’s not sure if he should rescue them or not. Guy and J’onn show up to bring people home and Guy zips to the nearest hospital with Ice. Since he didn’t technically cheat, Major Disaster is paid off by the natives … in their own currency, which isn’t good anywhere else in the world. Back in New York, Max punishes Booster and Beetle by making them clean up the Embassy, starting with Guy’s shithole of a room.
Justice League Europe #11 – “Family Ties” – Keith Giffen, William Messner-Loebs/Bart Sears
This one starts with Metamorpho stewing about the kid he just found out he has. He wants to see the child and vows to go right through Simon Stagg if he has to. Captain Atom is worried (since Stagg is a media darling), so Animal Man and Rocket Red volunteer to go along to make sure Metamorpho doesn’t do anything too stupid (even though Animal Man is still mourning his own family, who were recently killed in the pages of his own title). Captain Atom is still worried, so he calls the New York branch. Guy Gardner (who naturally idolizes a right-wing capitalist asshole like Stagg) volunteers to head over to protect him. In Moscow, a man named Mallinovsky tries to have some political prisoners freed, but doesn’t get anywhere. The prisoners turn out to be Blue Jay and Silver Sorceress and Mallinovsky slips them a serum to restore their super-powers right before he’s arrested for treason. At Simon Stagg’s office, he’s discussing the care of his grandson (who apparently has something weird going on with him) with Will Magnus. Magnus has been experimenting on the kid and keeping his powers in check. Guy shows up to warn Stagg about Metamorpho and Stagg prepares for the worst. But Metamorpho and his minders are at Stagg’s house, where (after decking Java) Sapphire agrees to take them to the lab to see their kid. When Metamrpho gets a look (we don’t actually see the child), he’s stunned. Sapphire explains that the kid has Metamorpho’s powers, but he can transform anything, not just his own body. He has to be kept isolated because of that, but Metamorpho quickly realizes that Stagg has been using the kid’s powers to manufacture a new energy source so he can get rich. Metamorpho freaks and tries to get into the baby’s room, but Guy is waiting for him. They fight and Metamorpho beats the shit out of him after turning into gold (since Guy’s ring doesn’t work against anything yellow). Before Metamorpho can rescue his son, Stagg’s back-up arrives … the Metal Men. I’m not a big Metal Men fan, but I didn’t think Will Magnus was that big an asshole as to experiment on kids and use his robots to stop a concerned parent. I guess we’ll see what they do next issue.
