New Titans #70 – “Clay Pigeons” – Steve Erwin/Will Blyberg
This is a Deathstroke solo story about him getting involved in politics in the (fictional) South American country of San Miguel. Deathstroke is hired by an arms dealer and rebel sympathizer named Ramon Trujillo to destroy some weapons the government planned to use against the rebel forces. Without their weapons, the government is forced to release the rebel leader Jorge Zaxtro, a champion of the poor (and an old friend of Trujillo’s) who’s been in prison for twenty-five years. But the rebel leader (Luis Esteban) and a government security agent (Juan Lopez) tell Deathstroke that some of Zaxtro’s own supporters want him dead because they’ve gotten used to holding the reins of power. The government doesn’t want a dead martyr to rally support for the rebels, so they’d like Deathstroke to insure Zaxtro’s survival. Deathstroke doesn’t trust the government and even though he’s a mercenary, he has his own code of honour and doesn’t want to support the wrong side. Deathstroke stops some assassins who try to kill Zaxtro during a speech and Trujillo tells him they are supposedly Zaxtro’s supporters. Deathstroke heads to the rebel camp and interrogates a soldier, who swears none of them would ever harm Zaxtro since he’s their hero. Deathstroke talks to Lopez, who swears the government needs Zaxtro alive to keep receiving foreign aid from the United States. So Deathstroke wonders who really wants Zaxtro dead and he stakes out Zaxtro’s next public appearance. As the President of San Miguel announces Zaxtro’s appointment to join the coalition government, an Army helicopter attacks. Zaxtro is wounded before Deathstroke can fight off the choppers and the government and rebels start blaming each other. In the hospital later, more guys show up to kill Zaxtro but Deathstroke wastes them. He realizes they had help getting to Zaxtro’s room and accuses Trujillo of being behind the attacks. Trujillo has been supplying weapons to both sides, so continuing the fight is in his best interests. Trujillo tries to flee, but gets captured by Deathstroke’s buddy, Wintergreen.
Legion #12 – (Rebirth) – Tom and Mary Bierbaum/Keith Giffen/Al Gordon
This one starts with the Legionnaires still recovering from their fight with Roxxas last issue. Chameleon Boy is disturbed when he learns Rokk (Cosmic Boy) Krinn has sent Element Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Lightning Lass to hunt for Roxxas. In Brainiac 5’s lab, Celeste Rockfish is near death from Roxxas’s beating and is having weird memories (or dreams) of seeing a body wearing a Green Lantern ring. Coincidentally (or not), a green glow enters the lab and makes its way to Celeste’s room. Whatever the green energy is it seems to be reviving Cleste, so maybe it is Green Lantern energy … or maybe it’s the Emerald Eye of Ekron. Meanwhile, Brin (Timber Wolf) Londo is wandering around the woods looking much more human than his usual Furball form (although he does have a real Wolverine vibe going on). Apparently, he turns human during a full moon, but he doesn’t want his friends to know that he’s really Furball. The three Legionnaires close in on Roxxas, who’s half out-of-it after his fight with Ultra Boy last issue. He’s imagining blowing himself and the Legionnaires to hell, but when they confront him he just keels over. They consider letting him die, but decide they don’t want to be murderers like him. When he’s arrested, Roxxas tells the media he was hired by EarthGov to kill the Legionnaires. After being blasted by Roxxas last issue, Ultra Boy finds himself on a remote planet, but doesn’t yet realize he’s in Khund space. Chameleon Boy congratulates Rokk on the team’s triumph and shows him some new uniforms he’s whipped up. We get a lengthy epilogue with Persuader attacking a medical facility on the ocean world of Quarantine … the same facility where Garridan Ranzz is confined to keep him from spreading the Validus Plague. Luckily, ex-Legionnaire Kent Shakespeare happens to be on hand and goes after the Persuader. Unfortunately, despite all his powers (I think Kent is meant to be a Superboy analogue), Persuader soon gets the upper hand.
Suicide Squad #46 – “Choice of Evils” – John Ostrander, Kim Yale/Luke McDonnell/Geof Isherwood
This one starts in Jerusalem, with Poison Ivy and Count Vertigo showing some skin around the hotel pool. Ivy is still using her elixirs to control Vertigo and he warns her he’ll kill her if she ever relaxes her control. Elsewhere, Amanda Waller is still suspicious that Hayoth (the Israeli superhero team) managed to capture Kobra so easily last issue. She figures Kobra’s plan to destroy the city involves him being in prison, but doesn’t bother mentioning that to Colonel Hacohen of Mossad, although she does leave Atom behind to check things out. She does speculate about one of the Hayoth (Dybbuk) who is an artificial intelligence that can control computers. That worries Mossad enough that they have the Hayoth keep an eye on the Squad. In Australia, Deadshot is still pissed off that Captain Boomerang made them miss their flight, while his luggage (containing his costume and guns) went ahead. At the prison, Atom listens to Kobra apparently talking to himself, but Kobra somehow detects his presence and causes some scorpions to attack him. Amanda sends Vixen out to get a message to Bronze Tiger and Ravan, but she doesn’t realize Judith is following her. At the prison, Atom eavesdrops as Hacohen and Ramban discuss Dybbuk and Ramban warns that an AI could be dangerous if it starts thinking for itself. Judith attacks Vixen, Ravan, and Bronze Tiger, wounding Vixen badly before taking off. Bronze Tiger wants to get Vixen to a hospital, but Ravan points out that would compromise their mission. In prison, Kobra is still talking to himself but Atom figures out he’s really talking to Dybbuk, which he’s convinced to exceed its programming and join his crusade to bring about the world’s destruction. Dybbuk is going to commandeer some Israeli jets and have them blow up the Dome of the Rock, thus igniting a holy war. Unfortunately, Atom finds himself menaced by more scorpions before he can get away to warn anyone.
