The Librarians and the Fangs of Death – Director: Marc Roskin/Writer: Rob Wright
This one starts with Flynn having a nightmare (or “apocalyptic vision”) of Charlene trying to warn him about some impending threat that could cause worldwide destruction. Flynn is so freaked out he immediately takes Eve and tracks Charlene to a
temple in South America where he thinks she’s being tortured by cultists. Turns out she’s being pampered (and possibly more) by some oiled-up hunks and isn’t keen on leaving … until Flynn tells her Apep has returned. She says she’ll be ready to go in the morning, but when Flynn and Eve come to get her, the cultists have all killed each other and Charlene is gone … obviously Apep’s handiwork.
At the Annex, Flynn rewires the Back Door to home in on Charlene’s pendant (which she never takes off), hoping it’ll take him straight to her.
Jenkins thinks it’s too dangerous but Flynn goes anyway, followed closely by the other three Librarians. Before Eve can go through the portal it disconnects, leaving her and Jenkins in the Annex. The Librarians end up in an underground super-collider facility (in Canada apparently), but before they can look for Charlene (or puzzle out why Apep would even bring her there), a guard (Tom) pops up to confront them. Something intense is obviously happening there (judging by the blood and huge claws marks everywhere), so the guard is understandably nervous until Flynn uses the Librarian magic to charm him into believing they’re from some government census department. He warns them there’s trouble in the facility and says he’ll take them to what’s left of his own team. Meanwhile, Eve and Jenkins use the portal to get as close to
the others as they can, but that turns out to be anywhere within five miles. Inside the facility, the Librarians meet the rest of the survivors: Becker, a gung ho military type; Greg, a half-drunk Scotsman who’s freaked out by the whole business; and Kelly, a cool-headed scientist who’s involved with Tom. Flynn is focused on Charlene, but the others are worried about the collider explosion that’s turned most of the scientists in the facility into ravenous werewolves, infecting others when they bite them.
Flynn wants to get to the server room to check for evidence of Charlene’s
arrival, but the others want to get there to override the lockdown so they can get out. Ezekiel reconfigures the fire alarm sensors to show where the werewolves are (at least in the corridors), which gives Flynn, Ezekiel, Tom, and Becker a chance to make it to the server room. They find the controls wrecked, so they can’t override the lockdown and to make things worse, Ezekiel finds footage of a blonde woman (who Flynn assumes is Charlene) being caught in the super-collider explosion. Outside, Eve and Jenkins meet Sgt. Reuben, a stereotypical Canadian who says she’s lost communication with the facility but is willing to lead them there through the woods. Inside, Flynn wants to
go to the infirmary to check Charlene’s remains, but Jacob and Ezekiel convince him to get away from the werewolves first. They head over a catwalk and Tom is dragged down by a werewolf, but Ezekiel collapses the catwalk to cut off the rest. Unfortunately, a werewolf jumps the gap and bites Ezekiel before getting a face full of steam and falling off.
Cassandra reconstructs some more video that shows Charlene was probably
possessed by Apep and was the one who sabotaged the collider. It also shows Anubis emerging from the super-collider. Flynn realizes the whole thing was a trap set by Apep to lure them there so Anubis could kill some Librarians (who Apep still hates for defeating him in the first place). Outside, Eve and Jenkins figure out Sgt. Reuben is possessed by Apep and thy jump off a cliff to avoid being killed by him. (Since Jenkins is immortal, he takes the brunt of the fall to save Eve.) Inside, Flynn is despondent and Jacob realizes Ezekiel has been bitten. As if that
wasn’t bad enough, Becker sets the self-destruct to keep the lycanthropy from spreading and is wasted by the whole pack of werewolves. Flynn is almost ready to let the place blow up until Jacob talks some sense into him. They figure they can shut the power off to stop the self-destruct, but Ezekiel wil have to fill the corridors with steam to drive the werewolves out. He thinks he can do it because he’s been bitten and will smell like a werewolf to the rest of the pack.
The plan works and Ezekiel gets past the lycanthropes to fill the halls with
steam, driving the beasts to shelter. The others get to the collider room but Flynn suggests that if they wait until the collider is about to self-destruct, they might be able to recreate the conditions that brought Anubis there in the first place and send him back. That means Ezekiel has to turn off the steam, but he’s starting to turn into a werewolf, so Kelly and Greg have to come to the rescue and shut off the steam. Flynn lures the werewolves and Anubis towards the collider, but Apep shows up (still in Reuben’s body) to screw things up. But Eve and
Jenkins followed Reuben inside, so Eve tackles her and all hell breaks loose in the collider room as Anubis and the lycanthropes are annihilated (which cures Ezekiel) and Apep is banished from Reuben’s body. Back at the Annex, Cassandra uses some magic to reconstruct more of the video that shows Charlene wasn’t the one possessed by Apep who died in the first explosion. Flynn goes off to look for Charlene, leaving Eve a letter to explain his plans.
This is a pretty good episode that ramps up the threat posed by Apep by involving Charlene. We get some background on her, learning she was
Judson’s Guardian (which everyone treats like a big revelation, but I’d swear it was already mentioned back in Season 1 somewhere). Jenkins tells Eve about the ultimate battle between Good and Evil, a battle Apep is trying to restart now after Judson imprisoned him and locked away Pure Evil a couple thousand years ago. It was interesting to see Anubis here and since Apep is an Egyptian god, I assume we’ll get more Egyptian mythology this season. Flynn leaving to look for Charlene seems like a rather contrived way to get him out of the show for most of the season (since Noah Wylie is only contracted for a few episodes), but I don’t really mind because I think the show works better
with just the core team and Eve. It was cool to see an episode set in Canada (where I assume it was shot), with Ringrose Peak in Alberta getting a specific mention. Reuben’s stereotype accent was stupid though; I’ve lived my entire life in Canada and nobody up here talks like that. It’s more of a Minnesota accent, but for some reason Americans think we sound like that. As usual, there were plenty of cool touches, like Charlene’s toyboys, the Aliens vibe in the collider facility, and Eve cracking Jenkins’s back.
