The Librarians and the Reunion of Evil – Director: Noah Wyle/Writer: Kate Rorick
This one starts with Jacob and Cassandra in Sweden exploring an ice cave. They’re looking for an artifact (the Angrboda Crystal) that Flynn was supposed to collect before taking off to look for Charlene last episode. Little do they know, someone else is in the cave watching them …
Cassandra searches for the crystal with goggles that show anything magical, but it turns out they don’t need them since the crystal is encased in
a huge pillar of ice covered in runes. Back at the Annex, Eve is trying to teach Ezekiel to live up to his potential but he’s not really interested. Eve forces him to help fix the incubator for Nessie’s egg. (Yeah, the Loch Ness Monster left her egg with Jenkins.) She tells Ezekiel to carry the egg with him and keep it warm, kinda like those high school Health projects where you have to look after an egg to (supposedly)
know what it’s like to have a baby. Back in the ice cave, Jacob and Cassandra get the ice pillar down but it’s too heavy to drag, so Cassandra suggests they use magic to crack open the outer casing so they can get the crystal. Jacob doesn’t like that idea but he’s interrupted by the mysterious figure, who obviously wants the crystal too. They fight and the intruder retreats outside into a blizzard. While Jacob tries to follow him, Cassandra uses magic to crack open the ice pillar.
Unfortunately, Jacob’s warning about magic having consequences is right because as soon as it’s freed, the crystal flies at Cassandra and is absorbed into her chest. They head down the mountain but are caught in the blizzard,
so they take shelter at a big hotel that seems to have appeared out of nowhere. They have no cell signal and the hotel doesn’t have a phone either. It turns out the hotel is hosting a private reunion and is closed to everyone else, so Jacob grabs the last name tag (Finklestein) and claims to be there for the reunion. Naturally, he runs into someone who knows Finklestein, but the guy doesn’t recognize him as an impostor. The reason becomes clear when Cassandra uses the magic goggles to check out the guests, who are all monsters in human guise. Jacob
soon figures it out too, but all of the guests (including Olafsson, Norman, and Meredith) think that he and Cassandra are also wearing human disguises. Cassandra claims to be Finklestein’s sister and is immediately taken to Orientation by Meredith, leaving Jacob to hang out with Olafsson and Norman. Back at the Annex, Eve is worried that she hasn’t heard from them, but when she tries to get to the mountain, an avalanche of snow blocks the Back Door.
At the reunion, Stone bonds with everyone by drinking beer and playing games. Cassandra’s “orientation” turns out to be drinking with Meredith
and listening to her complain about what a horrible boyfriend Finklestein was. Cassandra urges her to get over him and Meredith (who’s been pounding Bloody Marys) lets Cassandra know she’s open to “new ideas”. (In other words, she’s DTF if Cassie is … which she apparently is not.) Cassandra retreats to the bathroom to use the mirror and the goggles to contact the Annex, but can only get through for a
few seconds. Meredith comes in and lets her know the reason for the reunion: they all want to consume the Angrboda Crystal and have decided to share instead of fighting over it like they used to. Cassandra is freaked out, but it gets worse when the very mention of the Angrboda Crystal makes it glow inside her chest (which Meredith misses because she’s in a bathroom stall).
Cassandra lets Jacob know what’s happening and after he gets a look at his new friends with the goggles, he realizes they’re Frost Giants. He and
Cassandra argue about using magic and he points out that her use of the spell in the cave is why she’s now is danger of being consumed by the giants. At the Annex, Ezekiel points out that the storm in Sweden can’t be natural and Jenkins figures out the Frost Giants are behind it. Before Jacob and Cassandra can get out of the hotel, the ice casket is brought in and the ceremony begins. Jacob and Cassandra try to
slip out before the giants find out their crystal is missing, but they run right into the real Finklestein. Olafsson quizzes them to find out who the genuine Finklestein is and Jacob’s doing pretty well (because of his knowledge of mythology), but tumbles when it turns out Olafsson and Finklestein don’t actually like each other. Jacob and Cassandra take off with the entire frost giant convention chasing them.
They’re soon cornered but Jacob realizes Finklestein is the guy he fought in the cave and accuses him of trying to steal the crystal for himself. The other giants believe him until Cassandra mentions the crystal by name and her chest starts glowing again. At the Annex, Ezekiel taps into a DOSA satellite
to track any magical signatures inside the storm, which lets them home in on Jacob and Cassandra. They’re about to be sacrificed but Jacob gets loose with a little help from Cassandra’s magic and they end up being chased by the giants again. Jenkins opens a portal but it’s unstable, so Cassandra tells him to target the elevator. She and Jacob jump down the shaft and pop out in the Annex safe and sound, leaving the giants to fight over who’s fault it was they escaped (and over Finklestein trying to steal the crystal). At the Annex, Jenkins tells Cassandra the crystal
will pass through her system (yes, that means what you think it means) soon and Jacob lets her know he isn’t completely against her use of magic. He’s just worried that she’ll only see the benefits and not the drawbacks until it’s too late. As for the egg Ezekiel was looking after, it hatches and the baby Nessie imprints on him, which could have repercussions in the future but probably won’t.
This is a pretty good episode, although technically nothing much happens. I guess the point is to show that Cassandra needs to consider the negative
effects of magic to temper her enthusiasm for using it, and I think she did learn that lesson by the end. The Frost Giant stuff was just plot service, but there were some fun moments with Jacob’s camaraderie with the giants and the Finklestein showdown. We also continue the running theme of women being attracted to Cassandra, although in this case I think she really wasn’t into it … not because she couldn’t be, but I think Meredith kinda scared the crap out of her, especially since she knew right from the start that she was a giant. The B-story with
Ezekiel and the egg was almost pointless, although I suppose it showed Jenkins (and Eve) that he was worthy of their trust. But didn’t Eve already kinda come to that conclusion? We also learn that since humans stopped worshipping Frost Giants, they’ve been making do by causing various plagues and disasters; I love how Jacob impressed them by saying his favourite disaster is global warming.
Favourite Quotes:
- “You’re into kinky stuff?” Ezekiel when Eve tells him she’ll be wearing a blindfold (for his training exercise).
- “Do you like prune juice?” Jenkins letting Cassandra know that getting the crystal out of her system won’t be fun.
