Legion of Super-Heroes 33 coverLegion of Super-Heroes #33 – “Forgotten Planet” – Paul Levitz/Greg LaRocque/Mike DeCarlo, Arne Starr

Last issue, a quartet of Legionnaires (Saturn Girl, Dream Girl, Brainiac 5, and Chameleon Boy) found themselves on a strange planet with a bunch of others, all mind-controlled to be placid field workers. Saturn Girl’s natural psychic powers broke her mind-control and she freed her teammates. They decide to look for a way off the planet, but also want to know who brought them there in the first place and why. Saturn Girl puts up some false mental shields to make it seem like they’re all still mind-controlled and they head back to the work camp, trying to actfighting Zymyr like zombified thralls. On Hykraius, another four Legionnaires (Wildfire, Tellus, White Witch, and Quislet) are ambushed by Zymyr and a horde of robots. While the others hold off the robots, White Witch prepares a spell, but Zymyr uses his warping power to banish her to the middle of a desert somewhere (obviously not on Hykraius, since it’s an ocean world). Tellus is warped into a bubble where he’s attacked by strange spheres. Wildfire also finds himself in a desert, where one of Zymyr’s robots rips his containment suit open. Quislet is left to face Zymyr and decides he’d better get the hell out of there fast. On the prison planet, Chameleon Boy recons as an insect and a bird, tying to Atmos hits on Dream girlavoid the spy drones that are everywhere. Dream Girl is accosted by Atmos (also a prisoner), who is enthralled like everyone else, but seems to have some amorous intentions toward her. A spy drone scares him off, but the “drone” turns out to be Chameleon Boy, who changes into a fish to investigate the fountain Saturn Girl found last issue. He gets through to another place, a recycling centre of some kind and swims back to tell the others. Saturn Girl creates a mind-link so Brainy can see what Cham saw and figure out what to do. On Earth, we see Universo (who’s been masquerading as presidential aide Vid Gupta) forcing a mind-controlled President Desai to issue more decrees, including something about the Legion (who he already shut down last issue). On theprisoners freed from mind-control prison planet, Chameleon Boy has altered the chemical structure of the fountain water so it breaks the mind-control, freeing everyone of the planet. Saturn Girl fills them in on the situation and they all band together to destroy the drones and get to the control room. In Dominator space, the diplomatic mission that went to negotiate new peace agreements has hit a stumbling block … the Dominators accuse the United Planets of treachery and order them to leave. Ambassador Relnic (who’s secretly under Universo’s control) freaks and the Dominators start firing at his ship. Mon-El, Ultra Boy, and Blok head into space to scare the Dominators off, but before they can get back on the Ambassadors ship, taking out giant robotit starts firing at them. On the prison planet, the former prisoners find the control room and take out the automated defenses, including a giant robot. Brainy uses the tech in the control room to put together force-field projectors that will protect some on the prisoners on their way home. He also converts the robot’s head into a spaceship for himself and his fellow Legionnaires. They’re glad to get off the planet, but still have no idea who kidnapped them in the first place, or why the four of them were targeted specifically. Back on Earth, we see Element Lad and Shvaughn Erin musing about how great things are since the Legion disbanded and how wonderful life on Earth is under President Desai. I’m thinking Universo is mind-controlling them, but we’ll have to wait and see.

New Teen Titans 30 coverNew Teen Titans #30 – “Revolution” – Marv Wolfman, Paul Levitz/Eduardo Barreto/Romeo Tanghal

Last issue, Brother Blood supposedly came back from the dead on live TV, which caused a swell of belief in his powers and his Church of Blood. Blood is feeding off the psychic energy from the supporters, using it to empower himself and defeat the Titans. What’s worse, he’s already brainwashed Azrael, Raven, and Nightwing so they’ve become true believers, even helping Blood against their teammates. Blood revels in his victory and the surge of faith from around the world almost overloads the conversion machines. Cyborg recovers enough to attack Blood, who stats pounding him. ThatRaven blasts Cyborg clears Nightwing’s mind and he tries to stop Blood from killing Cyborg. He’s slapped down and Mother Mayhem injects him with a drug to put him back in Blood’s thrall. Raven uses her (now enhanced) psychic powers to blast Cyborg’s mind and Blood thanks her, showing her off to the masses. That pisses off Mother Mayhem, who’s carrying Blood’s child (who will eventually become the next Brother Blood), so she vows to get rid of Raven. Blood’s influence has extended to the military, which mobilizes in several countries, surrounding the White House and another government buildings. Robin (who stayed behind other heroes arrive in Washingtonto protect Arella last issue), observes everything in Blood’s control room and decides he’d better do something to help before Blood takes over the world. Frances Kane has called together a bunch of superheroes (Superman, Batman, Booster Gold, John Stewart, Katma Tui, Skyman, and Dr. Midnight) to help the Titans against Blood, but as they approach Washington, they notice the military threat and Superman says they have to protect innocent people. So the heroes all take off to deal with the enthralled soldiers, leaving Frances (who’s never been comfortable using her magnetic powers) to wonder how she can help the Titans all by herself. In Washington, Blood has the Titans (and Nightwing) taken out to be transported to Zandia, where they’ll be killed.Robin fights Confessor Raven lingers, thinking about her teammates and Robin brings Arella’s unconscious body in, hoping that’ll get through to Raven. Confessor blasts Robin, but Raven uses her empathic powers to drive Confessor away. She tries to help Arella, but has to leave when Blood summons her. When Robin wakes up, he’s surprised to find Arella reviving. The Titans are loaded on a plane bound for Zandia, but it doesn’t get far before it’s brought down by magnetism. Yes, Frances finally decides to help, crashing the plane and freeing the Titans, who quickly pound the guards. Mayhem knows the Titans have escaped and Blood too strong for the Titansorders her acolytes to feed Blood as much power as they can. The Titans bust in to confront Blood, but he’s become so powerful they can’t really hurt him. But instead of killing them himself, he summons Raven and orders her to kill her friends.
