G.I. Joe #104 (September 1990) – “Hero of the People” – Larry Hama/Mark Bright/Randy Emberlin
This one starts with Snake Eyes parachuting into Borovia to rescue George Strawhacker, the man who was once engaged to his sister. Storm Shadow has put Snake Eyes into some kind of ninja trance, so he can stay focused on his mission without letting his emotions cloud his judgment. The Borovians have overthrown the communist government, but now things have devolved into factional fighting, with Upper Borovians (who
represent the working class) trying to get rid of Lower Borovians (who are more upper class, intellectual, and possibly linked to the hated security police). Snake Eyes lands in the main square where some security police holdouts are firing on a crowd of Upper Borovians. Snake Eyes heads inside the building and wastes all the security police, but disappears before the grateful Borovians can thank him. In New York, Scarlett has woken from her coma and wants to know where Snake Eyes is, but first she has to deal with her sister who apparently wanted her life support cut off so she could get their family home back in Georgia.
Scarlett says if she wants it that much, she can just have it. Hawk lets Scarlett know about Snake Eyes’s Borovian mission. In Frankfurt, Storm Shadow and Stalker are drugged with tranquilizer darts by General Crowther, one of the Jugglers that Storm Shadow blackmailed into giving Snake Eyes his assignment. But it turns out the government doesn’t want Strawhacker back, so they’ve sent someone into Borovia to kill Snake Eyes and Crowther will keep Storm Shadow and Stalker prisoner to keep them from interfering. Crowther also tells them about Scarlett’s recovery. In Borovia, a mob has gathered outside the government office, including the White Clown and Orlovsky (from issue 66), who are hoping to get inside to check the records and find out what happened to Magda. Snake Eyes storms the building and the White Clown
recognizes his acrobatics and exhorts the people to follow and help. They take the building and Snake Eyes finds Strawhacker’s file, which says he was taken to a gulag near Pvnsk, which (coincidentally) is where Magda was sent. The White Clown and Orlovsky offer to go with Snake Eyes, but they notice he’s not the same person they knew before, especially when he ignores a girl who begs him to stop the Upper Borovians from shooting her father. White Clown argues with the Upper Borovian leader (Metz) about shooting unarmed prisoners and points out that killing Lower Borovians for no reason is just racist, but Metz seems to be turning into a proto-dictator like the ones he helped overthrow. White Clown and Orlovsky give up their argument to go with Snake Eyes and the girl’s father is shot. Major Bludd shows up to tell
Metz that Snake Eyes may be dangerous since he’s already become a hero to the common people. (Bludd is obviously the assassin the Jugglers sent after Snake Eyes.) Meanwhile in Sierra Gordo, the Joes and Oktober Guard are retreating from Darklon’s forces, led by Anibal and his Tucaros. Anibal is leading them to some impenetrable jungle, but when they get there they find it’s been clear-cut and their cover has disappeared. This is a pretty good issue, showing Snake Eyes as an emotionless killing machine who’s completely focused on his mission. It’s strange that Storm Shadow would do that to him, since he’s always argued that emotion (and a conscience) is necessary to a warrior, but I guess he figured he was helping Snake Eyes get over Scarlett. I’m assuming she’ll be the one who comes to Borovia and snaps him out of his killing trance, but Major Bludd will obviously complicate things.
G.I. Joe #105 (October 1990) – “Hidden Aces” – Larry Hama/Mark Bright/Randy Emberlin
This one starts in Sierra Gordo, with the Joe/Oktober Guard team being pursued across the devastated forest by Darklon and his men. The Joes get some air support from Wild Bill and ground support from Hotseat and Stretcher, who bring the Raider in by train. Wild Bill’s chopper goes down, but Darklon retreats from the Raider’s firepower, giving them a chance to load everyone onto the vehicles. But Anibal and the Tucaros refuse to join them, saying that they have to avenge the loss of their sacred rain forest and fight the people who have invaded their homeland, even if they have no chance of winning. In Borovia, Snake eyes White Clown, and Orlovsky are heading to the gulag in
Pvnsk to find George Strawhacker and Magda, but they run into a partisan roadblock. The partisans tell them that the last security police holdouts have taken over the gulag and are threatening to kill the prisoners if they’re attacked. That doesn’t stop Snake Eyes from heading in and it seems like the White Clown approves of his emotionless devotion to his mission, although Orlovsky definitely does not. In Sierra Gordo, Darkon continues pursuing the Joes and Oktober Guard, but one of his tanks gets taken by Tucaros when it stops to repair a coolant leak. In New York, General Crowther tells Scarlett that Storm
Shadow hypnotized Snake Eyes for his Borovian mission and we see that Crowther’s men have stashed Storm Shadow and Stalker in the Statue of Liberty’s torch. In Sierra Gordo, Darklon and the Joes use their vehicles’ hidden capabilities to blast at each other, but it takes the Tucaros in the stolen Razorback to finish things. They take Darklon prisoner, which should give them the bargaining chip they need to regain (or replace) their land. In Borovia, Snake Eyes storms the gulag and starts wasting everyone, which the White Clown seems to like. Orlovsky reminds him that Magda was a gentle soul and wouldn’t have liked such passionless slaughter, but White Clown’s hatred for Magda’s captors is overwhelming his memories of who she really was. As they watch, a
helicopter with Metz and Major Bludd lands in the gulag and White Clown figurs they’re there to help Snake Eyes, but we know Bludd is really there to kill him. This is a pretty good issue, that concludes the Sierra Gordo story (for now) and ups the stakes for Snake Eyes. I hope Scarlett gets Storm Shadow and Stalker out of their predicament and they all head over to Borovia to get Snake Eyes back to normal.
