Stargirl Reviews: Season 3, Episode 11

Stargirl opening title season 3Frenemies Chapter 11: The Haunting – Director: Jennifer Phang/Writers: Steve Harper, Maytal Zchut

This one starts with a flashback to a year ago, when Mike ran into Icicle with the truck and smashed him to pieces. Hours later, we see the ice chunks (which apparently nobody thought to pick up) melting and coalescing into a puddle of water that oozes down into the tunnels under Blue Valley.

In the present, some workout dudes find Crusher’s gym closed and we see Icicle in the tunnels, apparently having trouble maintaining his humanicy reunion form. At home, Courtney and the others are reviewing what they know about Ultra-Humanite and Courtney reiterates that they’re going to need everyone to defeat him … including Cindy and the Mahkents. Mike’s nervous about that but Courtney assures him the Mahkents think she killed Icicle. Before she can explain why they think that, Artemis shows up looking for her parents. Icicle goes home, where his parents are thrilled to see him alive again. Cameron is a bit more wary, Artemis finds her parentsespecially after Jordan admits he did kill people to further his goals. Jordan claims he’s forgiven the JSA (and Mike) for everything and just wants to live in peace now. Beth tracks Crusher’s mask to the tunnels under the city and the JSA (without Rick but with Artemis) go down to check it out. They find the room with the defunct monitors and Beth identifies the remains of the Crocks, freaking Artemis out.

The news spreads quickly, affecting Pat and Barbara, who had grown close to the Crocks lately. Barbara’s distracted from her grief when Jordanbarn burner miraculously shows up at work. Barbara doesn’t trust him, but Jordan insists he’s seen the light thanks to Courtney and offers to help fight Ultra-Humanite, who he says hates the Injustice Society for refusing him membership. When Barbara mentions Crusher and Paula’s deaths, Jordan claims he acted on instinct because he thought they were attacking him, but promises he holds no animosity towards Sylvester madanyone else except Ultra-Humanite. Out at the farm, Sylvester is pissed off that Ultra-Humanite isn’t there and when Courtney calls to tell him Icicle’s back he freaks out, lighting the barn on fire. Sylvester wants to waste Icicle for killing him and the rest of the JSA, but Pat says killing Icicle isn’t the answer, suggesting they use Ultra-Humanite and Icicle’s mutual hatred to their advantage.

Cameron visits Courtney and says his father wants a second chance to be a good person. When she hesitates, he points out that she’s willing to believe in the Crocks and Cindy, so why not Jordan too? Courtney is torn, butCindy offers help obviously still has feelings for Cameron. At Jakeem’s house, he and Mike wish for the Thunderbolt to take away Jordan’s powers, but T-bolt says he can’t do that because Jordan’s powers are the only thing keeping him alive and the T-bolt isn’t allowed to kill anyone. Cindy shows up and offers to help them against Icicle and Ultra-Humanite. (And Jakeem definitely has the hots for Cindy.) Downtown, Courtney runs into Jordan, who keeps saying he wants to put the past behind him and work together. When Courtney confronts him with Barbara comforts Artemishis crimes, he asks her to forgive but not forget and uses her feelings for Cameron to try to sway her opinion. Artemis is having trouble with her parents’ deaths, so Barbara invites her to come home with her instead of being alone. Yolanda calls her mom to let her know she loves her and that her lying was to protect her family. Sylvester tells Courtney he doesn’t trust Jordan and wants to go after him, but she’s not sure if she should sanction that. Sylvester’s mistrust turns out to be correct, as we see Jordan out in the woods meeting with Ultra-Humanite.

This is a pretty good episode, with Jordan seeming to be a changed man who only wants peace, but till up to his villainous ways. I’m wondering if he’ssupervillain team-up just after revenge, or if he still wants to implement his original plan. As crazy as he is, Jordan really did seem to think he was going to help humanity (except the few million who died), but somehow I don’t think Ultra-Humanite has humanity’s best interests at heart. I’m not sure what’s going on with Jordan’s powers; he seems to be having trouble controlling them, but Thunderbolt said they’re the only thing keeping him alive. I wonder if Jordan is aware of that? I’m not vintage Atari controllerssure what’s going to happen with Sylvester, but even if Courtney can talk him out of going after Icicle, I doubt if she can do the same with Artemis. As usual, there were some humorous touches and in-jokes, like the old Atari paddle controllers on Jakeem’s desk. What does he use them for? I didn’t notice an Atari 2600 anywhere, but maybe I just missed it. Or maybe he’s adapted them for something else.

Favourite Quotes:

  • “Come out, come out wherever you are … you damn dirty ape.” Sylvester channeling Charlton Heston while searching for Ultra-Humanite.
  • “Uh, yeah, we’re gonna have to work on that name.” Cindy letting Jakeem and Mike know that she still doesn’t like Young All-Stars as a team name.
