G.I. Joe #112 (May 1991) – “Who’s the Hero?” – Larry Hama/John Statema/Randy Emberlin
This one starts where last issue left off, in the Emirate of Benzheen (which Cobra has just taken over) with Snake Eyes ready to kill the Saw Viper who’s bragging about wasting some Joes. Scarlett reminds him that their recon mission is vital to their teammates’ impending attack. Snake Eyes agrees and they move on, unaware that some Night Creeper ninjas are in the vicinity. The observation team outside the perimeter (Stalker, Sneak Peek, Cool Breeze, Recoil, and Ambush) sees the Night Creepers, but has no way to warn the Joe ninjas without breaking radio silence. Out in the desert of neighbouring Trucial Abysmia, Flint and Lady Jaye’s armoured unit has been captured by freedom fighters led by a guy named Faoud. Well, they call themselves freedom fighters, but they really want to establish a new dictatorship with Faoud in charge. Flint tries to convince him to cooperate against Cobra, but Faoud already has a plan: his insurgents are scattered around the city and will use flares to mark targets so Faoud’s men can use the Joe weapons to wipe out Cobra strong-points. Unfortunately, one of those strong-points is
where the Joe ninjas are currently operating. They notice the insurgents setting flares and realize what they’re up to, but remain unaware that there are Night Creepers around. The observation team can’t warn them without breaking silence, which would alert the Night Creepers (and Cobra) as well. Cool Breeze suggests they jam all frequencies so the Night Creepers can’t get a message out and trust thier ninjas to win the fight. That’s what happens, but Stalker knows they’ll have to show themselves and start a fight so Cobra will blame them for the jamming instead of looking for a covert team inside the perimeter. The ninjas stop the insurgents who are setting flares, but a
search chopper comes by that might expose them. Stalker’s team leaves a trail into the desert but while they’re setting their ambush, Flint’s armoured squad shows up. Stalker knows something’s wrong because Flint missed two radio checks and they’re nowhere near where they should be. In the city, the Saw Viper is in the search chopper and sees the ninjas sprawled on a roof with no weapons. He figures it’ll be an easy kill, but Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow jump onto the chopper to engage him hand-to-hand. Out in the desert, Faoud is ready to start blasting, but Stalker’s team sneak up and take him prisoner. When the search chopper comes out into the desert, Cool Breeze figures it’s up to him to lead it away since it’s his fault they’re in this mess, but the
chopper turns out to be commanded by the ninja team. They link up with the armoured unit but Faoud pulls a hidden gun and tries to shoot Stalker. Cool Breeze takes the bullet and Snake Eyes kills Faoud, but Cool Breeze dies. They get back to the temporary headquarters to join in the ceremony for their fallen comrades and Storm Shadow lets them know they killed the Saw Viper, even though that won’t bring back their dead friends. This was a pretty good issue, with some ninja action and Cool Breeze dying a hero even though he came off as an arrogant know-it-all most of the time. It was interesting that the Saw Viper was killed off-panel, instead of in some epic fight that went on for multiple pages.
G.I. Joe #113 (June 1991) – “Previous Agreement” – Larry Hama/John Statema/Randy Emberlin
This one continues the story from the above issue, with the Joes already attacking Benzheen. Stalker’s recon unit is pinned under heavy fire, but Hawk can’t send help until the main force breaks through Cobra’s defenses. And what’s worse is that the Emir keeps second-guessing Hawk’s plans, not wanting anything to happen to his precious oil reserves. Hawk has Battle Force 2000 head for Stalker’s position, while a second recon team in the sewers (Tunnel Rat, Roadblock, and Muskrat) tries to work their way up behind the Cobras. But the Cobras use a civilian child to lure Sneak Peek out of cover and shoot him. Dusty remembers promising Sneak Peek’s mom that he’d bring back his body is anything happened, so he’s ready to go after Sneak Peek’s body. Stalker tells him they can’t afford to worry about retrieving corpses, but Sneak Peek rolls over and calls for help, not quite dead yet. The Emir of Benzheen calls Cobra Commander to tell him Battle Force 2000 are moving through the oil reserves and not to fire on them, promising him $50 million, but Cobra Commander fires anyway, blowing up a bunch of oil tanks and most of Battle Force 2000. Stalker leads his team against the house where some Cobras are hiding, knowing they’ll probably be killed in the crossfire, with Ambush and Recoil getting hit right away. But Roadblock’s team hits the Cobras from behind and Dodger (the last one left from Battle Force 2000) drives what’s left of his tank through
the building. Stalker makes it through to the Cobra strong-point, as does Dusty after he stops to pick up Sneak Peek. They get back to temporary headquarters and Stalker points out that Sneak Peek has been dead for hours, but Dusty reminds him that he promised Sneak Peek’s mom he’d bring her son home. The Emir calls Cobra Commander to ask why he blew up the oil tanks and Cobra Commander says fifty million wasn’t enough … but he’s wiling to bargain. This is a pretty good issue, that gives Dusty a chance to shine by keeping his promise to Sneak Peek’s mother. Other than that, we get some more deaths, mainly of Battle Force 2000, who probably weren’t all that popular anyway.
