G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 132, G.I. Joe 133

GIJoe 132 coverG.I. Joe #132 (January 1993) – “Bump in the Night” – Larry Hama/Rurik Tyler/Stephen Baskerville

This one starts with four Joes (Duke, Lady Jaye, Snake Eyes, and Roadblock) in a plane high above Cobra Island getting ready to make a HALO ump. They’re there to get some payback for Cobra Commander’s attack on the Pit last issue, but they don’t know that attack was just a way for Cobra Commander to advertise his new stealth technology. They also don’t know that Cobra Commander has abandoned Cobra Island to Firefly. The HALO jump goes off well, except Roadblock gets separated from the others by a freak wind gust. A patrol comes by and Duke decides to take them out quietly, but they turn out to be BATs instead of humans, so thattaking out BATs gets a bit harder. They finally take the BATs down without any major noise, but one of the androids sends an alarm signal, so more BATs show up. Luckily, Roadblock arrives just in time to blow them away, but that pretty much ends the “quiet” part of the mission. So now Firefly is waiting for them with his BAT army and the two zombified ninjas, Slice and Dice. This is a pretty good issue with some great fight scenes, but talk about decompressed! The HALO jump takes up the first half of the issue (though I do appreciate the details of how HALO jumps actually work), and the second half is the fight with the BATs. Maybe we’ll get some more detail in the next issue.

GIJoe 133 coverG.I. Joe #133 (February 1993) – “Recon By Fire” – Larry Hama/Andrew Wildman/Stephen Baskerville

This one continues from the above issue, with the Joe strike team heading for the citadel where Firefly is waiting for them. The Joes quickly figure out that Firefly and Cobra had some kind of showdown on the island, but they figure they’d better investigate to see who won, since whoever it is won’t want them leaving with info on what happened. Firefly is lying in ambush in the citadel, but Slice and Dice are getting a bit rebellious. Firefly had to go easier on their brainwashing so they wouldn’t lose their ninjaSnake Eyes attacks skills, but that means their minds are constantly straining to break the programming. When Snake Eyes sneaks inside the citadel, Slice and Dice are ready to go after him against Firefly’s orders. The ensuing argument distracts them enough for Snake Eyes to find them and attack, which signals the other Joes outside to come in hard. Firefly sends Slice and Dice with some BATs to confront the Joes, while he (and a horde of red ninjas) go after Snake Eyes. The Joes outside hide under the swamp water to throw off the ninjas’ thermal scanners, making them think the Joes retreated into the swamp. When Slice and Dice lead their squad into the swamp to look for Joes on the defensivethem, the Joes pop out of the water and prepare to head into the citadel. Meanwhile, Snake Eyes has to waste a bunch of BATs which gives Firefly the chance to mount a special ninja attack … but we’ll have to wait until next issue to see what happens with that. This is another pretty good issue, although it’s almost as decompressed as the last one, with the story being stretched out to cover 21 pages. Wildman’s art is (as usual) very 1990s. ’Nuff said?
