G.I. Joe Reviews: G.I. Joe 150, G.I. Joe 151

GIJoe 150 coverG.I. Joe #150 (July 1994) – “Slam Dance in the Cyber Castle” – Larry Hama/Phil Gosier/Chip Wallace

This one starts with Storm Shadow infiltrating the castle in Trans-Carpathia to rescue Billy and Baroness. But Cobra is expecting him and they lure him into Dr. Mindbender’s cyber-matrix chamber where Cobra Commander is waiting (wearing his new battle armour) to confront him. The chamber is filled with illusions and special effects designed to confuse Storm Shadow’s heightened senses and cut down his tactical advantage. ItSnake Eyes tools up seems more like something Mysterio would use against Spider-Man, but it works and Storm Shadow is captured. Back in the High Sierras, Snake Eyes can feel Storm Shadow’s distress and decides to go help him. Scarlett gives him her blessing, but I’m not sure why she didn’t offer to go along; she’s not exactly a slouch in the infiltration and fighting department. At the castle, Cobra Commander demonstrates the cyber-matrix for Slice and Dice and continues brainwashing Billy, Baroness, and Storm Shadow, trying to overwrite their personalities so they’ll go evil and join Cobra again. Three days later, Snake Eyes arrives in Trans-Carpathia and loads up on weapons from General Liederkranz’s private arsenal before assaulting the castle solo (and without his mask). He crashes through the main entrance and starts wasting cobras, so Mindbender and Cobra Commander retreat to the cyber-matrix to wait for him. Snake Eyes uses a smoke grenade to disrupt the holograms and a flechette round to open up Cobra Commander’s body armour so he can blast him with some white phosphorus.Cobra Commander down Unfortunately, Mindbender’s new brainwashing technique worked, so now Snake Eyes has to face evil versions of Storm Shadow, Billy, and Baroness. This is a pretty good issue, although it’s basically a solo story about how bad-ass Snake Eyes is. The cyber-matrix stuff is a bit too sci-fi for me, but I’m curious to see how Sake Eyes will defeat his friends without hurting them.

GIJoe 151 coverG.I. Joe #151 (August 1994) – “Cobra Renewed” – Larry Hama/Phil Gosier/Scott Koblish

This one continues from last issue with Snake Eyes fighting defensively against his friends before grabbing Cobra Commander to use him as a shield. Snake Eyes tries to retreat, still using the Commander as a shield, but Baroness realizes Cobra Commander’s armour is bulletproof, so they can open fire and hope for a lucky round to hit Snake Eyes. More Joes are waiting outside to cover Snake Eyes’s retreat, but Storm Shadow attacks without hesitation. Flint solves the problem by tossing Cobra Commanderpresident blown up off a cliff, forcing Storm Shadow to swing down and save him. Meanwhile in Borovia, Wolfgang (General Liederkranz’s crooked aide) plants explosives in the bathroom of the government palace. He’s seen coming out but claims to be there to deliver a gold watch to the new Borovian president (Metz) from General Liederkranz. After delivering the watch, Wolfgang leaves and the bomb blows Metz to hell. Turns out Wolfgang was actually Zartan in disguise, acting on Cobra Commander’s orders. The Joes manage to get away from the Cobras by calling in a pinpoint laser strike by Joe and Jane in New York, bounced off a satellite in orbit. The laser blast takes out the bridge behind the Joes, Wolfgang for presidentkeeping Cobra from following them into Wolkekuckuckland. In Borovia, the real Wolfgang is blamed for Metz’s death, but the people didn’t like Metz much so they hail Wolfgang as a hero and make him the new president. In New York, Roadblock and Tunnel Rat deliver orders to Joe that reactivate him as a member of the team. This was a decent issue, with a regime change in Borovia and the return of the original G.I. Joe. But the Snake Eyes vs Cobra Commander storyline ended too quickly and Storm Shadow and the rest are still brainwashed, so I hope they resolve that before the series ends in a few issues.
