Librarians Reviews: Season 3, Episode 1

Librarians opening title 3-1The Librarians and the Rise of Chaos – Director: Dean Devlin/Writers: Marco Schnabel, Dean Devlin

This one starts at a museum in Egypt where some tourists are enjoying a look at the relics. But one guy (Barry) is bored out of his mind, so when a voice tells him to go into a restricted chamber, he obeys and finds a cool sarcophagus with a mummy in it. As he’s taking a selfie with it, some dark energy flies out of the mummy’s mouth and into Barry.

Elsewhere, the Librarians are retrieving a Celtic artifact while some druids try to kill them. Thanks to some solid teamwork, they get the artifact andbad night at the museum escape just before everything falls apart … literally. Later, Eve and Jacob train in fighting and she tries to teach him to use a bit of finesse instead of just brute force. At the Science Museum of Boston the nightwatchman is making his rounds when the exhibits start coming to life and chasing him, chanting the name “Stendek”. At the clippings book on fireAnnex, Eve tells Flynn she has a weird feeling that something bad is going to happen, which is why she’s been pushing the others to hone their skills faster. Her worries seem justified when the Clippings Book literally explodes, sending charred pieces of page flying all over the place. Flynn tries to play it cool but he’s freaked out about what could be so dangerous it would make the Book explode like that.

They piece some of the shreds back together and Cassandra suggests using magic to speed things up, but Jenkins reminds her that magic almost alwaysCassie pieces things together corrupts its practitioners. Thanks to Cassandra’s math skills, they do figure out that the Science Museum in Boston is where they need to go. Meanwhile, the museum guard is being interrogated by shadowy government agents about his experience with the animated mannequins, but can’t tell them anything. At the museum, Cassandra is excited to see the Antikythera Mechanism, but Jacob and Ezekiel are more interested in the submarine docked outside. talking to the guardThanks to the magic of the Library, they find out the guard is in the hospital, so Eve and Flynn go to see him while the others look around the museum for clues. Eve and Flynn find out the guard was already questioned by the government, which worries Eve. But soon she has more to worry about as the guard’s mention of Stendek animates all the comatose patients in the ward, who start chanting the name.

Jenkins tells them it’s probably an animistic deity that’s possessing inanimate objects (which including comatose people) and that the chantpub chaos may be some kind of warning. Jacob figures it could refer to a ancient Egyptian word that has something to do with time. Cassandra gleefully reminds them that the Antikythera Mechanism (an ancient timepiece) is at the museum. At a local pub, Barry finds a brochure for the Egyptian exhibit at the museum and releases a wave of energy that makes everyone in the pub start fighting each other. The antikythera deviceresulting mayhem seems to strengthen Barry (or whatever has taken him over). The government agents show up (who are from DOSA, the Department of Statistical Anomalies) and quickly figure out where Barry is headed next. At the museum, the Antikythera Mechanism starts running (which it hasn’t done in centuries) and the Librarians figure out it’s pointing them to something underneath the building.

Under the museum, the team finds some old smuggling tunnels and unearth a stone box with the symbol of Apep, Egyptian God of Chaos.Apep's key box Jenkins tells them that the box contains the key to releasing Pure Evil into the world from the nether region where it was banished. He also lets them know that a tourist (Barry) disappeared in Egypt at what’s probably Apep’s tomb, suggesting he was taken over by Apep. Ezekiel has trouble opening the combination lock, so stolen subCassandra suggests they use the sonar equipment from the submarine to help, which Ezekiel and Jacob are thrilled about. Barry (or Apep) causes a bit of dissension among the trio in the tunnels, but they quickly get past it and realize the combination to the box is written right on it. Unfortunately the box is empty and they soon realize Apep not only has the key but has commandeered the sub.

Jacob looks for Apep but can’t find him and quickly realizes a torpedo is going to launch. The sub turns around to aim at the museum and Eve tells Ezekiel to speed it up so it’s inside the torpedo’s arming range. The torpedohole outside the museum doesn’t detonate, but the sub rams the foundation which shakes up the museum enough to open a huge hole outside, into which Apep descends. The team follows and finds him about to open the portal to release Pure Evil upon the world. Apep hits them with another chaos wave that makes them argue, but they overcome it by concentrating on their friendship and love for each other … bolstered by a rousing rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. They knock Apep (or Barry) out and get the key before the portal opens, but DOSA shows up to closing the portaltake it and arrest them. Flynn tricks them into reviving Barry, who hits them with a wave of chaos. While the DOSA agents are beating the shit out of each other, the Librarians sneak away with the key. Apep leaves Barry’s body which puts the DOSA agents back to normal. They take Barry into custody and interrogate him. At the Annex, Flynn and Jenkins realize Apep’s return could herald the ultimate battle between Good and Evil that Judson warned Flynn about.

This is a pretty good episode to kick off the new season. It looks like Apep (or what he represents, chaos made manifest) will be the overarching villainAgent Prichard this season. It was cool to see Eve’s radar working to make her uneasy even before anything happened and I liked how the team used their personal connections to overcome Apep’s discordant vibes. DOSA looks like they’ll be a problem, getting in the way and screwing things up for the team. Hopefully their interference won’t lead to the downfall of humanity.
